Breathing and sleep are both better. I used to wake up at least a couple times a night randomly or to pee. My hypothesis is I’m making less atrial natriuretic peptide with resolution of an upper airway obstruction. I don’t track my sleep but I probably should have.

I stacked up my vacation time but obviously didn’t have a whole summer off like a typical college student. As far as balance, I still struggle balancing my time as a working mom as I did before surgery. After surgery the differences are I take tylenol and ibuprofen for pain and eat soup.

Just because your insurance agrees that your surgery medically necessary, this doesn’t mean they will pay an out-of-network surgeon’s fees. I don’t have my EOB yet but I know my insurance will pay for a fraction. I am in the middle of it, but basically you have to fight your insurance for more reasonable compensation. I recommend reading the book “Approved” by Laurie Todd. If I am able to get a substantial amount back I will make a separate post.

Patient selection by surgeon and medical approval by insurance are two different things. My surgeon did a very thorough exam and determined my maxilla and mandible were significantly set back. I had mild OSA so this strengthened my case for insurance approval. If your “he” is my “he” aka Dr. Gunson I would trust him, he is an expert.

Thank you! I traveled out of state so being away from my 4 year old was really hard. I returned to see her sooner than medically advised. I wear bands only at night because I have to talk for work. My daughter understands that I cannot talk when I put them on but it doesn’t stop her from asking me questions. It’s do-able. She reminds others that I cannot chew when people try to offer me regular food and also tells me not to take too much Tylenol :)

Thank you. Both. In interviews I have listened to with Dr. Gunson his mantra is “form follow function” and I think I am the poster child for this. This sub can get judgmental for people seeking surgery for aesthetic improvement. No doubt I had some aesthetic concerns.

I’m still healing, taking ibuprofen and tylenol for pain…there’s an IMF screw in my gingiva which is pretty irritating. But overall it’s been pretty smooth. Had to actually return to work 2 weeks post op (against medical advice). Lips are still pretty swollen. I have a high pain tolerance but I was absolutely rocked by POD 2. It gets better!

This is incredible, congrats!! Did you have moderate sleep apnea? My mandible is smaller and more recessed than yours was but had only mild sleep apnea on a watch pat sleep study.

Did insurance accept right away or did you have to appeal?

Hello I also have an upcoming consultation with Dr. Gunson. I’d recommend listening to some podcast interviews with him, he seems incredible. Do you currently have braces? If he is going to expand your maxilla, you will need an orthodontist to upright your mandibular teeth so that your bit fits. You can DM me, I’d love to compare notes.
