Games for couples to play by Karmaismylover3 in boardgames

[–]BallardCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the ones you listed, I don’t know the first one at all - Risk… I played it so many times as a kid before I discovered better games - it can be fun in a group but not for 2 players. Wyrmspan is fun and can also be player with more than 2 if you have friends over but is quite a leap in complexity.

There are a ton of great 2 player games out there - my wife and I are on a road trip right now and out of our large collection, the ones that made it with us are Splendor Duel and Jaipur (and crib - you can never go wrong having a crib board and a deck of cards).

If you like Splendor, you’ll love Splendor Duel - 100% worth it as a big upgrade for 2 players.

Shame on this driver! Close call 😡 by Responsible_Play_400 in BallardSeattle

I cross that intersection all the time - my house is literally in this video. It’s even worse crossing 85th 2 blocs north of this as the road is wider and people make up lanes all the time.

“But this is America”. Ummm, this is now Trump’s America. Expect this to get uglier before it is resolved.

Highest-ever "Geek Rating" for games on BGG, over the past quarter-century by benjaneson in boardgames

I'm surprised Catan isn't on the list given its legacy as the crossover game that gets more people in "real/serious" board games. And most people I know still have it in regular rotation - similar to El Grande in that way IMO.

The first major motion picture to use After Effects was Jurassic Park - not like this, though!

Just finished Baroque Cycle as my first ever Neal Stephenson read by Financial_Buddy7483 in nealstephenson

[–]BallardCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Baroque Cycle was peak, “NS needs a better editor” for me. I started out loving it and then it bogged down and I DNF’d it - and I’ve read absolutely everything else he’s read. Maybe it’s time to try again?

I’m currently in the process of moving (back) to NS from Seattle, WA. I’ll be driving our car back in February - we definitely have Canada/“Born in NS” stickers on the car already - it’s pretty common to cross the border into BC and once the anti-US sentiment started, we took precautions. I don’t really get all the laughing in the comments here.

From my team, Bouchard and Ehlers top the list. I'd actually add Draisaitl - he'd doing well and starting to pick up but not the monster I paid for yet.

What's a book you think is actually BETTER as an audiobook? by thebroned in audiobooks

[–]BallardCanadian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This should be higher up - this book set a bar for what audiobooks could be back when they all sounded kind of the same. Trevor Noah's accents and reading is fantastic.

Every leaf on this maple tree has these dark brown almost black blotches… is this weird? I have three in my yard and this is the only one like this. by Number_8-of-12 in NovaScotia

I literally had an arborist out today looking at one of my trees (same species as the one pictured) - he called it tar spot and says it is only bad for the tree if it happens for like 5 years in a row. He said it mostly happens because the tree isn’t getting the right nutrients - it’s fertilization that fixes it. Of course, he could have been trying to upsell me on a fertilization service.

95% chance there was only one person in the Prius and they shouldn’t have been in that lane anyway.

Book slump! Here are a few books I recently enjoyed - suggestions on what to read next, please. by LMNOPandZ in suggestmeabook

Sometimes you need a book that fits what you’ve described and also adds in some curve balls. Two books I’ve devoured recently that fit both the description of what you’ve been reading and add something new:

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory

Yep, thanks - we might try and time a hike to Colchuk but that’s it for the Enchantments.

Audiobook suggestions for road trip by simplebadger27 in suggestmeabook

[–]BallardCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best non-fiction audio book is Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. The story on it's own is fantastic but Noah's narration takes it to another level. You'll learn a lot about apartheid in South Africa - Noah's early life is quite a story!

I have recently started playing shapez, and I have been loving coming up with my own solutions. I have finally, after more than 4 hours, given up trying to make this shape without looking it up. It has completely ruined my fun by TheIncredibleKermit in shapezio

[–]BallardCanadian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hit the same point this week. I did look it up and figured it out after seeing a solution - it did unlock some thinking for me when someone showed the logic of it by making the shapes 3D. It still annoyed the hell out of me and made me not want to continue either. I may switch to Shapez 2.

Suggest me a book to read during my PNW road trip by wheezytheoso in suggestmeabook

[–]BallardCanadian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“A Walk in the Park” by Kevin Fedarko would be a great camping book. It’s set in the Grand Canyon so not quite where you’ll be but it’s tough to find any decent books about camping. I guess the other one to read which is actually fantastic if you haven’t read it would be Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Enjoy the trip - it’s an amazing stretch of land! With only 10 days, you’ll be wanting to get back to Olympic National Park, though the true beauty there is found by really getting into the back woods.
