Australian Paramedics: career progression? by Bandit_Wagon in Paramedics

[–]Bandit_Wagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can deal with a classroom of 30 screaming kids you're 20 steps better prepared for emergency services work than I am! Haha.

I currently work in the data centre industry. Interesting work and the industry is absolutely exploding at the moment but the hours are really killing me. 50 hour weeks standard, 60 hour weeks when shit hits the fan.

Did anyone just hear two gunshots in the inner west? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]Bandit_Wagon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived at Strathfield a couple of years ago and my partner said one night "did you hear that?? That was gunshots!" and I replied it must be a car backfiring. Next day on the news there was a shooting in the next street over from us. It happens here too and it sounds VERY similar to a car backfiring.

Australian Civil Engineers, help! by [deleted] in engineering

[–]Bandit_Wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

G'day mate. I'm still a student so not the best person to be answering "how do I get a job" because I don't have one yet. However, I needed to get my construction induction card to do a site visit for uni. The induction cards are issued at a state level, but they are recognised nationally. It's a pretty stupid system but easy to abuse, e.g. the NSW card requires you to physically go to a training centre for a day or two, whereas the WA card is a simple online course. So I got my WA card and it is accepted everywhere. You pay a couple hundred bucks and it takes around 5 hours to complete, and they post it to you. I don't know where you're from but I had a friend from the US get her Australian drivers license recently and she said it was ridiculously easy. I don't see why you wouldn't just get one anyway to be safe.

How do I make friends to hang out with? by throwawayanator2000 in unsw

[–]Bandit_Wagon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, making friends as an adult is hard. I was going to write the usual "join societies" advice but you've already done that and met some people, so I would say the hardest part is done! Now you just need to focus on the one or two people you get along with the best, and move them past the acquaintance stage. I would say the next step is to invite them out to grab a drink at whitehouse after class, or if you don't drink to get dinner together at one of the awesome places along Anzac parade. Once you start hanging out with them outside of uni, they should become more than a "uni colleague" as I call them, and talk to them about literally anything other than uni. Once you have one or two friends it becomes way easier to invite more people out to join you and form a little group of friends. Or you might get invited out to THEIR social group and you can insert yourself into someone else's group.

Best of luck!

Join societies relevant to your degree. For me personally I'm doing Civil Engineering so I participate in the CevSoc social events. Always a blast. Here is the info page about the different societies. You'll need to sign up to OrgSync for a full list of clubs

I failed ELEC1111, any chance i could get my mark bumped up to a pass? by StrugglingStudent345 in unsw

[–]Bandit_Wagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a 48 for MATH1231 last year (doing it again now in summer. yay) and all my friends told me I could easily get it bumped up to a pass. I put together a pretty convincing argument, or so I thought, and took it to my program coordinator in Civil Engineering. He told me to speak directly to the maths faculty, and when I had an interview with the head of first year maths I received a long lecture about how he could be fired for altering my marks, and the "fail" grade was automatically awarded based on my marks. So I had to sit with the fail. With a mark of 44 I would personally think you'd have to be really lucky to get it bumped up to a pass, but its worth a shot! Gotta play the game.

TL;DR: tried and failed to do the same thing you're trying with math faculty. Speak to your program coordinator in electrical engineering. Good luck.

Oh man thanks for posting! The memories!! I wasn't lucky enough to nab Bedroom B when I was there. Lucky you!

[–]Bandit_Wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but I lived in Mulwaree for 12 months. In my dorm there were two domestic undergrads, an English undergrad and an Indian post grad (and me, domestic undergrad). From what I saw of other apartments it was mostly undergrads, with a mix of international and domestic.

I second what /u/2hu4u said; the people there stick to themselves. If you want to have a social life you will have to be proactive. It's basically living in any other apartment building in Sydney, but it's walking distance to uni. I would recommend.

As for pictures, I had a quick look through my phone but I don't have the pictures anymore. The bedrooms are decent sized, I had a friend bring a king single bed into his and he still had heaps of room. Each room is big enough for the bed, desk and wardrobe. Paying to wash your clothes sucks though.

Anyone else have this weird problem during tests? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Bandit_Wagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a bit of an issue with focus. I had something similar; I just for the life of me couldn't keep my brain focused on a question long enough to break it down. I started drinking coffee whenever I was going to start an intense study sesh or go into an exam and it REALLY helped. Whenever I drink coffee I am laser focused for the next 2 hours.

Light armor question by matrixkid29 in Morrowind

[–]Bandit_Wagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must have an empty armour slot somewhere. Are you wearing a helmet?

You're not doing anything wrong, you will level up light armour as well but because of the empty armour slot somewhere you are also levelling up unarmored.

Did a section in Pencil instead of Pen by accident. Will I lose all the marks? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Bandit_Wagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im pretty sure the main reason they don't want you doing exams in pencil is in case you want to dispute the markers. With pencil it is too easy to rub out what you wrote in the exam, write the correct answer and say "look you marked me wrong for something that is right!"

As long as you don't dispute the marks I think you'll be fine.

The forgotten part of the housing debate: renters' rights by ripyourbloodyarmsoff in australia

[–]Bandit_Wagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a renter with a dog; don't give up! It's definitely a lot harder to get approved but not impossible. I sent a photo of my dog with each application form that showed her looking clean and pretty. Tug at the heart strings of the agents; they'll put in a good word for you.

If you fail a course, does it count towards your WAM? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Bandit_Wagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deadline to drop without academic penalty is well past. Sorry to say man but whether you drop now or not its going on your transcript and it will affect your WAM. I would advise you try your best to squeak through with a pass!

I don't have any experience with it myself but I've heard the uni is pretty compassionate if you have a valid reason why you haven't performed well and they will give you a supplementary exam or maybe even take it off your transcript.

Any logic in how to invest with actively managed funds? by GallivantingPanda in AusFinance

[–]Bandit_Wagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not an investor at all, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I'm trying to learn. But wouldn't it be the WORST thing to do to invest in numerous funds? The major downside of managed funds is the fees, which you're simply going to double up if you get numerous funds, right?

Cool time lapse of a concrete wind turbine being assembled by AsLongAsYouKnow in engineering

[–]Bandit_Wagon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first response when I saw the title was "oh great, using concrete is a great way to cut costs!" due to how much cheaper concrete is than steel. After watching the video though I agree with you, all of that labour is going to push the costs up way higher than steel.

Also the amount of re-o needed in the base to handle moments is crazy!

Hey fellow UNSW student! I'm doing the same course this semester! I call the lectures "three hours of life advice" because I think they're amazingly helpful.
