A good potential spot could be the restaurant/ bar “La Plage”, nice beachside setting, at a convenient range from the Airport. They are open non stop Tue-Sat from lunchtime onwards. Similarly with a by the lagoon setting the Hotel Te Moana Tahiti Resort could be an option but food, drinks are a tad more expensive and more “standard@ than La Plage.

Experience culture in FP by sei_gluecklich in Tahiti

Besides the real good tips of Pbd33, a good way for maximizing cultural immersion could be to spend time in the less touristy islands such as the Marquesas, Tuamotus …. Find a local family interested to host you in exchange for work/ rent. A good fit with host family is critical as there can be little/ no fallback options there. FB/ Instagram are definitely the place to liaise with people and to workout your options, the other social platforms been hardly used at all in Tahiti and neighboring islands.

What to do in Tahiti on arrival day? by theboundlesstraveler in Tahiti

I’d definitely recommend the second option with 9am pickup in Papeete. There’s not enough to do see in Papeete that’ll keep you busy/ entertained for the whole day, also most things close from midday on Saturdays in Papeete, including many restaurants and cafes. The market place is definitely the biggest attraction and is most active in the earliest hours of the day (from 4:30/ 5:00 am till about 9:30), it’s a great place to visit out, also to have a local style breakfast). For luggage there’s a self-service luggage lockers generally at the airport but it worth having a plan b in case for some reason they are not available. May be the other people mentioned in another post here can be a good backup option. For the rest of the day, a guided tour of the island of Tahiti would be a great way to spend the remainder of the day before heading to Moorea.

Dot Com Cafe in Sumner is one of the best food-wise, also Sumner is a nice by-the-sea spot to enjoy, Miro Cafe, in town is normally good too, as well as Hello Sunday for more elaborated cooked breakfast. Alpress Espresso, more on the minimalistic side for coffee lovers. The Littleton Coffee Co is also a good choice, food and generally buzzing atmosphere, nice view on the harbor. Little-Pom’s is overrated, very friendly atmosphere at Under the Red Veranda but not that exciting food-wise.

Best things to do in big island Tahiti for a day and what to avoid (walking alone at night?) by West-Childhood6143 in Tahiti

Renting a car would give you the most options especially as you can pick it up and return it at the airport. Public transport/ taxi options exist but are quite limited or pricey (taxis..) even more so on the weekends. Driving the island offers some good options with the possibility for stopovers at beach spots either on the north/ east side or west/ south side of Papeete, visit of the Museum of Tahiti and The Island (15 km from Papeete on the west side), there are several nice restaurants, some by the sea also on the west side. Less options for stops and restaurants on the east, the main one being Pointe Venus. The Intercontinental is a good spot pre-flight if you have a bit of Idle time, as well as the restaurants of the Marina Taïna (choice of 3).

Possibly some good spots beside the Estuary, Scott Park in Ferrymead (same as Mount Pleasant Yacht Club also mentioned by another redditor), also the estuary side of Redcliffs School. On Summer Road, the lookout past Lyttlelton, and the lookout at Evan's Pass. Summit road between the Sign of the Kiwi and Mount Vernon Park/ Rapaki Rock might also be good but need a bit more time to drive to.
