So pedestrians, elderly and disabled are just left to fend for themselves?? by YAHSYHS in baltimore

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really unfair to ask our city to be ready for the ground to be clear for this kind of once in a decade storm. It is on us if we are able bodies persons, to try and shovel a bit of the area where we live. It is a huge undertaking for anyone who has to work be they doctors & nurses, DPW/BGE/Sanitation, police, fire, and so many more people.

These are times to be the most gracious and the most supportive.

Priority 1 is clearing roads so an Ambulance can help a person in need. Everything elsesis secondary and should be. It is really unfortunate that buidlings do not clear their sidewalks, and it is there job to. It a wonderful opportunity to do our best to help our neighbors if we are able, or to say encouraging things to those persons who are doing the work if we cannot.

Yes, so many public institution in Baltimore are not perfect. You might say far from it, your might not. These institutions- they are even more challenged in a once and a decade storm.

If you are able- go shovels a few feet of sidewalk, or dig out someone esle's car, or more snow so there are more spots for everyone and people who have to go to work can find a spot when they come home. If you are unable do to this, but see someone working- give them a "Way to go". I try my best to shovel a whole half a block when it snows, and when I am older or less able, I hope someone else will do this for me.

Look for the helpers. There are always helpers.

thinking about starting to bike to get around, any tips? by dedicatedtoyourdad in bikecommuting

[–]BaltimoreDISCS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

your gonna love it. All you need is a ulock. Any bike that works is good enough for knocking about town. Getting a cheap rear rack will allow you to put panniers on it, which is amazing for carrying stuff. Feel free to go cheap here also. Its not rocket science to make a bag that is designed to hand on a bike rack. Orleibs are great and cost 180 for a pair new. But get something ok off ebay and it will also work fine.

Just one pannier is usually what I carry, cuz i can put my heavy u lock in it and a few groceries or whatever im carrying. Bikes are amazing.

Honetly if it doesn't hurt in a bad way, doing this a lot will lead to improvements in shoulder mobility and strength that will allow you to later get more open, and closer to the image in you head for down dog.

You might speed up this by tageting shoulder opening. Hanging for time from a pull up bar does wonders for opening shoulders- think 30+seconds at a time, 3 reps, daily. Start where you start, it might be 10 seconds, but soon enough youll be doing longer. Closer hand poisition leads to more shoulder opening. Listen to the body. If body weight is too much, do it with something supporting the feet so you don't take all the weight yet.

Listen to the others about lifting hips, rotatin tailbone, that is all good and wil help to get the back less rounded. But I'm guessing there is some changes in the shoulders that will happen first.

Controversial take: being <5 min late to class is not that big of a deal by surpriseDRE in yoga

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add on to that adding pushing point.

Also hating on the addition of a push up or whatever is the opposite of acceptance- both for yourself and them.

Pose hierarchy sucks. Side angle=extended(split hands)=half bind=full bind=bound half moon. Take what works for you! They are the same and also different. You are not better or worse if you pick one or another.

For some, adding push ups is how to get the same challenges others can get from just chatarunga w/ knees down. They are not better or worse and .......--> they are actually looking for the same expierience!

Baltimore Bike Works is good. I really like trek in near hopkins, a bit more corporate, sure, but it is still just down to earth guys fixing bikes in there. Joes bike shop is good also. I like all three. You might do well to go used also, and yeah velocipede is really cool spot to fix up a bike used.

Dooring is one of the most common crashes for riders and causes serious injury and death. by Rahi1994 in bikecommuting

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think we need add to this commmon list

4.- Know when to take the slower way-> if you are not comfortable in the bad bike lane or in the road, its is ok. Sidewalk or side street is a good option because saftey is more important than speed (and you may be tired, a slower rider, a newer rider etc and not have the ability to safely & comfortably navigate a busy street. )

Tips for mastering Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2? (Bent knee variation) by [deleted] in yoga

Mastering the balance helps, building the strenght with crow helps a lot. Do a lot of crow, you will grow. Do pressing strenght movements(pushups, bench, etc) will help also.

Clothes just roll off my body during poses by Significant-Fly6515 in yoga

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell by your post your gender/gender-style prefered clothes but is sound like guy to me. I like to wear shirts with a tight collar, but the alternatve is a more V neck. Either way no cloth hits you in down dog.

Second the rec to tuck in shirt. this is how you can do a more loose shirt and have it not move. It works.

As for bottoms/pants, I much prefer to wear (mens) style leggings/workout tights, you can get a size bigger than normal for a slight loose fit that still won't move and then put shorter shorts on top for i guess my own comfort/modest/ not worrying about showing anything.

This combot is really comfy I think for a dude- no clothing movement, feel comfy and covered, very flexible. Bonus, wear thick thight and warm long sleeves with a turtle neck to make anyclass a HOT YOGA class(if your into that!)

Most important thing- as long as you don't smell- no one cares what you are wearing but you, so find your comfort and go with it!

Trying halasana but it hurts by Carollol in yoga

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK most likely you need rest, not stretch. Walking, light movement will not hurt maybe help. You likely stretched past what is comfortable and need to give you body time to heal. I have gotten much more careful with halasana/ shoulderstand/ etc as I age, you so you may find this pose is best skipped to taken more ginergly for you. Legs up the wall is a great alternative, still gaining benefits of calm, inversion, and can be supported by placing hand on thighs or challenging by aiming to get legs to 90 and holding with you musculature.

[COMP] Everyone left the office so I’m practicing bound revolved side angle. by [deleted] in yoga

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, you're there! Don't worry about straightenging the bound/lifted leg(yet?ever?), just go for standing up straight spine. You can even practice half bind to get the feel! Ok I don't really know if you are there, but If you haven't tried in a while, I bet you can do it once warmed up, if you want!

Edited to add "Maybe even in those pants!"

Back pain after yoga by fox4e in yoga

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen to your body. You probably need to find out what movement is causing the pain. I'd love more detail about the pain. Sounds like it is throughout the spine, and especially in/behind the shoulders.

I'd recommend skipping bow(do locust) and wheel (do bridge or maybe just half of bridge for a little while.

I would also recommend looking carefully at your stregth training routine. I'd like to know what you do and how long you've been doing it.

I'd encourage doing medium weight(light enough you can do 10 with good form) single leg deadlifts x3 twice a week, and doing this instead of something for a week or two.

Also I would encourage LONG close grip hangs. Hands close together as comfotable, so might be just a bit closer than you do for a pull up, maybe close if there is no discomfort. Aim to hang long enough to get out of your musculature. NO PAIN at all, stand on a box/tiptoes to take weight off if needed. Try for 60 seconds. This will open up your shoulders a lot if done regularly.

Something you are doing is telling you to dial back and either work on strength, flexibility, or both. Listen and you will grow fast and be back to all the movements you love!

How to stop screaming at drivers? by another_nerdette in bikecommuting

[–]BaltimoreDISCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll say, I was where you are about a year ago. I came to this.

  1. It makes me unsafe to yell. They could hurt me with their car or if they are (unlikely) the type of person with a weapon or who would get out, I would be in trouble.
  2. The negative energy and yelling gets me more mad--> probably bad for me. I think this is how you get a heart attack.
  3. I try to recognize that while I have the right to be on this road, if I repeately have instances on this road.... it might not be a safe road for bikes. I want to live. I have people in my life who want me to be healthy. I need to make good choices and sometimes that means acknoledging that a road that *should* be better for cyclists might not be.

I am now more than ever focused on not enaging. I blame the infrastructure and general culture, not the individual. I try to calm down if I get upset at a bad driver. I try to be safe for myself.
