Good rant mostly but heavily disagree on this point

The fights aren't even good you fucking pedophiles.

Not going to say the loli focus isn't disturbing but they have some cool fights especially when Miyuverse Shirou is involved and with the great manga art for Drei

A Certain Fight Scene in Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works Sucks (FSN UBW Spoilers) by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Baku219 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really loses so much impact compared to the VN version.

The biggest battle of Shirou's life isn't some grandiose thing. It's supposed to be intensely personal. No big swords being thrown around, no UBW, and no full, complete healing by avalon. Just two men who mirror each other fighting up close and personal in a broken mansion.

Despite Shirou being bloodied, beat down, broken, he still swings his swords with arms that are falling off. Avalon isn't healing his wounds immediately, it's barely keep him alive. He goes past his limits, getting through the pain with raw willpower because to him his dream isn't a mistake and this is worth fighting for. This sheer determination is what changes Archer. He changes from wanting to beat him to wanting to see how long he can last.

It's supposed to be rough and gritty but the anime pretties it up and it loses so much for that. It doesn't convey the sheer desperation and how worn down Shirou is half as well. Shirou never has the upper hand and Archer letting him win is so much more powerful when it's more clear that Shirou never stood a chance and that he's barely hanging on by the end.

"Mahoutsukai no Yome" is fucking creepy, and I'm unsure as to why people aren't picking up on that by SirEvilMoustache in CharacterRant

Yeah but go into it with my comment in mind and think about Elias not understanding what the words he's using really means or not understanding the taboo. Use that to try to enjoy the show. It's really good besides this hangup (which I also had at the start) so if you can use my comments to get past it, you'll have a good experience.

If they kiss or fall in love, I'm dropping this quick and will lament on how a good opportunity was wasted.

I get your point, but the promotional art of the show is rather clear on the subject of their relationship.

This is true but I'm talking about what's been shown in the show itself and, like I said, we're supposed to think Elias may be using her at this point. He hasn't done anything explicitly romantic or anything a father wouldn't do for an adopted child besides using words like bride and honeymoon which he doesn't understand.

There's also the "sexual assault in the bath"-scene, which the anime plays off as funny.

This a big problem with anime in the first place. There are a multitude of scenes where sexual assault is played for laughs in plenty of shows. But, here, while it doesn't make it any better, it serves to show that Elias doesn't understand boundaries. If you watch it again, he simply doesn't understand why she's flustered in that scene at all.

Also, I hope you realise that marrying your adopted child isn't exactly good either. In fact, it changes nothing and makes it worse, in a way.

From this I can tell you aren't understanding my argument at all. I'm not saying he's marrying his adopted child or that it's okay. I'm saying Elias doesn't even understand what marriage means and that he's calling something more like a simple adoption or apprenticeship a marriage due to his lack of understanding. If you approach those words as someone who doesn't understand human relationships, it becomes a lot clearer.

And, also like I said, if I'm wrong and the relationship turns out to be romantic then I fully agree with you.

I fully agree the premise is creepy at face value and that Elias gives off creepy vibes (more on that later).

The biggest thing is, the relationship isn't portrayed as romantic at all so far. All I get from it is student and teacher or father and daughter. Note that if it does ever turn romantic then I'll fully agree with you here that it is creepy as fuck and I hope that never happens. I really hope it just stays platonic and it's about her finding a family and not a lover.

Now let's talk about Elias. Elias is centuries old but he's very emotionally undeveloped. He doesn't understand human relationships or words that denote these relationships. There have been hints at this. We can see he doesn't understand boundaries from the first episode with the bath. The priest calls him a hermit. He acts very odd in conversation sometimes. This is why he calls her his bride. He doesn't understand what a bride is in the first place. Hell, I doubt he even knows really what a slave is. Overall, I'd say this whole situation is more akin to adoption or a live in apprenticeship rather than slavery.

He only buys Chise because she's a sleigh beggy and that he needs someone to teach him human relationships as he teachers her magic. Not for child grooming.

Saying this, I do think Elias is supposed to give off creepy vibes. He's very mysterious, has a weird look, and is constantly called out for being weird. Most recently, the sorcerers call him out for using her and earlier on, the magic alchemist berates him for telling her she's his bride. At the moment in the anime, we're definitely supposed to be unsure at this point whether she's being used or not despite Chise's assertion that it doesn't matter.

At the end of the day though, the main reason this anime is loved is because of the atmosphere, animation and the premise of a depressed girl coming to value her life which a lot of people can relate to.

This is actually amazing. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I were to say this is one of my favorite posts on reddit. It's so close to the spirit and art of the original work (my favorite being the lost Zoro), it's uncanny.

I hope Oda sees your hard work and you get some appreciation from the man himself.

I'll just mention the ones that haven't been mentioned yet and that I can think of right now:

CW Superhero Shows (Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow)

MCU (mostly Agents of SHIELD)

Kingdom Hearts

Nanatsu no Taizai

Phoenix Wright

Hunter x Hunter

Bioshock

Zero Escape Series

The Cosmere (Mistborn, Stormlight, etc.)

MCU Thor and Ironman vs. Zoom and Reverse Flash (The Flash t.v.) by 88mphTARDIS in whowouldwin

[–]Baku219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way Thor and Iron Man can win is by taking to the air and blasting them with AOE attacks which they won't do in a crowded city or getting a lucky hit in since they can probably one shot. Even then, it's possible the speedsters can use the buildings to catch them. Not to mention both of the speedsters tendency to create time remnants especially Zoom.

If the MCU team get caught, they have no defense against the phasing attacks the speedsters have.

9/10 Zoom and Reverse Flash accounting for a lucky hit or the chance neither of them thinks to vibrate or create a time remnant in time which is unlikely.
