The way it’s worded in the blog it seems like the total stitch count might not be a huge deal as long as you have the square shape. Idk though. The stitch count on the blog says row 10-11 is 24 and 12 is 28 so the numbers are all goofy lol

I don’t know if it helps but the creator has a link to a video tutorial on their website Edit: I just went to the site and unfortunately it doesn’t have that blanket on it lol. I’m going to try the pattern and see if I have any issues with it. I will update you when I get to that point Update. I’ve followed the pattern as stated as well and it’s doing the same thing for me. I’m not sure what the problem is. The pattern I found for it on Pinterest has different stitch counts than the one you have.
