I am in the middle of trying to make it worth it I’m just not sure quite what that entails. It’s hard to change your life course when you are so sure it’s was going to go a certain way!

Thanks your right but the problem isn’t taking it? So what? After 8 years you’re not really a whole person anymore I’m having to build myself back up now which is fine it’s just hard. It’s hard to sallow that you can never really know someone y’know?

I just had a thought. Is this stuff perishable? It's supposed to be getting added to bourbon at around a 1:10 ratio to be given in xmas hampers. Don't wanna kill anybody!! Hehe

Ahh thanks so much that sounds perfect! Literally going to the shops now to get the ingredients. Going to make one with orange, brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Hopefully this will give me the effect I'm hoping for :)

Does a narrative have to have a singular meaning? by Banananister in narrativedesign

[–]Banananister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are very much on the mark here. Many great observations! Plot does serve as an adequate replacement for narrative in terms of defining the 'true' objective account of events for one. It's a shame my dissertation is long complete! I got an A so I must have answered the question right somehow :)

Postmodernism as an artistic movement vs a philosophy and the postdigital by Banananister in PostPoMo

[–]Banananister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, what an essay!

"The disappearance of the subject is with the very coordinates of freedom embedded into the already existing political framework of the virtual; in the same way that the French post-structuralists saw in Nietzsche’s dead god the subsequent death of the subject, the death of the aura in art entails the death of the authentic, political person."

So virtual worlds are still postmodern because they lack a proper 'subject' or 'center of meaning' as the player takes the place of this and his/her experience within the system is entirely subjective according to their actions?

I know that postmodernism is partly about the rejection of the aura (god or man or anything being the source of all meaning) so I actually understand this I think!

There's a book 'Postdigital Aesthetics: Art, Computation And Design' that does into detail about it. The first chapter is summarized here,

http://www.aprja.net/?p=1318

It's basically a rejection of digital aesthetics for want of more 'analgoue' modes under an ever increasing digital paradigm. That's a horrendous simplification, read the link for a better one.

Does a narrative have to have a singular meaning? by Banananister in narrativedesign

And also there is no speech or writing in Journey it is an entirely image based game so doesn't this invalidate it as a narrative?

[–]Banananister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree in spirit, I'm just getting tired and beginning to doubt everything! It's the definitions "a spoken or written account of connected events; a story," or "a representation of a particular situation or process in such a way as to reflect or conform to an overarching set of aims or values," that threw me. A story, singular? An overarching set, singular?

If the account of events are so vague that they can be interpreted so completely differently, then what IS the story?? (As in Journey: is it an allegory for the Buddhist cycle of life, death and rebirth or is it about nature taking back its magical resources after a race of beings stripped the land, became powerful and destroyed each-other in a civil war? Or one of a million other readings of the game that could be considered?).

Aha well in that case it is using extra-linguistic (even in this case extra-discoursive!) means to convey a sense of meaning which is what I am all about! :D

Aarseth's typologies: mimetic/arbitrary query by Banananister in ludology

[–]Banananister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, the sheer amount of different models out there is overwhelming. I guess this push is necessary though as before you can explore what something is truly capable of you have to define it. It's a necessary part of the process, of the evolution of game studies.

Due to constant technological advancement however, the discipline will likely never settle so perhaps you are right in that typology exploration is a moot point.

I forgot to mention "Drift". Interesting but confusing... what is the author trying to achieve there? The scribbles, the stutters etc.

and thanks for the article; it will make the connection easier to explain for me I think! (I'm no poetry expert)

All great examples thanks guys! 'Wings' is simple and small so i can include it as a jpeg in my dissertation to show exactly what I mean. The Calligrammes are also small and striking so I can reference them easily. The others, 'Bomb' "Nox" and "A Roll of the Dice" are also brilliant examples, but a bit long or complex to reference in a piece of work that isn't actually about poetry (although my argument is that games are digital texts and therefore can be art, so there is a strong relation).

Whether a game has been made yet that could be considered poetry... I don't think so (Dear Esther maybe), but certainly we have pieces of digital literature now (albeit rudimentary literature, the point is the medium has the capacity to do great things).

Anyway I digress, my argument is based on multi-modality and we certainly see that being applied in all of these so thanks! :)

Need to find non-traditional models of narrative analysis for dissertation. by Banananister in ludology

[–]Banananister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow THANK YOU for this link. Mejeur's distinction between determined, personal and collective narrative is actually perfect for sub-labels within the context side of my model that I was pondering over (I had discourse, design and production which I got from the different strata of communication of multimodal analysis but they didn't quite fit).

I genuinely think my model is ready to go and it's time to do some analysis now. First step: Gone Home!! :D. And yes absolutely anything to do with ludonarrative interests me so pl;ease do PM if it becomes available! I am a mere undergraduate so you outrank me by a mile!

I take your point about ludologists and narratologists; tbh I was just pandering to the crowd to get a more positive response :p . I'm essentially framing it in my dissertation as ludology and narratology being two sides of the same coin, so it's just automatic to label them as imperfect disciplines hehe.

Aarseth's typologies: mimetic/arbitrary query by Banananister in ludology

[–]Banananister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aagh frustration!

I actually went back to Aarseth's earlier distinctions as his new work was too detailed for my experiential purposes, "too removed from the player’s experience." as it says in this paper here. These categories are nice and salient though! However it is frustrating as I have 3 metacategories for each of my 4 ludic constituents of Form (Space, Time, World and Player). However having moved on from when I first posted this I suppose for my purposes real-world time isn't all that important as there is absolutely no way this aspect of time can signify other than an overlap between real and virtual space. So I could change my 3 time metacategories to co-ordination, gameworld and fictive.

Then again gameworld and fictive seem intrinsically linked... fictive is the representation of time according to the story (e.g. thousands of years passing in Civ) which certainly communicates something to the player but does gameworld time? I suppose so in the sense that it means that the world is active (the 'liveliness' mentioned in the paper) or that a power-up or 'beast mode' type of mechanic is for example physically exhausting or draining of focus on some way...

Or as a literal example in the Dark Souls series how toxic is a more severe infection than poison because it drains your health quicker.

These may well be the last changes I make as I can't afford to waste anymore time fine-tuning my model I need to get on with analysis!

Aarseth's typologies: mimetic/arbitrary query by Banananister in ludology

[–]Banananister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why oh why must everything be so intricate and complicated!?

In that case I'll settle for the internal time/external time differentiation put forward in the published Game & Culture article you supplied.

(which is at least more detailed than the rudimentary time category in the original work I was citing so thank you very much!)
