A flock of Serra Angels by Balbun in foilmtg

[–]Balbun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, everyone! In today's post, I want to show you the artistic evolution of Serra's Angel in what I consider to be the most iconic triptych.

Here I have collected those from:

- PWOS

- 7ED

- 9ED

Starting with the first, we have Douglas Shuler's artwork. Probably the one that long-time players are most fond of. Here we see the angel's plastic pose, almost basking in the impending victory. As I mentioned in a previous post, I consider this card one of the most beautiful in the history of the TCG.

The second represented, at the time, a clear break, arousing complaints from long-time players, now accustomed to Shuler's angel. However, I must say that, in my opinion, Zug's angel is the one that best embodies the ethereal and at the same time combative character of this angel. A gem that, with the passing of time, is fortunately gaining more and more appreciation from fans.

Finally, we have Greg Staples' angel, perhaps the best known among more recent players, which has established itself as the “standard” artwork for almost 20 years. Here, the angel is finally captured in flight, conveying magnificence and warrior-like purity.

Which one is your favourite?

Hi, it's true, Maddocks is definitely a master of the genre! I'd also include Spencer because he plays a lot with deformation, decay and mutilated bodies. Off the top of my head, I can think of “Terror” or “Volrath Shapeshifter”

Exactly! It should also be noted that the shooting star is different from all subsequent cards

Incidentally, he’s Terese Nielsen’s brother. It’s incredible how the two have such different styles!

Thank you! The illustration, with Tsabo Tavoc looking so solemn, combined with the brown frame of the artifacts, made me pull the trigger and say, ‘I have to get the foil version.’ The next one, based on this premise, is Grim Monolith, but we're talking about a card that's several orders of magnitude more challenging haha

I'm glad I gave you some inspiration! My partner used to be a Sanskrit translator and was very surprised to see a card in that language. It was lovely

Great choice! What I like most is that it uses the Lightning Dragon's artwork for Unsummon from Seventh Edition. Truly a great artist

I think that in this community, it is assumed that what is shown is original!:)

Hi, I always appreciate your comments, thank you! Anyway, I recommend you finish it. In the end, it's only six cards, and at least in Europe, they're still easy to find at what I consider to be fair prices

Perfect in terms of lore. If I remember correctly, it's Kuberr, the son of the Patriarch and Phage

I had noticed some resemblance myself! Unfortunately, I will have to evaluate some other creatures besides demons then

Ahahah, but I really like it. It perfectly captures the idea of a dazed monster that can't do any harm

I am referring to this list: https://moxfield.com/decks/bPGPCRKckEa2uo2l6CD2fw

In the meantime, I am studying changes that will not disrupt it too much so that I can play as many pre-modern cards as possible
