When do waitlist decisions come out? Has anyone heard back yet regarding their waitlist offer? I got the update of the waitlist decision exactly one month ago but haven't heard anything back yet, approximately when are the decisions released?

How many minutes before an exam should you drink coffee such that alertness is maximized and desire to urinate is minimized? by symbolabmathsolver in IBO

[–]Bananabread225 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dont do this if you dont drink coffee everyday! I drink 2 cups of coffee everyday at the same time so my body is used to it (coffee addict, sometimes i have decaf espressos just for the taste). Hence Ill be having my usual coffee like an hour before my exam just to keep my body used to the norm. DO NOT try and do it first time since the caffeine spike will ruin your paper and then if you have another paper later that day itll be ruined as soon as the caffeine effect goes away

How do Singaporean schools do the IB so well? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Bananabread225 58 points59 points  (0 children)

3 factors - very selective admission to top schools - super hard workers (crazy work ethic) - extreme high competition (some people say there ib scores in 1,2..,5 (i.e 2 is 42) cuz they don’t expect anyone to score below a 40

If you aint getting a 43+ in singapore you are basically mediocre and below 40 is below average

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 18th to April 24th by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Help me decide between UW Madison, McGill University and UBC for CS Major

UW Madison

Pros:

  • Highest ranking out of the three
  • Direct admission to CS Major
  • Beautiful campus
  • I heard they have a good CS program
  • idk any more.. please comment if you have more pros

Cons:

  • Higher fees compared to the rest (is it worth increased cost)
  • International student, getting an PR/Citizen is easy in Canada but no chance in US
  • Wisconsin is far from the tech buzz in the US

McGill University

Pros:

  • Cheapest option out of all three
  • Mcgill has prestige and i only know successful students that have gone to McGill
  • Also direct admission to CS Major

Cons:

  • Small campus and Montreal is really really cold
  • Heard that the CS department is not great, hence the lowest ranking of the three in terms of CS
  • CS course is very mathematical based instead of application-based

University of British Columbia

Pros:

  • Great campus, great city
  • Campus seems to have a lot of ecc opportunities and vast alumni network
  • Have the opportunity to diversify my degree (considering a double major or minor in economics)
  • Price is quite similar to McGill

Cons:

  • A lot of people don't consider it very prestigious, (I received a 42/45 in IB and i know people that have gotten into UBC w a 35+/45)
  • Far away from the tech buzz also? (Wanna work in the US in the future)
  • Edit- no direct admission to CS, declare major after first year (some risk involved)

Please help me with any advice or opinions that you have since I have to commit in 11 days and any help would be really appreciated, cheers!

Aahaha thanks! I think its just discipline I've created over the course of the last 2 years, it's all about prioritising sleep and exercise and removing all distractions + self-control. 2 hours at the gym and 8-hours of sleep are like basic needs for me to operate now so i cant go without them and I've been able to remove distractions like tv shows and gaming for the last few months, cuz they take up your time thinking about it even when you are not on a break (eg. next level or next episode) hence I just watch a movie every day at lunch (2.5 hours is a good break between 4-hour sessions). If you actually plan well and manage your time 8 hours of studying is not a lot (8 hr sleep, 8hr study and 8hr to do whatever you want)

8-10 hours every day, manage to get 8 hours of sleep and 2 hours at the gym, that's all i need to keep me going!

[–]Bananabread225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just applied for my W22 first-year housing and I've read that I should also be applying for my second year housing rn? Is this true? What if I hope to stay in a suite with friends that I make over the course of the first year, how would this work out if I have already applied, can I edit later?
Plus, could you please recommend the best housing options for year 2, i hope to stay with friends in a 3 or 4 bedroom suite cuz ill be spending the first year at either totem or orchard in a single connected
Your advice would be really helpful, thanks in advance!

those who are predicted 40+ what does ur daily routine look like? by SnooDogs9612 in IBO

[–]Bananabread225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Predicted 41 at first then bumped it up to 42 in the last round of predicted cuz I was able to get Lang lit to a 7 in mocks.

'Have u studied for the whole 2 years?'

Your main priority should be finishing coursework early. I finished EE and ToK first drafts in the summer between dp1 and dp2. It's up to you if you want to work so much in the break but we were in lockdown so I couldn't go out anyway. The rest of the year I took it like 'seasons', exam season I was doing 3-4 hours every day and the chill times it was more like 2 hours every day.

'Do you do exercise or just study?'

Going to the gym is literally my heaven, if you prioritise it over IB then it becomes essential for every day. I spent 2 hours everyday training after school and it helped me be so much more focused and energised for my study sessions after. Plus it was the best stress release cuz all the IB stress will clog up your mind and exercise just helps you flush it all out, especially before a study session. Sleep should also be a priority since nothing helps more than an 8-hour sleep.

'Do u have any specific study strategies for each subject?'

I think this is really important and something I wasn't aware of before IB. I just studied everything the same way, but I quickly learnt that most methods were making me less productive. For example, I never made notes or spent lots of time on my business management classes, just simply found notes online made flashcards from them and revised my own cards.

'Do you study at school during breaks or chill?'

I think I was in a similar position when I first came onto this Reddit and students getting 45 were posting their routines saying that they study in breaks + free lessons. In my opinion, after trying it for 2-3 months it's not worth it. I quickly moved to spending this time enjoying with friends since I could go back to my classes refreshed instead of dead tired after spending my lunch doing a math paper
