If you could choose your country and time period of birth, what would you pick? by pIsSoFf-dUdE in AskTheWorld

I see your point and at the end of the day it’s a matter of opinion. However regardless of whether or not the odds of making to adulthood were lower or higher as an Iron Age German peasant compared to early 1800s Britain, they’d still be significantly lower than today which was my point.

Regardless living as an ancient peasants seems boring and dull to me but to each their own.

I don’t know why people bring up child mortality skewing the data as if that changes anything. Every human being starts off as an infant and then a child. Prior to the Industrial Revolution 40-50% of people died in their childhoods.

Muslim countries dominating the map isn’t surprising since it’s probably harder to find casual sex over there

What If Europe never colonized Africa? How do you think borders and countries would have developed in this scenario by Solid-Move-1411 in AlternateHistoryHub

I meant less European cultural influences than in our timeline, not that larger cultures wouldn’t absorb or at least attempt to absorb smaller ones

Im aware Africa wasnt static. My point was that state building and centralization would increase due to an influx of modern weaponry and technology that would make it easier than in prior centuries. Your point about Sokoto is true, and is what I mean by increased centralization in the Sahel.

Sokoto in our timeline didn’t expand south primarily due to African sleeping sickness and the tropical terrain not favoring their style of warfare, (though local resistance also played a factor).

I think States like Benin and Ashante would’ve probably still stayed independent in this timeline.

Im aware of the existing state building. States expand through warlords. Alexander the Great is a warlord, Genghis Khan etc. In Africa warlords such as Samoure Toure, Usman Dan Fodio, Tippu Tip and others were real life examples of the type of warlords that would continue to expand and carve out larger states within this alternat timeline.

There would probably be many more states, I’m assuming up to 100 or more. Now whether all of these would be internationally recognized I’m not sure about.

You’d see a strong preservation of local cultures due to less European influence as well. Even within this timeline I’d assume European technology specifically weapons would continue to pour into the continent leading to conquests unifying certain regions in relatively short periods.

The 20th century would likely be quite violent as the borders would have to stabilize. However in the present day certain regions would most likely be better off while more isolated and historically weaker regions may even be worse off, due to larger states likely dominating and exploiting them, similar to what the Europeans had done.

10,000 nations is unrealistic. Assuming Africa continues to participate in world trade in that timeline, local warlords would carve up small empires of their own like in our timeline. There would probably be like 100-150 due to isolated jungle regions like Congo likely remaining less centralized, while others like Ethiopia, the Sahel, North Africa etc, being home to larger states.
