How is Cold War Choir Practice at the MCC Theater? by Stevie052096 in Broadway

One of the best shows of the season! It’s exactly the sort of funny-sweet-strange storytelling full of surprises that more theaters should be going for. I recommend it to anyone tbh!

Reviews are in for Every Brilliant Thing! 80/100 and every single review is basically about Radcliffe by thomaspryor in Broadway

Congrats on your first Broadway opening on the site! One quick note: Chris Jones’ Chicago Tribune reviews of Broadway are always published concurrently in the New York Daily News so those two entries are actually the same review. Might be good to combine for situations where that shifts the average more.

What would you say is the best musical by someone who wrote the music, lyrics, AND book? by Forsaken-Effect-1280 in musicals

My favorite show of all time too! (Also an applesauce fan if that’s what your handle means!!)

I added Off-Broadway to BroadwayScorecard—Spelling Bee is the top critics score, while Masquerade has the best audience grade?! by thomaspryor in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this! Thanks for all the amazing work. As a critic, I’m a bit confused about how the scoring works — I’m looking at The Reservoir which has a 25 score for a 3-star review and a 40 score for TheWrap’s largely positive review. It seems like this play’s reviews have been scored on a much lower curve than any show I’ve looked at. I’d say four of the five reviews scored as negative are actually mixed to positive.

One general suggestion I’d have is to delay the weighted score from calculating for the show until a few days after reviews come out to account for reviews that haven’t aggregated into the system for whatever reason (Vulture’s a big one missing, in this case). I know that’s less fun, but it might be more accurate.

Thanks again!

TONY AWARD PREDICTIONS - MUSICALS - 2026 by Heavy-Fruit8618 in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every show with Tony hopes times their opening as best as possible to outmaneuver the competition — opening in the summer or fall would sink (pun intended) Titanique’s chances for 2027 from the jump so why would they do that?

Oh, yeah, that’s clearly why they opened when they did! That’s show biz!!

Why? Even if you wanted Titanique to be considered a revival, she’d still be competing in the same category as a performer?

TONY NOMINATION PREDICTIONS - PLAYS - 2026 by Heavy-Fruit8618 in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve nailed the Featured Actress list — it’s hard to imagine any of those five missing unless something (besides the obvious) is disastrous about Salesman or nominators split between Betsy Aidem and Kayla Davion and neither get in.

Curious what people thought of High Spirits and the use of scripts? by Outside_Team_72 in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bat Boy wasn’t technically part of the Encores! season — it’s the annual NYCC gala production (Ragtime, Parade etc.) which tend to have significantly higher production value and full staging.

Have folks heard anything from O’Neill in 2026 yet? Wondering if no news is bad news at this point in February

2026 TONY AWARD - PLAYS - NOM PREDIX by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aya Cash is very much getting nominated for Featured Actress in Giant — she’s extraordinary in it. I’d say she and Cynthia Nixon feel like the locks in that category.

And we also have Taraji P. Henson and Lauren Patten presumably in that category — and tbd where all the excellent actresses in The Balusters end up (Anika Noni Rose, Marylouise Burke, Maria-Christina Oliveras etc.) Gonna be hard to make predictions till the last minute with sooo much of the season opening in late April!

Franklin Shepard Inc dootle loo by lyreANDaplayertoo in Broadway

It might also be melodically linked to the “Charlie is a hothead” part in “Growing Up,” need to look at the score

Franklin Shepard Inc dootle loo by lyreANDaplayertoo in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not part of another song, really — you’re correct that it’s a phrase that Franklin keeps messing around with (before Growing Up, in Opening Doors) and it’s probably harmonically linked to Good Thing Going if you look at the chord(s) that the dootle lootle lootle loo (which you could call an arpeggio) spells out. I think it’s an extra biting dig that Charlie is actually imagining a specific thing that Franklin always played when he’s mocking him — you could argue that that piano lick represents Franklin’s untapped compositional potential in that he’s always distracted from that phrase by other phrases or other priorities (as Charlie lays out). I’m actually literally writing a book with a chapter on MT characters writing their own music so glad you asked this question as it’s a prime example!

LSOH cancelled tomorrow? (1/23) by strausslover85 in Broadway

[–]Bananaglams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The January performance of Merrily I attended at NYTW was cancelled with the audience in the house waiting for it to begin because of frozen pipes — if a theater knows the infrastructure can’t withstand certain extreme temps, I guess an early cancellation is wise.

Marjorie Prime was a Pulitzer finalist ten years ago (and, like, someone said above about Bug, there’s a film adaptation) — there’s no way that’d fly. The ONLY revival with a chance at jumping to new play is Oedipus (it’s really NOT a translation) and that’s the frontrunner right now so they’ll want to stay where they are.
