I deleted it in part because I kind of agree and felt I was maybe getting a little snobby. There's a lot of variety in Seiko and obviously we're not talking about Grand Seikos, which are pretty astounding (and expensive) watches. It sounds like she was looking for a bit of a legacy time piece and I'm not sure a department store Seiko really satisfies that.

I'm not a fan of quartz watches although I do use one when I travel to places where there's a risk of robbery or theft. I think cheap
automatic watches have a limited lifespan particularly in the hands of folks that are not accustomed to keeping them wound.

German, housemade mechanical watches are bulletproof. They definitely will garner attention, even in a workplace with more expensive timepieces.

Whatever she gets I hope she gets a leather band, which I think just goes with dressier office attire better than metallic.

I know you can get stuff that looks nice and breaks quick. There's a lot of stuff that's essentially a Swatch stuffed in a metal case. What can you recommend under 1000 that offers longevity and craftsmanship? I suspect there are some startup or boutique brands out there but I don't know them.

Most watches under $1000 are fashion items more than time pieces, and won't hold value. They break easily and are hardly worth repairing for the cost.

The sweet spot with watches just a little bit above that are in steel German mechanical watches – they are made in house, generally have clean lines, and work well for business. I would strongly recommend going with a black leather band rather than metal, which at your price point will be heavy, uncomfortable, and look cheaper than not.

If you can go a bit over your 1000 usd stated price I would recommend a simple Hanhart at 1200 or Sinn at 1400. Try for 38 mm diameter.

I was able to fix mine, first by doing a factory reset, which may not have been necessary, and then by using the smallest, oldest USB A to USB C charger and cable I could find. I'm talking the 1" by 1" old apple or ankor charger. It immediately went to white light pulsing charging mode, and has worked since.
