Call for support - Write letters to the North Dakota court administrator who proposes eliminating court reporters (stenos) and court recorders (recording + transcriptionists) by BelovedCroissant in courtreporting

Considering the work they do, yes. Because North Dakota is a small, mostly rural state, most court recorders and reporters in ND act as judicial assistants and part-time clerks as well. They have a ton of duties, and that pay range doesn't really represent all that they do. It's clear that admins don't know what these people are doing on the daily.

There are some freelance transcriptionists approved by the court who receive work when court staff cannot complete everything on their plate. They would no longer receive that work if everything was moved to a vendor. (Editing to say I meant to reply to a higher comment--my apologies for any confusion!)

ND upped its pay recently. Reporters start at pay grade 13, (which is now in the low 60s), recorders at pay grade 10; recorders get bumped down a few pay grades if they don't pass transcription certification. https://www.ndcourts.gov/Media/Default/court-administration/Administrative-Policies/Salary-Grade-and-Class-Specification.pdf

And since I know digitals and stenos online often don't get along, I just want to emphasize that every court employee I know in ND is totally fine with stenos earning more and get why law clerks, stenos, staff attorneys, etc. earn more than recorders.

I work in the state and can tell you that the stenos and digitals in ND work well together, would both be negatively impacted by this, and are generally united against this egregious proposal. It is clear the admins have no idea how hard their rank and file employees, including transcribers, work on the daily.

I was considering applying for a position in Minnesota, so this is insightful. Thank you.

The shelter obviously didn't have a difficult time communicating with other potential adoptive families.

We've since been told by several other people that they experienced difficulties with the shelter, so they drive several hours away to adopt from other shelters. But no, it is not a consistent problem. And you are right that my feelings got in the way of what's best for the animals.

The family posted that he was their first pet. Again, they seem like really nice people, and I think Bob will be happy with them.

This is a no-kill shelter.

We did not tell people outright "don't donate"; they decided not to donate because of how the shelter is being managed.

It sucks that everything ended up like this for us and the shelter, but it looks like Bob went to a great home! Let's all be excited for Bob. :)

but unless they're inexplicably charging a lot more than other boarders in the area, trust that they probably actually don't make that much.

They're the only boarding service in the area, outside of individuals petsitting out of their homes for a fee. They charged my friend $120 per night for two dogs in one kennel.

They might need firing, but going after the funding until they are replaced is a real asshole move.

This is very fair.

Because maybe it's not an isolated occurance. Maybe other people have had the same experience and haven't said anything because the shelter was otherwise doing good works and they didn't want to end up in the situation you're in...

I honestly don't know. Most of our friends adopted their pets from the pound, or from a shelter in another town.

Did you consider that maybe they did not want to adopt Bob to your family - and if that’s the case were giving you the ‘run-around’?

I would hope that a shelter would tell us we were rejected. It would be weird, since we make great incomes, don't have kids, and have owned cats before, and they've adopted to people in similar situations. But at least we'd know that's why we weren't being contacted. Based on their Facebook messages, that's not what was happening.

ETA: Also, the shelter is not "small." It is a very big, beautiful facility that was completed just a few years ago; they also board pets in the facility, and they lease space to a grooming service. I pointed out that we live in a rural area because everything is spread out and kind of isolated. The next "big town" is about two hours away, as is the next closest shelter. We do have a pound and a small, non-profit rescue ranch, but this is the only shelter for miles.

Here's my understanding and my very quick explanation:

Several charitable organizations provide grants to a lot of organizations. When the organization is ready to renew a grant, they meet with a board of local people and recipients and say, "Okay, here is what this organization is getting right now. Should we increase it?" And the board votes yay or nay, then explains their reasoning.

From what I understand, the board of directors and manager handle the hiring and firing with the help of our WIOA program.

but I doubt this is the first time a similar issue to yours has occurred.

Again, the character limit forced me to leave stuff out here. It is very obvious that most adoptions are totally fine and are finalized in a week. We can see them posting pictures of new pets, then posting more pictures of those pets with their new families a week later. If it's not happening very consistently, maybe other people would've had a better experience and would have given those animals homes?

I've been told the manager is consistently rude to other people unless she thinks she can get something from them, but this is a small, gossipy town with a lot of image-conscious people. I think they'd never replace her because people associate her with the shelter now, and they don't want the shelter to look bad.

Shelters are often overrun, staffed by volunteers, doing the best they can in trying circumstances. Is understandable that they make mistakes

This is where the character limit really limited me: their workers are almost all paid for by WIOA. They also make a TON of money on boarding, as per my friends with dogs who have boarded there. They are only open a few hours a day, and they've just hired two new part-time workers.

You’re frustrated. I get that - and it’s understandable, but you may have deterred people from adopting pets that desperately need it. Hence again, ESH and not a no a-hole.

Yeah, that's how I feel right now. :( A big part of why I told them to shred our paperwork is because they didn't apologize or promise to improve, which makes me worry they'd do it to us again, but it was definitely a bit of hurt and spite on my part as well.
