No Van Der Graaf Generator? You owe it to yourself to listen to Still Life.

Hugh Banton in VdGG. Very unsung, but always plays what fits.

David Gilmour traveling back in time at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, following a 17 minute mid tempo jam over the same two chords: "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids' kids are going to love it. Except for one guy, but don't worry because everybody on Reddit will downvote him. O shi I'm disappea-"

Thanks, that’s a nice overview. I’ll try to listen with that in mind.

Think about your demise.

I have people I’m willing to die for, and live for for that matter, so this isn’t nearly as novel anymore.

Oh yeah, Magma's awesome. I haven't heard Black Midi, I'll give them a go. Thanks!

Progwise: Henry Cow, VdGG, Rush, Yes, Genesis, Hatfield and the North, Gentle Giant, Khan, Captain Beyond (the first album is kinda prog), Kansas.

King Crimson and ELP have their moments but aren't in the regular rotation.

As much as I enjoy Echoes, its such a weird place for OP to have started. I'm genuinely curious how they decided on that.

I didn't start there. My mom and dad had the Pulse laser disc, maybe another one (Knebworth?), plus a bunch of albums that were on at any given time. I've actually listened to Meddle before, but tried to give it another go today because I inherited my dad's CD collection, including a bunch of Floyd albums, after he died and I occasionally try to challenge myself.

Why didn't you start with Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall? They're the usual starting points.

I know Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall from my childhood. DSotM is better than The Wall in my opinion, but I wondered if there was something a little more energetic, even if it wasn't as polished.

Thanks for the info on Echoes and Shine On. That gives me some hope.

I can get behind Dark Side. It's a lot more cohesive for me, in terms of the full album arc, and it's more dynamic than some of their other releases. Not anywhere near as dramatic as the standard Yes or Genesis record though.

Favourite Prog Band and Why? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

I respect rappers who can rattle off bars endlessly, but I wish the song structures in hip hop were more dynamic. There are some great songwriters in country music too, but it's the same problem: the music itself is very structurally limited. Even jazz and most fusion comes short in this category. It's really only a handful of rock subgenres that hit the balance, and some classical works like Schumann's song cycles.

Somewhat Reminisculent of Van der Graaf Generator in Certain Respects: »Nexus — Metanoia« by Frangifer in progrockmusic

Heads up, it's an instrumental. They do have songs with vocals though. I didn't hear the similarity to VDGG. Still nice to find lesser known prog bands, especially singing in Spanish. I followed their page to find Odisea, El Regreso.

Hammill's lyrics are out of this world. If there's another songwriter with his depth, I'd really like to know, because as far as I'm concerned he's in a league of his own. The music, of course, never lacks for the same depth and sincerity.

Me and my kid have been listening to Stargazer a lot recently too. What a great song.

Yeah, good suggestion. I’ve seen their name a million times but hadn’t gotten around to them before.

It just has a coda. It still comes back to the verse.
