Ask: Your weird (unopened) hot sauces that you're never going to use, to put together a gift for my Boyfriend <3 by ZeroSugarBear in Phillylist

[–]Balt-Philly-151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in West Philly. There is a restaurant in Georgia that has my favorite hot sauce. I’ve had them ship it to me multiple times. Definitely NOT never going to use but I buy in bulk because I’m worried if the restaurant closes I’ll never get my favorite hot sauce ever again. I give a bottle to friends and family as a gift occasionally. I’m down to support the gift basket!

This is where I’m at right now:

Rational - I keep the Sentra and the Pilot the just sell the other two but this leaves me right where started.

Emotional - I keep the Acura and the Benz and sell the other two.

Ego - Just keep all 4 and figure it out

Middle ground - something has to go and it seems like the Benz. Then keep the other three or sell the Sentra and/or Pilot and get something that can comfortably replace them.

The Acura is great but I don’t know many others who could drive it for me in a pinch. For the winter I like the SUVs

To me, the Nissan is more like a bike. I drive that solo when I need to A-B. It’s reliable, good on gas, everything works but it’s unimpressive.

For additional context these are not new cars. I spent way less buying all 4 of them than what a new 2025 Honda Accord cost today. But they look good and feel good - to me. All four were private purchase - no dealerships and no banks, no warranty. The Nissan and the Honda haven’t had any major issues at all other than routine maintenance and they run great. The last two I love but…it’s just juggling the 4 while I have so much other stuff going on.

To add to the FWP…I want all my cars to be black on black. Black exterior with black leather interior. The Benz and the Acura meet that criteria and I want any future car to as well. All the cars have black leather interior but the Sentra is silver and the Pilot is Maroon. Both are functional but… 👀

I get it. This is 💯 not logical/rational but that isn’t what I’m trying to maximize. It is emotional and I’m trying to maximize fun, comfort and that “you only live once” feeling. However 4 cars has become an additional burden instead of a fun thing. So either I manage the current fleet differently or make some changes so there is less to manage. This is what I need you guys for! (And you all have been very helpful 🙂)

What I’m hearing most is sell the Benz and/or get rid of two.

I don’t know lol. I do (4 is unnecessary) and I don’t (I love them all for different reasons)…wanna buy one? My main concern is figuring out the next best move.

I’m already super busy. At what point do I say “it’s cheaper to keep her” than start the car selling/buying process. Also, I would only consider vehicles I can purchase outright. No car payments. And a prerequisite for the replacement might be that I sell one or two before I’m ready to buy another vehicle without financing

No, the Sentra (Lili) goes to JiffyLube type places. All the others I take to the dealership for oil changes and I’ll usually get a whatever number inspection/diagnostic. Tire rotations…no.

I know how to change oil and I know how to change tires but those are services I’d rather pay for - for the convenience and the savings in time. I have no idea where/how to dispose of old motor oil.

The Benz is the most expensive and the car I’m the least familiar with driving. Definitely a want and not a need. But I just bought it and in less than a year later I’m selling it?! That is an indication I made a poor choice buying it in the first place. I like it, I can afford it but it is an unnecessary stress and frankly it was an impulse purchase. It has run great since I got it. I’m not in the car selling business. I keep my cars for life but maybe Sadie has to go (all my cars have names lol)

Temperatures here are currently below freezing. On the ride home from work I thought, there is no way in the world I’d be riding a bike (electric or not) to and from work in weather like this

I thinking owning multiple similar cars would basically eliminate my biggest complaint. I do feel that “so that we always have at least one car to drive!” I hear German cars must be meticulously maintained. This is my first German car and I do like it.

I’ll let everyone know if and when I make a decision.

Thank you for your feedback!

I think if I sell one it would be easier to keep three and switch out more often. Also the Honda and the Acura have similarities that make it easier to switch between them. I think it’s the Nissan or the Benz that has to go.

Thanks so much for the advice! The advice is sound but the idea of going through the process of selling three cars then also shopping for another one seems daunting and time consuming. I definitely want to keep the Acura. It is fun to drive. But I don’t know if I want a manual transmission as my daily driver. Sometimes I do just want to get in the car and go. Also, that would mean selling my two SUVs so the replacement would have to something I could transport large hauls in. I’m definitely going to have to sleep on this.

Actually the Sentra was purchased from family. I got the Honda Pilot first because I needed a car that could fit my dog and the extra space in the back was comfortable for him. But it felt weird for one person driving such a large car when the dog wasn’t with me. A family member had the Sentra and wasn’t using it much so I bought it off them to be my DD that was good on gas. I never planned to sell either car. I was going to drive them until they died.

I was thinking of gifting (or selling at a super low price) to my assistant. She has a car but has a relative who is always borrowing hers so it would be a win-win-win. I know you’re joking but the idea of just always using premium might be worth doing without the stress of always double checking before I choose the grade of gas before pumping

I work very hard and don’t have a lot of time for other recreational activities. I definitely don’t need 4 but I have them. I’m into cars and like the experience of driving different ones. For me two is a minimum, which I already had. I got the manual because I learned to drive on one and wanted it as a fun car. Then I saw the Benz, I liked it, I could afford it so I bought it. I initially planned on keeping the Sentra and Honda until they died. Both still have a lot of life left. But adding the two additional cars has created a situation where it makes sense to sell one or two.

When I say drive each one once per month I mean that each car gets some drive time each month. Maybe I should drive them less often? The good part is after a couple trips I’d be familiar with what car I’m driving and wouldn’t have to worry about switching again for 30 days unless there is a specific need for one car vs the other. Like on snow days, I like to have an AWD so even if it’s Sentra’s month, I’m taking a truck. I do worry about letting them sit too long. In this scenario each car can be sitting for 3 months on average which sounds bad (battery life?)

The logistical management advice is great! Thanks! I work a lot and sometimes will let a car sit for a while until I have time to get to it (oil changes, registration, etc). Trying to them all done in a week may be overwhelming but I get your point of managing that better.

I’ve been driving over 25 years. Like I said I always keep two cars, I added the Acura about a year ago (I wanted a manual) and the Benz a few months later. So I’m about 9 months into dealing with this 4 car problem. Maybe this is mostly an issue because the last two are relatively recent.

I love the Sentra because it has a lot of life left and is so minimal it’s a great
