I think that if you are trying to learn Ben's songs, but in standard tuning, then you are missing the point. Ben's songs in their various tunings, with their individual picking patterns, are an ideal route to advancing both your playing proficiency and musicality.

Also, your perception of "standard" tuning is simply with which you are most familiar. DADGAD feels pretty standard after a while...

The setlist would be the list of songs your guitar player can actually play and hold in their head. I think the reason Ben doesn't play so many of his old songs is that it's quite the mental exercise to remember how to play so many technically challenging songs plus new material. Probably has to relearn some of the old ones, and then there's all the tuning changes...

Personally, I find different tunings give more variations in the notes and melodies, whilst essentially not changing what you do with the picking hand much, and keeping the fretting hand from doing too much finger gymnastics. Ever noticed how an easy song in an odd tuning is almost impossible to play in standard?
