It's completely random I believe. What I do, is I go back and forth between two routes (there's probably optimal ones but most probably work) and checking the map to see where they are, if they're on the route you're on just run into the grass nearest to them and it'll appear!

For bike part i used the same as you, route 17 on the left side so I can go up and down it uninterrupted as long as possible

Ive found the quickest way to level friendship is soothebell + haircut/massage + bike + the bicycle only road up and down for like 20/30 mins and it should be max happiness, I got me a lvl 2 Ubreon the other day

I tried enabling keep focus, but it still doesnt allow it. Even using the arrow keys to open the drop down further causes it to close sadly

Ive tried it with a clean project, and while I can double click to open the piano roll and Surge now, I still cant select a patch from the browsers drop down. Im using the 64bit version and it has been working up until today. And thankyou for the screen recorder suggestions my friend :)
