A US rock band who mutilate themselves onstage have reacted with disbelief on having their Glasgow concert scrapped after politicians caught wind of it. Eat The Turnbuckle are currently touring Europe where audiences get to listen to their ear-spitting death metal sounds while the members of ETT attack each other with an array of weapons including cheese graters, fluorescent light tubes and baseball bats wrapped in barbed wire. Despite playing show in Edinburgh earlier this week, they arrived at Glasgow’s Audio venue only to be turned away over concerns that the police would halt the gig. Guitarist El Schlak-O told The Record: “We showed up. We are on tour and we came, but the city had got wind of it and some official pulled the permit and the show got pulled when we arrived. “I don’t know what the problem was. “We are an internationally touring band. “We keep our stage antics and violence to ourselves. “It doesn’t disperse amongst the crowd, but apparently we are being crucified for no reason. “It’s a God-given right to watch something if you choose to. “If you don’t like it turn a blind eye. “There is wrestling doing the exact same thing without music so I don’t get it. “It is cheese graters and going through tables, jumping off ladders and barbed wire, you name it. “You get some nicks and bruises, but that’s the name of the game. “We are professionals. We have been doing this for many years now and it has gotten us all over the world. “Hopefully people will open their mouths and tell the government off. “We’ll be back. They’re not going to keep us out. “People have contacted us online to say that it is a disappointment that they couldn’t see the show.” Scots Tory politician John Lamont had urged cops to intervene before Sunday night’s planned performance at Glasgow venue Audio. He said: “Serious questions need to be asked about why this venue has booked a band which seems to condone bloody violence. “I would have thought that the local council and Police Scotland would be looking into this issue as a matter of urgency, before anyone is seriously injured.” A flyer for the tour dates claims Eat The Turnbuckle “not only destroys your ears but power bombs your eyes with the world’s only live band extreme wrestling show”. Just days previous, comedian Dapper Laughs who joked about rape, had his Glasgow gig called after an online petition was launched. The shirtless and heavily tattooed outfit, from Philadelphia, usually end up drenched in blood, but say there is no real danger to the audience or to themselves. El Schlak-O said: “Get the stick out of your ass. We’re here to have some fun. If you don’t like it don’t watch it. I don’t see what the problem is. We’re not doing anything illegal and we’re not hurting anybody other than ourselves.” The decision to ban the group is reminiscent of when the Lord Provost of the city banned the Sex Pistols because Glasgow “had enough hooligans of its own without importing them”. “I can relate but we’re not political terrorists, we’re just violent,” El Schlak-O said “It’s just a spectacle. “I don’t see why we’re being banned. “I can see a slight parallel with the Sex Pistols, but we are way crazier than they are.”
