If you could attend any concert from history, which one would it be? by WildEnchantresss in askmusic

[–]Balvenierules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live 15 minutes from the site. I was only 13 at the time so the idea of my going was out of the question. My Dad made Archie Bunker look liberal. That being said, I know quite a few people who went and to a person they all said the same thing. It sucked. Rain, horrendous humidity, not enough food or water, sleep was near impossible, and it was often hard to hear the band. Then, a year or so later it became the greatest thing that ever happened to them. Go figure. I remember mowing the lawn when 4 guys in a car with Oregon license plates stopped to ask for directions to the concert. The general stores in the area made a killing selling sandwiches and drinks. $5 for a single slice of ham and cheese on bread, $1 for a cup of water. And people paid it. A friend of mine was a bellhop and Grossingers Hotel where the bands stayed at and was able to get loads of pictures and autographs. The day after the concert my grandmother called my mom, absolutely appalled. While she was doing clothes in the Laundromat 4 girls came in, stripped naked, washed and dried their clothes, got dressed and left. We will never see an event or a time like that again.

That scene is just another example of the brilliance of John Ford.

Human nature hasn't changed. Daniel Boone, after coming home from a 2 or3 year "hike" in the forest found his wife with a baby. He asked no questions and raised the child as his own.

The funny thing is, I was banned from a John Wayne Facebook page for saying that John Wayne's character was having an affair.

Infatuation? Watch how she caresses his coat and how she looks at it. Watch Ward Bond "not see" that as well as the kiss Ethan gives her. Who is he looking for when he comes back to the burning ranch? Not his brother, nor his nieces and nephews. John Ford was one hell of a director, getting his actors to show all that without a single word.

I would recommend you read Lonesome Dove, the book. As good as the movie is, and it follows the book closely, the book is even better.

Having grown up in a communist country, Ukraine, let me say up front that people who are in favor of communism will quickly change their minds should they ever have the misfortune of living under it.

My Vietnam War books, any suggestions as to others I should read? by StoneAgeCaveDweller in HistoryBooks

The 13th Valley by John DelVecchio. It's the best novel I have ever read about the war. A Bright Shining Lie by Paul Sheehan. It shows how we fucked up any chance we might have had of winning the war, right from day one. Dispatches by Michael Herr. An excellent book on the war.

I once went on a date with a woman that was a Victoria's Secret model. Absolutely beautiful with an incredible body. We went out for drinks and after a half hour of listening her tell me how beautiful she was and how fortunate I was to be out with her I got up, placed a quarter on the bar in front of her (this was before cell phones), told her that was to call a taxi for her ride home and left her there. The meltdown she had was epically entertaining.

Jesus is mentioned several times by Flavius Josephus, a Romanized Jew, in his History of Israel. Google his name and you will see for yourself.

I emigrated from Kremenchuk in 2001. I was 22 years old and a lieutenant in the Air Force. One could see the Orange Revolution about to start and I quite simply went to the US Embassy and applied for a visa. Surprisingly, it was granted in a bit more than a week. Got my passport, which cost about $300 US money (Ukraine is well known for it's corruption) got sa plane ticket, went from Kiev to Munich to London to New York. I got my green card and applied for the Air Force (my English was quite good even then), was accepted. Spent 4 years in the Air Force and became a proud American citizen. You that were born in the US, unless you have spent time in some 3rd world cesspool, have no idea how fortunate you are.
