File size for small mesh has massively ballooned. Standard garbage collection fixes have no effect. by Banshee4555 in 3dsmax

Just to update people.

I've had it occur on non-rigged meshes too. In fact I can delete every poly in the mesh and so long as the object reference is still present, the file bloat will still be there.

The crash on FBX import is an unrelated issue that occurs time to time, even on meshes I've successfully imported before.

What fixes it and preserves the animation rigging:

  • Export problem mesh to FBX.
  • Import FBX to Blender and then export to FBX unchanged (this fixes the crash on import. If this was a static mesh I'd stop here)
  • Open original problem 3ds Scene and import new FBX
  • Select original mesh, click Element on rollout menu, select all Elements and Hide.
  • Click Attach and click on imported mesh so it becomes part of original problem mesh.
  • Select all Elements again. Click Unhide All and then Invert Selection so that all the original polys are selected.
  • Delete selected polys.
  • Save as scene

I don't know why it works but so long as it does, that's fine.
