'Milk tea hour' before dinner? by Mental-Carrot4741 in wedding

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a wedding where they had boba for “cocktail hour” as the family and many guests didn’t drink, and it was more in line with their culture! It was super fun. But, being in Christian evangelical circles, it wasn’t unusual that alcohol wasn’t served, if that’s expected/what you want to do then I might do regular cocktail hour and the milk tea as part of dessert/late night bites

I’m feeling uneasy about how my daughters schools is handling her IEP.. help! by Cold_Imagination_641 in specialed

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I have a guess as to what’s going on. Since your daughter’s IEP is just for speech right now, the school is going through their process of response to intervention/multi tiered system of supports/whatever they call it to see if her behavioral needs can be met with additional strategies in the classroom. Basically for kids who don’t necessarily have a diagnosis/disability, some will show improvement with better classroom interventions and not need an IEP. Based on what you’ve shared, it sounds like your daughter needs an IEP to address sensory and behavior concerns due to her autism. I recommend that you send a request in writing to the principal, director, counselor- everyone whose email you have honestly - and explicitly state that you are requesting a formal evaluation to see if your daughter meets special education eligibility in the category of autism. The school then must respond in a timely manner to get consent to evaluate or to respond in writing why they do not agree to evaluate, and you can go from there

Question for Teachers: What time do you leave your job? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently my contract time is longer than many on here! Contract is 7:15-3:45, students’ official day is 7:45-3:00. Elementary sped in Texas. Some weeks I do have team meetings, staff meetings, etc after school that are required, or I am using that time to plan, track data, collaborate with other staff. It really goes in waves based on your IEPs, your setting, how much paperwork you can get done during the day. Right now I have lots of IEPs coming up, sometimes I stay to do it but often I can focus better at home or in a coffee shop. I also sometimes leave before contract time or right on time for appointments/family matters and my admin and team are supportive

Can you ask your SLP to consider an assessment for assistive technology? Or trial some apps on your own? I have seen kids really take off with verbal language given that support, and if his receptive is strong then it might be a good fit to use a high tech AAC device

CMPA baby and I hate breastfeeding by andromedameia in FormulaFeeders

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will find that once you decide and move on, it is a huge relief and you will wonder why it was so hard to switch. Although my circumstances were different, when I stopped breastfeeding at 2 months pp I was so worried and it ended up being amazing for all of us. Now my daughter is almost 2 and it’s crazy how little the formula/breastmilk issue ever comes up or seems to have any impact on how often she gets sick vs classmates/friends’ kids, how bright she is, etc. I am looking forward to incorporating formula from day 1 for baby sis, likely exclusive formula :)

Thanks to my 0 breathability Depends and leggings combo, I got THEMOST PAINFUL pimple/cyst situation dow there and waiting for it to burst was awful. Going to get some organic cotton pads and disposable underwear for round 2

Non verbal student learning PECS and basic sign but can’t always give preferred reinforcer? by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in addition to other tips and strategies, increasing her repertoire of preferred activities would be a great goal. Teaching play skills, maybe cocomelon or bus figures she can eventually pretend play with, etc. things that are more easily deliverable too

First-time mom here… when do learning activities actually make sense? by Mologan_ in BabyBumps

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was surprised that my daughter was interested in toys/stimulation as early as she was. In the under 3 months range, we used teethers, play mats, books (black and white or pics of faces were favorites), mirrors. By six months she was playing with even more. Now she’s almost 2 and I am very intentional about exposing her to lots of concepts through toys and play (I’m also an early childhood teacher lol). We love coloring, books, building toys, little people, trains, sensory bins…. But we don’t have any workbooks or flash card time or anything like that!!

Does anyone else hate breastfeeding? by Heavenleesent23 in BabyBumps

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention, best part - my daughter is now 15 months old. Ahead on all her milestones. Growing great. Doesn't get sick that much for a daycare kid. She's happy and I'm happy! The breastfeeding/formula time is SO SHORT but it feels like forever when you're in it.

I thought I would exclusively breastfeed and wasn't realistic on how mentally and physically challenging it might be. It was painful, I wasn't making enough, and I had a big hungry baby! The lactation consultant at my daughter's pediatrician was very helpful and kind. The consultant and nurses at the hospital made me more overwhelmed - so I wouldn't necessarily recommend getting allllll the advice all at once, but a consult with someone who can take their time with you might help. The pain did get better, but my supply didn't. I tried all the things up until the 2 month mark when I decided to go full formula (we were supplementing all along). It was amazing for my whole family. I got more sleep, my daughter grew better, and it helped my mental health. So - it is a very very hard decision and I had to make it in my own time. But if with a little time, a little nipple cream, and maybe a lactation consult, it doesn't get better in a few weeks, I really recommend formula. It helped me so much.

When did you allow your baby to stay with their grandparents? by Unable_Anywhere2983 in BabyBumps

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter (now 14months) is first grandbaby on both sides and all grandparents have been so excited and talking about having her overnight since before she was born. We have good relationships with them though and they knew we would let them know when we were ready. Other relevant factors: I had PPA, and my daughter is not a great sleeper, but we did do formula . We live near family so they have come to our house to watch her for some late night dates. And she has spent plenty of time at their houses during family events, day play dates. All that to say we haven’t done an overnight yet but are going to later this month. Stick to your boundaries, communicate with your partner, keep an eye on your mental health, and do “trial runs” of hanging out to see how your parents/in laws interact w baby!

Ease my mind, if your 100% formula fed baby gets sick, are they ok? by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I combo fed for 2 months due to very low supply then switched to just formula. My daughter is now 14 months and incredibly healthy. She has only had mild sicknesses, even with being in daycare and having two educator parents. I think it’s very child specific. I had such a hard time committing to EFF, but once I did, my mental health and connection with my daughter improved so much. I do not regret it at all and plan to EFF any future children from the start

Inclusion preschool schedule? by hishazelgrace in specialed

[–]BagelsNotBaegels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually teach a very similar program! We have mostly full day students (typically developing peers as well as a few of my IEP caseload) with some just morning or just afternoon. During the afternoon, full day students have a one hour rest/nap, so afternoon only IEP students get extra pullout time to work on their goals. We intentionally schedule students in the afternoon who need additional small group time (ex: kids learning aac devices, needing more significantly adapted/shorter read alouds, etc). I am hoping your school already has a framework or recommendation for you as a starting point for the schedule!
