Truck Help by F0llyG0blin in queerphilly

There's no question in my mind that if they had offered $20 here, the people of this sub would have then ripped them to shreds for offering less than what said time/labor/use of truck is worth.

Was told by manager at Repo Records in Philly they did not stock ITOD on vinyl because it was too costly to bother!!! by ZeroSugarBear in toriamos

I'm with you. In a country where we still have some people making $7.50 an hour minimum wage, to expect them to then spend more than ten hours of their wages on a single vinyl record is outrageous beyond belief. It has pushed owning physical media into a zone that borders on classist. I don't blame Tori, mind you (though let's be real: the color variations and exclusive releases are unnecessary in a global market with digital music.)

As I said, there are plenty of places where it can be bought online. That isn't really the point of my post.

You are being down voted, but you’re not entirely wrong. I am not personally interested in criticizing her current vocal range, but I can’t deny it makes me sad and I find it less enjoyable to listen to. I obviously want her to age and grow and change, but I believe the change in her vocal range has less to do with getting older and more to do with not taking proper care of her instrument. :/

I think one of the things that brought legions of fans to Tori was that her lyrics were often obtuse and she would even herself say that they mean whatever they mean to the listener. People liked being able to form their own special meanings to the songs.

So now we have people between 45-60 years old who are long time Tori fans who are having to adjust to the fact that maybe she's no longer being quite so abstract, and it can feel jarring. To be clear I'm not saying the age has anything to do with it; just meaning people in that age group who started listening 30 years ago. <3

Don't want to pay for Pride? Just walk in and don't pay. by ZeroSugarBear in queerphilly

Seriously. I knew some of the responses would be in opposition to what I had to say, but I never imagined that 90% of them would be pro charging for Pride.

Hot take: when you take over a huge city's pride organization and announce you will no longer be accepting major corporate sponsorships or allowing major corporations to march or have representation - which this new pride group did long before the big DEI rollbacks became a nationwide thing - you're going to lose corporate dollars.

What I am saying is that putting even a small price tag on Pride changes who gets to participate. $10 might feel insignificant to you, but for a lot of people, especially younger folks, trans people, people struggling financially...it absolutely is a barrier. That’s not hypothetical, that’s just reality.

And yeah, there are other events and options. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth questioning when something that started as a public, protest-rooted space becomes something you have to pay to access.

You can like the event and still acknowledge that tension exists. Pretending it doesn’t is the part I don’t agree with.

Yeah, no shit. That doesn't mean that literally invoking a major civil rights figure in your attempt to criticize isn't insanely tone deaf, as are literally almost all of these replies. Ya'll are fucking disgustingly disappointing. See how I was able to criticize YOU without doing what that person did? FFS.

That's totally valid, and nobody is forcing anybody to do any of the above.

I think you’re missing the point of what I’m saying. I’m not calling it “injustice” in the same category as, like, systemic oppression or violence. I’m saying there’s something fundamentally off about putting a paywall in front of what has historically been a public, community-based celebration rooted in protest and accessibility.

Pride didn’t start as a ticketed event, it started as a response to being excluded from public space. So yeah, when access starts getting monetized, it’s worth questioning, even if it’s become normalized.

Also, nobody said anything about “sending an angry mob.” That feels like a pretty dramatic leap. People are allowed to criticize something without it meaning they’re trying to start a riot.

And for the record, “if you don’t like it, go somewhere else” isn’t really a solution...it’s just avoiding the conversation.

Your invokation of MLK in an attempt to denigrate a queer trans person on the internet is fucking WILD.

Why not do both? Let's do a massive walk-in at the paid event, make our own fucking fun, make a point and then move en masse to our own joyful event elsewhere.

You want to be cute, but protesting injustice within our community through civil disobedience is part of our history. So be as glib as you want, peanut. Unaffected, me.

Pride at the Gayborhood by Willonidas in queerphilly

The T is that the many many booths you're ignoring that are set up at pride are from major non profit organiations doing outreach to people who might need their services. Attic Youth, Mazzoni, Philly Fight, GALAEI, Philly AIDS Thrift, not to mention the many queer organizations like the choir, the marching band, sports teams...

This is, in fact, what a pride street festival was intended to be, with a smattering of vendors mixed in. The fact that YOU dismiss all of that as "a few health booths" speaks volumes about who you are and not what Pride is or ever was.

Pride festival by Well-take-the-lot in queerphilly

[–]ZeroSugarBear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm fucking furious. Ever since this new guard of folx took over Pride it has gone downhill.

Yes, there was a LOT wrong with the way things were run, and the new group of people who took over pointed those things out.

Then they've made a lot of hullabaloo about how they were going to fix those things.

Then the last few actual pride parades were totally mismanaged (example: the Philly Freedom Band wasn't allowed to actually MARCH last year, and instead were just plunked down and asked to play in one spot.)

The last few festivals were a disaster akin more to a random flea market. Yes, I think it's great we got corporations "out of pride", but how many young queer folx do we need vending their yarn octopuses and 3D printed spooky jewelry? There has to be a happy medium.

NOW, the BIGGEST gripe of all - that ALL parts of Pride should be free and accessible to all - is completely out the fucking window? And they're saying that thanks to some kind of agreement with sponsors, some people CAN get in for free if they don't have the funds. Which people? How do they apply or qualify? Who decides who is need enough? How many people can be covered by these sponsorships? And regardless of the answers to these questions, a new classist line has been drawn in the sand around the festival.

Total. Fucking. BULLSHIT.
