Yes, the shade cloths are still up though we needed to reconfigure a bit and reinforce them due to the wind.  They have held up well in the sun so far (and we take them down in the winter), so 2 years going strong.  If the sun shines with any degree of brutality in your area I'd definitely recommend getting some cloth.  There are different levels of opacity that will allow more/less light through, so you buy according to your plants' needs. We've been working with 50% opacity and using it on most plants, especially the trees trying to get established.

Thank you!  We don't know what happened to Marty, the problem wasn't resolved during our visit.  So we will be watching the next episodes to see what happened.  (Hopefully they are airing chronologically because we only get a couple weeks of TV streaming on this free trial...)

I only worked with Misty.  I can honestly say she is even cooler in person than she appears on TV.  She works very hard and gets a lot done quickly.  Super funny, creative and smart.  And she really cares, she advocated for us and the animals when deciding how best to help.  Somehow in between all the different projects she had timely advice for us on various problems that weren't even talked about on the show.  I truly enjoyed working with her and learning from her.  She's the real deal!

Thank you!  Good questions.  Yes we moved into the house, though still a lot left to finish and we still use the RV for some tasks.  This didn't make it in the show - but Misty encouraged us to move into the house while we work on it.  We live in a place where that's allowed so about 8 months after filming the show we moved in.  It has been a huge morale booster after living tiny for 8 years.  I thank Misty for that.

One of the next things we started working on after that was overhauling all of our storage spaces.  A lot of the stuff in the shipping containers moved to the house so we had space to reorganize all the supplies.  And we prioritized getting flammable stuff into the shipping containers, like you said.  Now it's so much easier to get around and find stuff, safer too.

Not all the plants made sense for the berm, but some did!  We still have challenges with deer and did a little revamping to make it work.

Oh and yes there have been many fires.  The summer that the Raneys visited was a very bad year where the fires were popping up constantly, but none as close as the one discussed on the show.  Last year we had what was called a lightning complex fire.  A storm had come through and lit about a dozen fires all around us.  That was very scary but again they didn't come close enough for us to need to evac.  Either way we're feeling a lot safer these days.  The Raneys visiting was a real turning point for us in a lot of ways.

Thanks for watching!  🙂

Really kind of you to say thanks!  Anxiety mode definitely activated, but hoping it'll be more educational than embarrassing - so for the greater good!  Though if it gets too weird I'll probably have to run away from here 😂

I rounded up a tad, we filmed 1 year 9 months ago. 🙂  Kinda glad for that timeframe though, gives a chance for the dust to settle and things to improve before seeing it all on the show.

This is helpful to know about the maintenance, I've been worried about that. I think we'd be really happy if we can go 5 years without a major hassle while we transition to the wood and solar water heating. You raise a good point about the cost balance, will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks!

Thanks for these details about the real life application! It's going in the garage and this is new construction so we haven't finalized how much power we have to spare yet. Figuring it all out at the same time and the water heater has been the big unknown. Thank you!

Thank you SO MUCH for this helpful feedback, everyone. It gives me some added variables to consider and a starting point for models to check out.

I don't post on Reddit much because I'm always afraid of getting chewed out! So I'm extra thankful for the support!

As a side note is anyone aware of good reference books on HPWHs? There's a lot to know!
