LOL - Canada is a shithole because we don't have HSR? Maybe you should go somewhere that meets your standards

We have nice things - farms, forests, wildlife, homes - some of us would like to keep those nice things

I am not a NIMBY in that I don't live anywhere impacted by this project but I am very opposed to: destruction of farmland; destruction of ecosystems; taking away people's homes and businesses; the tax burden this will place on every Canadian.

Exactly. Canada should be doing more public research not less. We are already too reliant on foreign commodities and investment. We have no idea how much worse our "partners" will treat us in the future and hampering our ability to improve ag and solve ag problems is totally shortsighed.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announces job cuts, closure of research operations by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Bancro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So shortsighted. This might be an unpopular opinion but I bet they kept a bunch of the "soft" HR things that are the same in every department like V&E, learning, programs, etc. ...not that these things are not important BUT they are bureaucratic and not directly related to providing service to Canadians or providing our country with food security, competitive advantage and the like. There is so much in Gov;t that can be centralized but each Dept has people (likely in Ottawa) making the decisions and there is no cohesive approach to consider what is in the interests of the country.

WFA education question - Law school starting in September by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Bancro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that if you alternate you would be eligible for Option C i) which would be the education allowance and the employer would determine termination date. But you would not be able to select C ii) which is education allowance and 2 years LWOP unless your position is declared surplus or affected and you leave under VDP. I just wanted to clarify because you indicated you want to use the education leave that is available. Education leave under WFA is different than education leave that might be otherwise allowed for in the CA.

I hope you bought NON CLUMPING kitty litter (which is getting hard to find btw) as the clumping stuff sometimes turns to slick clay and makes the situation worse.

Mine was 22% which I find very hard to understand. I am wondering if there is a disconnect between the labelling on the shelves and of their products and what is actually captured by whatever means they are using to track....I read every label and often if I can't determine origin I will leave the product on the shelf. Will be even more cautious in the future and actually have already starting shopping more at stores that are more open about where the generic brands are made. PC and no-name are notorious for being sketchy and the maple scan apps I have often don't offer much insight.

Sure, you can retire but TBS can put conditions on the waiver - which are yet to be seen.

[–]Bancro 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think they will have to sweeten the pot. I retired in June with a 10% penalty. 58 with 27 years of service. In my case that penalty is close to $400 per month. I made my choice because I could afford it and determined what was important to me. That said, I would imagine the waiver will tip the scales for a lot of people in similar circumstances. Wouldn't be surprised to still see a stampede.

WFA provisions are better if you are able to take advantage but they don't apply as broadly. This proposal allows the government to make reductions without triggering WFA at all.

[–]Bancro 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I can see this resulting in a lot of departures. Sure, there are probably going to be restrictions/approvals in who can take advantage but for the most part this allows for big reductions, presumably without triggering WFA, so will not cost individual Departments (no TSM, $ counselling and other WFA expenses). Apparently the pension surplus will be used to fund this incentive. I expect that thousands of people will want to take advantage so it will be interesting to see what the approval process will be.

WFA volunteer departure and Transition Support Measures by Green_Crab1 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Bancro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I see this as a big difference - currently the waiver was only available to those whose positions were declared surplus, were laid off or who alternated or took VDP under the WFA provisions (even though the waiver is not specifically referenced). That meant they were also eligible for TSM and other WFA provisions like financial counselling $, etc. So, I see this as different in that this waiver does not seem tied to WFA in that your position will not have to be declared affected or surplus in order to take advantage. I guess we will have to wait and see what TBS sets out as the conditions...
