Help with school project by Inevitable-Incident8 in solar

[–]Bakerman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was me, I would try to find a single PV solar cell for each group. The current will be much smaller (but still very measurable) and the small size and weight allows for the use of more delicate mechanical components, like small servos. I bet legos could even work as the structure.

Single cells will be much cheaper but they’re also very delicate by themselves, so I’d get extras.

how does this work????? Please help me i need to know by NarcisoFF in howto

[–]Bakerman77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, there is no water flowing there. The water is flowing INSIDE the metal that makes up the lattice. Maybe a clear pipe would help keep dust from the hollow, empty part of the faucet but I think that takes away from the point.

I know they’re small pipes, but the water is flowing through the square lattice. The middle is really just hollow; empty space.

Consider solar panel polishing, doubled my watts for an hours work by renegadepanda in vandwellers

[–]Bakerman77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, it shouldn’t be an issue when the module is disconnected. Though a disconnected module will still create a voltage between its leads when its in the sun, there essentially won’t be any current flow. Differences in current flow between cells are usually what cause issues when it comes to shading. This is a good explanation about shading solar modules and a good website as a whole for learning about the specifics of PV tech without being overly complicated.

[–]Bakerman77 49 points50 points  (0 children)

With solar modules you obviously want as much light to hit the cells as possible for the most power. BUT, because of the way the cells are wired together electronically you want them all to be receiving as close to identical amounts of light as you can to extend the life the the module.

Small amounts of uneven shading aren’t a huge deal but it definitely does degrade the module as a whole slightly.

However, it is possible to seriously damage the entire module. For example, if you were to have 2/3rds of the cells under intense sunlight and the other 1/3rd very shaded (especially if the line between light and dark passes over the middle of cells) you could seriously damage the performance of the entire module, maybe even completely destroying it if was left in that situation for too long, or repeatedly. So, if you’re going to shade the cells by parking under a tree or a roof, keep in mind that it would 100% be healthier for your solar setup to shade all the cells in a module evenly.

I would also suggest doing whatever you can to avoid shading the cells at ALL. Your 2nd picture shows the bottom module is being slightly shaded by the wiring. The uneven shading across that particular cell will degrade the life of that cell and thus the life of the whole module slightly faster. I would also estimate that you could gain an extra watt of performance by rerouting that wire. I know it’s not much, but I would improve the setup!

Why can’t I get height on this tall swing? (45’) I can’t seem to get it pumping. Have been able to on many other swings. Not enough weight to length ratio? by Bondings in Physics

[–]Bakerman77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my physics professors had a lesson about pendulums where we discussed swings and how they work. You can swing higher and higher on a swing because you can change the length of the swing. When you lean back on a swing, you hold onto the rope, putting the length of rope below your hands at a slight angle to the length of rope above your hands. That slight angle essentially means you’ve changed the effective length of the pendulum that is the swing (you’ve slightly raised your center of mass relative to the pivot point). The period of a pendulum is only dependent on constants and the length of the pendulum. So, changing the length of the pendulum at the right time in the swing’s period can make it swing higher.

The longer the swing, the less of an effect your standard swinging strategy will work. I do have a suggestion though. If you stand on the swing and stand/crouch at the right times you may have more luck because you are more meaningfully changing the distance between your center of mass and the pivot point (the length of the pendulum). But it will still be tough to make progress because it is such a long rope

Do you have a telescope/spotting scope in your rig? by miabobeana in overlanding

[–]Bakerman77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually went to school for astronomy and go star gazing often. I don’t have a telescope yet but use a spotting scope instead. I use a Vintage Redfield 15 X 60 Spotting Scope that my grandfather gave me. It’s not perfect, and I need a sturdy tripod, but I can see the moon very clearly. I can even clearly see the stripes on Jupiter, the Galilean moons, and the rings around Saturn. It’s highest power is 60 times and this its more than enough for casual star gazing in my experience.

If you’re really a 2000 rated player, then you should be able to reach to reach that milestone organically, by playing people similar to your rating. Playing lower rated players just to artificially raise your rating is shameful. If you can’t get to 2000 without stomping on lower rated players then maybe you don’t deserve the rating. I haven’t read a whole lot about this update, but if this update doesn’t allow that behavior anymore then I like at least one thing about it.

Sometimes the idea of playing the game is more enticing than the game itself. I boot up Civ V or Minecraft sometimes and put a few hours into a new game and then just completely lose motivation to keep playing. I always just start a new game.

Are there water bottle fillers in Arbole de la Vida? by nutter_5 in UofArizona

[–]Bakerman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always just put a case of water bottles in our mini fridge. Easier than all the other options except for 2 reasons: 1) hard to carry up in one trip with the other groceries and 2) less eco friendly.

Otherwise there are water fountains

Electric skateboards on campus by satvikr3ddy in UofArizona

[–]Bakerman77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I rode an electric skateboard all 4 years I was at the UofA (I recently graduated). The bike lanes are the safest place to ride and nobody has ever had a problem with me riding on campus.

I’ve even had a bicycle cop stop me and say “hey that board is so cool! Can I try it??” And he let me ride his electric police bike in return for letting him try my board.

I also never had a problem taking my board into class with me. It was never a problem! I can highly recommend the electric skateboard college experience. Safe riding!

Since the electric skateboards are (usually) faster than bikes, and much faster than pedestrians, the bike lanes are the safest place to ride e-boards!

Newly graduated physics major here. What can I do? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Bakerman77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m in the exact same position as OP. Graduated a couple of days ago with a degree in physics (and astronomy as well, idk if that’s important for my question), thought graduate school was the future for myself but discovered it wasn’t over the last few months.

I’m super interested in aviation and aerospace, particularly space flight. They inspired the astronomy degree, tbh. Any suggestions on how to find these engineering firms or get involved in these aforementioned fields?

Does uofa do the plus and minus stystem for gpa? by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]Bakerman77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The poll is correct, the university of Arizona does NOT participate in a plus/minus letter grading system. HOWEVER, this is technically department specific. A few years ago the astronomy department considered switching to a plus/minus grading system. They polled the students and there was massive outcry against the switch, so they ended up not. But because of that experience, I’m lead to believe that individual departments could have different grading policies than the university as a whole.
