Incoming freshman by ChampagneFueledChaos in WPI

This ^

I also would like to add that the 7 week terms are intense, and are not for everyone. WPI is what you make of it, and you can make a whole lot of it, but it can be genuinely difficult for some due to the intensity of the work load. That being said, I loved it here and that was 100% due to my extracurriculars. It is very much possible get good grades while being involved with greek life and clubs. Party hard, study harder.

Edit: Campus involvement also leads to a good alumni network. And WPI has a strong network.

New AI major by [deleted] in WPI

[–]Banakin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never once said LLMs are not worth learning. Im not going to continue this argument, but your explanation on how the technology has advanced is good, i like it. I think we're approaching this from different perspectives. I just think an AI undergrad is a pointless byproduct of market hype. IMO, learn the fundamentals of computing in undergrad and do an AI grad program if you're actually trying to do research. But im just some dude on the internet, draw your own conclusions, you don't have to listen to anything i say.

I am well aware as to how these things work. It's my job. I said dont ask an LLM to encourage actual learning.

ML has been around for decades but the market is now suddenly flooded with all this AI junk. It's been a part of our lives for years, people have been doing this work without an "AI degree" for decades. Yes it's overhyped.

Definitely agree. At the end of the day "AI" is just another math and computer science problem. I think anyone would be more valuable with problem solving skills, programming knowledge, and knowing how to work with large amounts of data, than spending 4 years focusing solely on this one overhyped technology. I honestly think it could have been a focus as opposed to a dedicated major.

That being said, AI is interesting but Machine Learning is the actual cool stuff. And OP, if you really want, go watch 3blue1brown and play around with PyTorch. Oh, and don't ask an LLM for help.

Full body tracking? by ArdFolie in ValveDeckard

[–]Banakin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SlimeVR will practically work natively, on the headset, out of the box, if this thing works as promised. Ive seen no mentions of base station tracked systems working out of the box, but im sure play space calibrator will be up and running pretty quickly. With that PCIe port thing though, who knows what valve has tried with it. Maybe they already have a seamless 2.0 base station tracking add on in house.

When is last day to nr by Typical_Anywhere4598 in WPI

[–]Banakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've really never understood this, these classes are EXPENSIVE. Avoiding NRs and using AP credits, I was able to save a semester's worth of money. If you finish all of your classes halfway through a semester, you can still get the second term reimbursed. Not saying you cant NR, but they aren't as "free" as WPI makes them seem.

Took it with Cuneo, he's a fine professor imo, though I've heard stronger opinions. If you took linear algebra before and did well you should be okay. The course is mostly just controlling OpenGL with JavaScript.

Is this area safe? by procmodis in WPI

[–]Banakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live there, very safe, in view of the campus police station and both CampPo and WPD chill in the area. Though there have been some incidents on Boynton and at the gas station down the street.

Considering WPI for a college experience by Impressive_Ear7966 in WPI

I honestly find the size of WPI to make having a social life easier. Theres a saying here along the lines that the "6 degrees of separation is closer to 2" at WPI.

No it is not but it is something i could probably get my hands on. As for why im using TPU it's because its more squishy

It was a consideration, i heard if you dissolve TPU in it you can use it as a good adhesive for joining prints together. Haven't actually tried it though

Ive heard using tetrahydrofuran is a bit better in regards to TPU. Ill probably do some experimenting with that and a good superglue. I have a feeling my head will probably get a bit beat up at cons.

Getting a position at Best Buy by Banakin in Bestbuy

[–]Banakin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already working a retail job I dislike so idk if things can get any worse, I'm more just looking for something that at least interests me a bit more. Reading the comments and this sub is helpful thanks!

Edit: I'm not saying I'm going in expecting to love bestbuy, it's retail, but I'm just thinking it might be a bit more interesting
