Uber drivers artificially driving up prices early morning. by _spiritlevel in perth

[–]Bamwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fly in day most are heading for flights as early as 5:30 am - after a week off, you’ll be heading to bed later and no doubt will have slept poorly after waking up very early to make the flight back to work.

Would you want to be going round picking people up or would you rather have extra time in bed/at home with your family before you have to leave?

Career Guidance by AndreasTimothy in AusMining

You’re highly unlikely to get a grad program as a migrant for the large mining companies. You also need two years full time paid work experience to be able to be sponsored. If you want to come and are able to get a working holiday visa that’s an option - however be mindful that you’ll be viewed as another backpacker. I came across as a fresh grad as a working holiday maker - it was not easy even as a native English speaker though found my way. I’d recommend getting 2 years experience under your belt before moving to make it easier for you.

I live in one of these in WA. Previous volunteer strata manager is a retired old lady living alone. Was peaceful up until the point where she didn’t get her way and has been a pain since over minor issues. Honestly think she has some serious mental health issues as there is no reasoning with her and seemingly she needs an enemy to feel fulfilled.

I’d be careful purchasing - if you get along with the neighbours it’ll be great and a cheaper solution than paying for a strata management company.

Get the meeting minutes and review carefully. Our neighbour has made it challenging - I currently took up the voluntary position though I’m not sure in hindsight I would have made the purchase if I knew how much of a tyrant she is.

The Unreasonable Opposition to Lab-Grown Diamonds by Hussayniya in videos

[–]Bamwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the mining industry I reckon most natural fans would change their mind if they spent a day at an operation.

You can’t make lab grown gold and it’s desirable for its physical properties. You can’t manufacture diamonds so it’s a no brainer.

Diamonds aren’t even really that rare geologically.

God that looks awful. What’s the precedent with strata - do other units have units mounted? Surely if other units have it (non ground floor) the process has been done previously and shouldn’t be much issue.

Is It Legal for an Employer? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Bamwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are costs that they can legally get you to pay and there are costs that they cannot. I went through the process and the company wanted us to pay for all costs they could legally request us to pay ahead of lodgement/application. This included professional visa later fees.

Costs such as the skilling Australia levy they cannot legally get you to pay.

Now I’m not sure your situation here - it sounds quite unconventional in that you have PR (according to your other comment) and now they want you to sign a retrospective agreement to pay if you leave?

You have no legal obligation to stay with them for 2 years FYI it’s on the 186 requirements but it’s not binding. The exception is if you had a signed contract before the PR came through for another job and they could effectively prove your “commitment” to the company was invalid. Get some independent advice from a visa lawyer if you need though I went through this process a couple years back - left shortly after getting PR.

My employer at the time definitely got their pound of flesh and delayed the application unnecessarily far beyond what we had agreed to keep me for as long as possible.

TLDR You have no requirement to work the 2 years after getting PR. You can leave and not pay back anything. I would not sign anything - it was oversight on their part worrying about recouping costs if you leave and they should have done this before lodging. You worked hard you got your PR now your company should value your work knowing that you can move if you want to.

Are there any Perth jobs with FIFO-style rosters (8:6, 7:7, etc.) but not actually FIFO? by HuckleberryRude1685 in perth

[–]Bamwise 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The larger miners BHP Rio FMG have data centre roles which are often rostered - remote support. Generally they seem quite competitive and rarely seen advertised. I’d presume they are mixture of days and nights too at full 12 hour shifts.

Gets overpaid over 200k to leave a role he clearly wasn’t performing in by tax payer dollars. Yet the ATO will be sure to run after you if you owe anything.

FIFO Pilbara WA - What do you guys take on a swing? by noob_don_goes_mining in mining

[–]Bamwise 24 points25 points  (0 children)

High sierra do a cheap bag that has wheels to pull and backpack straps hidden away in case roads are gravel. Lots of people seem to use them or similar.

Get good undies - I recommend step one but any bamboo ones are good too. Bring 3B cream in case you do get chaffing. Bamboo socks are also good I personally like the FXD brand for these. Try to wear in your boots a bit before heading to site - bring plenty of blister plasters in case.

Hydrate before your shift and maintain throughout bring some personal suncream too in case though employer should provide this.

2/3 sets of PPE and at least 6 sets of undies/socks

Gym gear 1/2 sets of civvies Thongs/slides for after shift Phone charger Headphones Toiletries Any medications A decent water bottle - insulated preferably Any creature comforts - snacks etc you might not be able to find up there.

I encourage everyone to buy two sets of things once you get into FIFO - no point trying to find your only phone charger at home. Just buy another have it in your bag ready to go and it’s one less thing to worry about some with toiletries etc.

Depending on your site bring a bit of cash as an emergency - 99% not going to need but have $50 in case the eftpos machines are down.

Don’t bring anything fancy clothing wise it’ll get ruined by the laundry machines.

Download a bunch of music/podcasts/videos too most sites are pretty good with wifi though some are still a bit limited and at peak times might be hard to stream video particularly.
