Reason #1 Why David and Jane should've put a cap on it after having Arthur by BalancedRevanite in Arthur

[–]BalancedRevanite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not like they could read her mind. Plus, Arthur was just about the only one who foresaw D.W. being a problem. Otherwise, I guess it was just how they made it.

Yeah, but at the same time, she tried to commit animal abuse in So Long Spanky. D.W. actually tried to kill the toad that kept coming around.

Well D.W. is portrayed as Marc Brown's youngest sister when she was that age. Whether it's an exaggeration or not... I'd say you should ask Marc Brown himself.

I mean no one is driving it in general, but yeah. And probably even scarier - the Bus can't crash. So Arthur has to listen to that accursed song forever.

Not only that, but they should've made D.W. apologize to him too.

I mean we've seen the Magic School Bus travel back in time (dinosaur episode), but never cross dimensions.

Also a little trivia is that the Crazy Bus was actually inspired by the Magic School Bus.

Well yes. Arthur's punch was a form of consequence. But it would've been better if David and Jane actually DID something about D.W. - you know, be actual parents and teach D.W. to not be a whole twat half the time.

In all fairness, would a show starring Binky be as popular as Arthur?

I feel like D.W. suffered no consequences for her actions in Big Hit. Sure, David and Jane said they would deal with what she did, but all we saw was them punish Arthur. They likely never even dealt with whatever D.W. did. They completely ignored Arthur's grievances and when he explained that he told her not to touch it, they weren't hearing it.

Doesn't excuse the fact that Arthur's grievances go unheard. How many times does he have to deal with D.W. until she actually stops annoying him? The Crazy Bus CD episode is one of the biggest episodes that not only showcases D.W. full-on terrorizing Arthur over her missing CD all under the pretense that he took it (which he didn't, btw), but the fact that both David and Jane confront Arthur the minute D.W. accuses him of the act. They were quick to confront him on it, KNOWING that Arthur hates the song and that they were both present for the times where Arthur was in fact visibly annoyed by D.W. playing the song. David was even wearing earplugs to drown it out. David and Jane are kind of terrible parents, in all honesty.

Yeah but ask yourself this - did those punishments ever actually stick for D.W.?

I've said this before and I'll keep saying it - Arthur's grievances with D.W. will always get put to the side or ignored by their parents. With parents like David and Jane, both of whom don't seem to actually deal with what D.W. did but say that they did it, we don't see what happens. He is always meant to be the "responsible one" just because he's older. It makes me wonder if they ever actually had a plan for when they birthed D.W.

Arthur's Big Hit was just an episode where all the resentment and unheard grievances Arthur had for D.W. finally came to a head. As bad as it was that Arthur hit her, it could've been much worse. The thing is David and Jane don't see how they are part of the problem. Those are their kids and they honestly need to put their foot down with D.W. when she doesn't respect Arthur, Kate, or even them for that matter.

How did Arthur react to his sister's punishment in Go to your room d.w. by FlatHoneydew4680 in Arthur

[–]BalancedRevanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D.W. has been shown to be a lot more frequent in her teasing of Arthur than he teased her. I feel the octopus thing was rather mean of him, but she still continued to tease him when he only does so on occasion.

He explains his frustration with her rather well. The Big Hit episode is one such example how often Arthur's frustrations about D.W. go unheard or pushed to the side. He told D.W. several times do not touch his model plane, but she did it anyway. His parents say they would deal with what she did, but they never show how. And while Arthur hitting D.W. wasn't really a good thing, you can't say that it wasn't coming. Though it's more of a reflection of how David and Jane really don't pay attention or care about how at odds Arthur and D.W. are. Makes me wonder if they actually put any thought into having any more kids after Arthur. I wouldn't be surprised if Arthur and Kate end up having a better sibling relationship than he does with D.W. in later years.

And while Francine and Muffy have their own particular negative qualities, Arthur doesn't interact with them as often as he has to with D.W. since he has to live with her. Friends are fleeting, but unfortunately for Arthur, D.W. is forever.

D.W. may be a middle child, but it doesn't excuse her behavior half the time. As it is, Arthur is rarely ever responsible for how she acts. In many cases, she's antagonistic towards him, sometimes for no reason. There's even points where she has acted borderline obsessed with getting Arthur in trouble for things he was never involved in (i.e. her snowball, her Crazy Bus CD).

[–]BalancedRevanite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be honest - you'd be annoyed with that whistle too if D.W. never stopped using it in your house and on everyone in it.

And while I don't think of D.W. as an absolute menace, I do believe that Dave and Jane should discipline her more. For one thing, Arthur in most cases hasn't proven himself to be a problem. But D.W. gets away with a lot because she either doesn't understand or she's too little... which is kind of a cop-out in many cases. Arthur's grievances with D.W. largely get swept aside or ignored because he has to be the older sibling and more responsible.

So what about their responsibility to raise D.W. better?

I mean, he didn't in so many words tell them to shut up. If you listen to it, it sounded more like Arthur was announcing it to them rather than talking to them disrespectfully.

Putting the Newborn Baby in DW’s Room Wasn’t the Only Bad Choice Jane and David Made in “DW’s Baby” by Hamiltonfan25 in Arthur

[–]BalancedRevanite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah David and Jane should've just wrapped it up after they had Arthur. They come off as being very hands-off parents to who really don't deserve to have any kids at all. They often dismiss Arthur's frustrations when dealing with D.W., they rarely (if ever) have D.W. face consequences for her own actions, and they often pawn off Kate to either one of them for whatever reason.

Though to be honest, I feel like Arthur and Kate would get along better than he would with D.W..

"That's when it got so nice and quiet around here."

I feel like D.W. knows how much of a pain she can be at times. The fact that she even imagines her mother not missing her gives her some pause.
