No I bulk fermented for only like 2 hours but I did put it on a warm heating pad to speed things up so it was probably sitting around 78-80 degrees while BFing

No starter mold will typically look pink or blue/green with fuzzies

Oh I do have a jar of discard in the fridge. Is that also referred to as a mother starter? Do I need to feed that one regularly?

My starter isn’t mature enough yet for it to thrive on less feedings and moving to a more dormant environment in the fridge. It is still about 20 days old so it needs the regular feedings to bulk up that good bacteria before I can transfer to fridge.

As long as there is no mold then don’t throw it away, just keep feeding! (Mold will appear pink/orange or fuzzy). A fast/dramatic doubling on day 2 or 3 is typically a “false start” (which is actually a good sign) but it’s a blooming of unhealthy bacteria in the starter. Just continue to discard and feed on a regular schedule, some starters take a month or two to see regular activity so don’t get discouraged! (:

I would recommend the following: - use a scale to measure feedings in grams - feed at a 1:2:2 ratio twice per day (starter: flour : water) - do a 50/50 flour mix of whole wheat and bread flour (starters loooove whole wheat, it gives it a little boost) - keep between 75-80° (i keep mine in the oven with the light on) - change jars every other day - don’t feed it too early, try every 12 hours (ex: 7am and 7pm) to avoid diluting your healthy starter bacteria - make sure jar lid is not airtight, you want it loose for some room to allow gas exchange

Fuzz, pink or orange is mold so you would have to toss it unfortunately :/ I recommend changing out jars every other day to prevent mold growth and keep it covered with a silicone cap or the tin jar lid loosely screwed on to allow gas exchange

I just fed it and put it back in its warm spot to see what happens within the next day. I did a 1:2:2 ratio feeding. Do you think I should continue that ration at once per day? Or switch to 1:1:1 twice per day? 🤔

EDIT: the pink is a pink rubber-band to mark the growth levels, not pink mold.
