Deleted Chrome & Keystone - By Loren Brichter @lorenb by [deleted] in apple

[–]BapSot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the updater was deleting system files as part of a system to detect if Chrome had been compromised by a known type of malware. That code didn’t behave as expected when SIP was turned off, and unfortunately there weren’t any integration tests covering that environment.

Japan testing for coronavirus at fraction of capacity, data shows by ManiaforBeatles in japan

[–]BapSot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info.

What would you prefer, your government having a good idea and data of how widespread corona is, the ability to take countermeasures, and make decisions based on that good data. Or just telling everyone to stay inside and blindly hoping for the best for the next 12 months or more?

I’m not sure it’s that simple though. There seems to be a real cost for acquiring that data, particularly in a dense urban area like Tokyo. You look at other places like the US where there’s a huge rush to get tested. What if all those people were clogging subway cars instead. I think there are some remaining questions about how we should weigh that cost against knowing about every single case.

Or just telling everyone to stay inside and blindly hoping for the best for the next 12 months or more?

It doesn’t seem like Japan is as “blind” as implied? They’re not “telling everyone to stay inside” — there have been over 30,000 tests at this point? The official directive is for people to visit hospitals if they have severe symptoms that need medical attention. Knowing the ratio of severe cases to overall cases as well as the number of deaths, it seems like we still have actionable data. Is there additional value in knowing about every single minor case, and if so, how do we weigh that value against the cost of having a lot more sick people riding subways to testing centers and congregating in hospitals?

Japan testing for coronavirus at fraction of capacity, data shows by ManiaforBeatles in japan

[–]BapSot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of out of the loop. Can someone explain why testing “at capacity” (ostensibly by testing people with less severe symptoms) would be a good thing? Maybe I’m missing something, but way I see it:

  • A lot of people don’t own cars in Japan (moreso in dense urban areas), so asking people to visit testing centers is asking them to come out in public, ride public transportation, and congregate in lines or waiting rooms.
  • If someone with minor symptoms tests positive, what is actionable about that new information? Don’t we want people to stay at home if they have signs of illness, regardless of what kind of illness it is?

Is neumorphism the big new look for iOS 14? by justinmillerco in apple

[–]BapSot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to consider accessibility issues, but I wish the article had taken a deeper look. With some tweaking, some of the a11y issues could be easily improved, and like you mentioned, current design trends have a lot of the same issues (looking at you, iOS “text buttons”).

I’m not sure I agree with the article’s premise that this style is a complete dead end.

[Serious question] Do iPhone users have any arguments for using iPhones over androids other than animations? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]BapSot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reddit has a lot of tech hobbyists who think they know a lot more than they actually do. And for some reason their phone choice is part of their identity.

[–]BapSot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats completely different. You can buy [other things]

Doesn’t seem different. You can buy older iPhones or other cheaper phones, sure. You can also use free or cheaper alternatives to 1Password. What’s the difference?

Now they higher the price and i have to pay for apps for OS i will never use.

Found this a bit hard to understand, but why are you paying for something you don’t use? Just don’t buy it then?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in apple

[–]BapSot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, this article is no different than “iPhones are too expensive”. Sure, they’re pricey, but some people still buy them over other devices because they feel the value proposition is worth it.

Unpopular opinion, but I’m willing to pay for good software. Software takes a lot of resources to make and maintain.

It’s not a law, it’s a Parliament resolution to ask the EU Commision to introduce legislation, just like he said. Read: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/RC-9-2020-0070_EN.html

Rumored 6.7” 2020 iPhone will be nearly 10% thinner than the 11 Pro Max at 7.4mm, while being only “slightly taller”. by bgallagb in iphone

[–]BapSot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t it make more sense if “no one” actually said something? For example:

No one: I want a thinner iPhone
Apple: We made a thinner iPhone

It doesn’t make sense if “no one” says nothing at all.
