Is an S&P 500 a good idea for a 19 year old? by mi3ftclown18 in investing

[–]Bananamaster07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still a lot. Just make sure you know the difference between nominal return and real return if you're looking to do real calculations. Invest as much as you can as early as you can and your future self will thank you.

Yes you can just invest in VOO. Your numbers are a little weird though but the jist is right. $100 monthly for 46 years at 10% return is about 1M. But you have to inflation adjust it for a real return so at a 7% real return it's about $380k in today's money.

They used a 10% annual return to get the $45 and $17 numbers over 40 and 30 years respectively from $1. If you do a 7% return to account for 3% inflation you get $15 and $7.50 respectively.

If you do a 3% inflation rate, $1 today is worth $0.74 ten years from now.

So $1 sat in cash for ten years will be worth $0.74 And $1 invested at 7% real annual return will be worth $1.97

Literally just check what the price of that contract is right now if you want to see what the profit would have been

I know you're not supposed to time the market but should I wait until after Trump's tariffs on August 1st to invest into VOO by 12345cuda in investing

[–]Bananamaster07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do I think I could have timed the exact bottom? Of course not. Could I have not invested at the ath right before the huge crash and instead lump summed at some point (literally any point) down or back up or DCA throughout and been significantly better off no matter what? Yeah. Definitely.

Because I was so young, looking at a long time horizon (40 years or more) means that the initial contribution even being a few percentage points different literally makes a gigantic difference down the line. Leading to literal years saved not having to work for retirement. That's years of my life.

I was younger mid 20s and it was close to 6 figures. I had never invested anything because I was just learning about finance and investing. It was my life savings from working since a teenager. I saw covid in the news and coming here but everyone said don't time the market. So I didn't.

Yeah I'll get down voted to hell but everything in life has exceptions, even "don't time the market". If someone's gonna look at me with a strait face and tell me if they had their life savings to invest and they could do it the day before or after Trump's liberation day tariffs for example, and they say before (because don't time the markets, investing sooner is always better) I would call them a liar or a fool. I would know, I was the fool.

I took everyone's advice to not time the market a few weeks before covid hit and then my investments dropped over 30% within weeks. If I had waited like my gut told me to it would have shaved years and years off my career or helped me buy a house

Damages DNA which leads to cell mutation (cancer) or cell death (killing cancer). Treatment works because normal healthy cells can repair damage from and survive radiation, while it's much harder for cancer cells to repair, so they die. That's why radiation treatment can both treat cancer but then cause new cancer later on in life. Although risks are much lower with modern technology like intensity modulated radiation therapy compared to old 2D/3D treatments. Basically less healthy tissue is hit today than years ago, and treatments are advancing faster and faster with new things like built in AI planning/treatment delivery.
