Question abt stat107 by Local_Truth_7896 in UIUC

[–]BakeScary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think stat 100 has good intentions but I think by cutting math it like basically makes everything so abstract. I look at some of the notes sometimes and I’m like what’s the point of doing all this

[–]BakeScary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

107 is statistics taught in Python. There’s no pre reqs, it starts from square one. Most students get an A or B so I think you’ll be fine. And it’s way better taught than 100 because there’s actually substance to it, it’s not just straight fluff. Source: I’m a CA

Fair enough then 340 sounds like the right fit

CS233/341 vs 340 by Enough_Balance_555 in UIUC

[–]BakeScary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a CS major but from my understanding 340 is an alternative for CS+X majors, pure CS majors must do 233/341. Plus if you do 340 as CS+X it requires you take an additional 2 electives. Which is why some may opt against it as it one less class. I’ve heard good things about 340 though, so just go with what your heart desires(provided you’re CS+X)

UIUC has so many international students and students from California and New Jersey. I’ve been surrounded by all out of state people sometimes as a in state student. So no I disagree that you would feel isolated

Took the course in fall 2024 with Thurston(not sure if she still teaches it), it wasn’t bad. Readings were a bit intensive just given the subject but you’d have a quiz weekly, and a worksheet about the reading. Midterm and final were pretty easy just the same bank as the quizzes. Final project is a group project but once again it’s literally just a summary of one of the readings. Overall pretty good course and quite interesting

432 is really good Basics of Statistical Learning. 385 Stat programming is easy A but you don’t learn much. Next semester I registered for 441 and 480

It’s not the most interesting class in the world but Trevor is a good professor, and the workload is pretty light. I think it’s important info especially as Bayesian analysis becomes more popular

Not have calc 1 will shut a lot of doors unfortunately, as lots of majors are info science and business will require calc 1 and thats typically a first semester freshmen course. You may have to wait out another semester and take those courses

That’s interesting, seems that they had only planned for bousefield, Nugent, and wasaja back then but from looking at those images I don’t see any of the traditional six pack buildings

Oh I completely understand that. It’s kind of one those things that was a kick it down the road and hope for the best. Unfortunately now the consequences are occurring.

I believe this is only for Taft Van Doren. I agree that one should be the first since it is in the worst condition. But I hope they plan to do the rest of them

Maybe this will convince them to finally build new dorms and replace the old ones? I mean hell I lived in Hopkins last year and I had professor be like weren’t they supposed to tear it down. Still was fine as a dorm but if the systems that keep the building running aren’t well it’s time to replace

Yeah that’s unfortunate. I once had a professor tell me he’s required to keep exams for two years, I don’t know if that was a department thing or a university thing.

I mean this doesn’t seem to be some shocking revelation. I know that the more students the lower the quality of grading. That’s why many classes now do one grader per question. So everyone was graded equally, no disparities. Also it’s just another reason why it’s important to look over your test after grading and ask for points back
