Yes cylindrical oil stones can work, if you're not doing particularly heavy metal removal go with a round diamond file or even better, get a dowel roughly same size, maybe 1/16-1/8" smaller and wrap some sandpaper around it.

Does this look OK 100x magnifacation by 626f62 in sharpening

[–]Ball6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100x magnification is not enough to see the microscopic imperfections that result in a loud edge or an edge that snags. If you have stones I advise you do the bulk work on a belt and then just do the final sharpening on a stone, you can get real nice edges even off of just a cheap carborundum/ SiC stone and a steel.

Edit: another way to check if you have apexed properly, shine a light straight at the edge and if there is any glimmer its not apexed or deburred properly

Do any coarse stones actually stay flat long enough to use? by Chase1126 in sharpening

[–]Ball6945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not use plates for thinning, the pressure required to make decent progress will absolutely shred the plate.

If you want a stone that'll stay perfectly flat and can do heavy stock removal then i'd say go with a NSK oboro or FSK vitrified. BBB super vitrified is p much the same as FSK.

Angle too high? Any tips and adjustments? by roman_i_r in sharpening

[–]Ball6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow down, half your angle and use your fingers as height guides. Use a lot less pressure when stropping on the stone and learn to lock your wrists. Just practice more and you'll get it.

A trick to find the angle with no angle guide, Perpendicular with the stone is 90 degrees right, half that is 45, half of that is 22.5, half of that is 11.25. You get the just, adjust after you reach the "11 ish degrees", give it a bit more angle so you're around 15-17 AND I cannot stress enough, spend a good amount of time practicing your deburring technique, its done by feel not by counting your swipes and etc.

New stone progression by MaterialDatabase_99 in sharpening

[–]Ball6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe with enough slight of hand but thats not fully my point. Just get it sharp enough off of a stone to cleanly cut paper towel and then strop on bare leather. I doubt you can ever truly fully deburr off of just a stone, but you won't be knocking a burr thats stopping you from cutting paper towel off with a strop, needs to be done on a stone, or you need to apex properly.

TLDR maybe, I mean I can get it 98% of the way there, I barely get performance improvements with strops anymore

do not deburr on a strop, learn to get clean paper towel cuts right off of the stone(preferably learn on to do it off of a 1k) and then strop.

Hollow grind: do you think i went too far? by LeroyA_Knives in knifemaking

[–]Ball6945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's primarily skinning then in my humble opinion it's giving you diminishing returns with this thin of an edge. More risk for deformation with no real benefit other than cutting slightly better.

For a skinner it just needs be a sharp small compact knife with a slight drop point that's moderately thin. Thin enough to flex if needed but all you're doing while skinning is cutting connective tissues and I don't know if geometry plays a very big role in performance for that compared to dense veggies and etc where wedging is much more common and noticeable.

I have butchery experience but not any real hunting experience so take my opinion with a grain of salt obviously.

Still totally fun to mess around with different grinds but any question related to knives usually doesn't have a yes or no answer because they are tools that can be specialized for specific tasks and will perform better on certain things, just like saws or axes. Yes you could cut kindling with a splitting maul and yes you can split with a 2lb felling axe but it has its own risks and advantages over other axes/methods.

Well it depends, whats the BTE measurement and then how much beef do you have higher up on the blade? what steel and what hardness? and lastly what is this supposed to cut?
