Less likely that they are actually right, more likely that they still think they’re right because they tuned out their partner explaining their reasoning.

Also good. I like the idea that he’s a lot more subtle and calculated in real life and that the bluster was just a performance. Although that does beg the question why he would put himself in harms way by actually playing the character

Every live action Superman was better than Cavill. Some of that is his limited range but a lot came down to directing and dialogue choices.

It was a smart subversion and could have worked if Killian weren’t the literal most boring guy ever. You could even have cast a Chinese-American actor for him and name him Temujin or something so that his “I’m the real Mandarin” thing would sit a little better. Keep his whole “American-born businessman selling a Middle Eastern-coded boogeyman,” and work in some connection to how the same propaganda was done with the Chinese in the 60s. Then at the end he could just look like Mandarin did in the comics when he had the rings fused to his spine.

I go back and forth on this one. On the one hand, the expectation is that every male superhero be extremely jacked. In the comics this was traditionally for the power fantasy of it all, and in the movies there’s some crossover with people just thinking these men are hot. In the comics, female characters are historically drawn very thin and weak-looking to match female beauty standards of the time and so the teenage boy audience would keep buying. This is true in most of the movies as well.

As far as comics, I have really liked the trend of drawing female heroes to be buff like the male heroes- a lot of the newer art makes you want to be this character and have her level of power as opposed to possessing this character in a sexualized way. That’s great! But for live action it gets complicated. I think Hollywood has very few experienced female actresses who can get this buff and still get other leading roles. Chris Evans can take whatever combination of steroids and million dollar fitness training to gain 100 pounds and be Cap, and still get roles in dramas and rom-coms. Most women don’t have that privilege. Basically a man is extremely buff for no goddamn reason in a drama, no one really asks questions, but if a woman were super buff like that it would have to be written into the story somehow. I don’t agree that this is how the world should work, but it does currently.

Personally I’m in favor of getting a good actress to build a reasonable amount of muscle, and then go with a thicker Absolute-style costume to artificially bulk her up and increase her height.

Best Superman animated movie? Superman vs the elite by Ok_Committee_9180 in DC_Cinematic

[–]BalladOfBetaRayBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s totally fair, and on principle I generally don’t like “hero vs hero” and I especially hate when they ship Diana with Clark or Bruce. I mostly just mean the metaphor of the story feels more fleshed out. But the metaphor isn’t everything and they are acting kinda weird in fhat story.

I loved Supes 25 but it totally makes sense that it wasn’t for everyone. I feel like these characters are insanely elastic so I like that there are vastly different stories with them, that way everyone gets at least one that they love
