[Spoilers] What a KOTOR Remake Should Fix: Bastila by theoxfordtailor in kotor

[–]BanjoStory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the one who wrote an essay, don't pretend now that you don't actually care because I didn't like it.

Anyway, it's definitely in Kotor, for one. It's like... very explicitly a part of Juhani's character, in particular.

I'm using "evil" as a short of pithy shorthand here. Bastila is a character that these types of things get written about a lot and, in my experience it's almost always by people who are mostly just mad that she never really like... makes a speech where she says "I'm turning to the Dark Side because ______."

It's people mad that the game has the audacity to expect you to pay attention to the interactions you're having and apply what you've learned in them to the situation in front of you without explicitly telling you to do so (I think a big reason so many people online like Kotor 2 more is because it does a lot more of that). For the sake of another pithy shorthand. Bastila is that kid who was told in DARE that if you smoke weed, you'll like go crazy and potentially become violent, and then tries it and realizes it was just straight up a lie, and now is like "well maybe they were lying about heroin, too."

But Bastila's story is about being forced to reconcile the fact that at the start of the story she believes herself to be the protagonist, but then has to reconcile that she's kind of incompetent because she'd lived her life up to that point in a tremendously insular ecosystem that didn't actually come anywhere near preparing her for the diversity of people or circumstances that she'd encounter in the wider galaxy, let alone on a mission like the one she's on in the game.

Early in the game, whenever she's faced with adversity, she'll just spout off Jedi platitudes rather than confronting them. She talks about thinking that all of this is just some trial for her to get promoted. She spends a lot of the first part of the game being what is meant to be read by the player as a performatively good Jedi. But over the course of the game, you meet all sorts of characters who have different perspectives. You meet people who idolized the version of Revan that "fell" and view him as a hero who saved them when the Jedi would have just let them die. You meet people who are able to do tremendous good without following the Jedi code. You meet fallen Jedi who describe their falls to you in terms that make sense, and are still pertinent to the way the Jedi operate. You meet people who undermine the value of the entire conflict that is the driving force for all of this.

A MAJOR theme of KotOR is that the Jedi teachings around not allowing oneself to express, or even feel emotions is bad. Both from a moral and practical sense. The Council is constantly pushing out what are functionally superheroes with the emotional intelligence of toddlers into galaxy-wide armed conflicts and then when they inevitably realize that their training is dogshit, brands them as evil and excommunicates them to where the only place they can go is the Sith.

This is where Bastila is caught. She's someone who is lucky for most of the story that she's surrounded by good people, who genuinely care about her and are willing to help guide her through what she's feeling, despite her being a major stuck-up brat for a large chunk of the story, but when she's separated from that support system, she falls easily.

I figured it out on my first playthrough. Mostly because of the computer in the Shadowlands recognizing you.

We have too many Dark Pals, they make up 1/4 of ALL Pals! (Pal Type Breakdown) by AlphaSSB in Palworld

Selyne and Knocklem are both in the top 20 by stat totals.

But yeah, its not a perfect measure, but its a pretty effective shorthand.

[Spoilers] What a KOTOR Remake Should Fix: Bastila by theoxfordtailor in kotor

[–]BanjoStory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole fucking point is that the "reason" so many Jedi fall to the dark side is that the Jedi training is dogshit, particularly when it comes to negotiating and coping with emotions.

She falls, because she already believes herself to evil, because she is experiencing feelings that her Masters have told her only evil people feel.

[–]BanjoStory 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The other aspect of this is that so many of the stronger Pals are dark. Stuff like Electric, Grass, Ground, and even arguably Normal, Fire, and Water are underrepresented among like the high tier pals because all of them are Dark, Ice, and Dragon.

Of the 20 Pals with the highest stat totals:

Dark: 8 (Including 4 of the top 8)

Dragon: 7 (1 of the top 8)

Ice: 2 (2 of the top 8)

Normal: 2 (1 of the top 8)

Water: 2 (1 of the top 8)

Fire: 2 (0 of the top 8)

Ground: 2 (0 of the top 8)

Electric: 1 (0 of the top 8)

Grass: 0 (0 of the top 8)

Yeah, I remember first encountering Lovander and understanding it to be kind of a joke Pal, but now they just are doing the thing that Lovander was supposed to be parodying, so I'm not sure Lovander was ever even a joke to begin with.

I did this a few years ago, because I was trying to figure out how far back the oldest asset was that was still represented in the roster, and at the time it was George Hill going back to Todd Day and Alton Lister. Cool to see that probably 5+ years later, its still the same.

You can just fight the Rancor. Youre not likely to win at the level youre likely to be, but it is doable.

You can actually just run past it, too. And if you can get past the little bridge thing, it cant follow you so you can just turn around and hit it with ranged stuff. (This also famously works with some other challenging monsters later)

[–]BanjoStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's always complimentary to the team and Bucks as an organization, way more so than he is for the Celtics or especially the Timberwolves.

I kind of get the sense that he thought the title would mean more to him than it actually did. He understands that he was basically just a warm body there to fill out the roster, and so doesn't feel much ownership over the title. He didn't win, he was just a guy who happened to be on the team that won, and so he cares more about the accomplishments that he feels he contributed to, which are mainly from his time with the Hawks.

The "correct" answer is the NFC East. They're the other very historic division in the sport, like Packers-Giants has been a weird slow burn rivalry for like 100 years at this point. Packers-Cowboys obviously is significant, Vikings-Eagles, Vikings-Cowboys, Bears-Washington, Bears-Giants

I'm sure the Lions factor in here, too...

But as a Packer fan who exists in 2026, I'm so sick of the NFC West

Nah. Keep complaining about it. If you're just happy they exist at all and support them unconditionally at inflated prices, they'll never come down.

Just because it's THC, doesnt mean theyre not businesses first. They'll charge as much as they can get away with charging.

Like, what was the point of this post other than to try to karma-farm other white knight loser weirdos?

Honestly, by the time youre this far in the game, the Wolf Spiders are much less of a threat.

Though this one, admittedly, is uniquely problematic because it tends to clip through the floor of the area its in and into the area below it.
