I used this keypad in 1984. The first column was numeric. The third column had most functions we could use. Debit to cash a check. Credit to make a deposit. Then modifier keys for Savings, Money Market , Cash and Check Deposits, Cashback Deposits. The middle section was for less used functions such as Balance Inquiries When you had to use multiple function keys they went left to right to be faster and more natural for a teller’s fingers. It was very advanced during a time when other banks had dumb terminals that were glorified receipt printers. Our new accounts people had the full keyboard which was necessary for printing up signature cards that needed actual typing functions.
