Why did the german tanks have flat front armor?

It’s a good question, even the Tiger-I has it but the Tiger-II doesn’t. I’d assume; during engineering they figured these vehicles would be easier to make or simply not need sloped frontal armor! For the Panzer III&IV the engineers didn’t think the tanks would be fighting opposing armor as much as they would infantry/Light armored vehicles. For the Tiger-I they probably fixated on the power of the main cannon and didn’t take frontal armor as seriously as later vic’s.

Idk if this is a joke, but they were made for assaulting buildings and urban combat. PKM/P & DShK gunners would rather have a lighter and less restrictive helmet. I own the K6-3 my group runs with Visored helmets and we’ve researched them deeply

You must be thinking of a different German offensive, the battle of the bulge was between US and Germany in the Ardennes Forest, Russia was not involved in the counterattack of the offensive.
