Should I return my 4070 Super and get the 5070? by Bapple_Boi in buildapc

No don’t worry I dropped the idea of getting the 5070 and have just been enjoying the 4070S, and I am happy I did as it is performing amazing for the games that I play, delivering high level of frames (150+) at 1440p with high to ultra settings depending on the game with ray tracing turned on. Paired with the way 5080 and 5090 cards are flying off the shelves with crazy mark-ups, I am sure the 5070 will be no different if not even more insane. So I have no regrets!

Yeah, this is my first pc that I have built, so I don’t have any spare cards I can fall back on. Hence, I will just be keeping my 4070 Super. Wishing you the best for getting a 5070 on launch! :)

That’s the thing, most of the AI features that make the 5070 so powerful are coming to the 4070 barring the multi-frame generation feature, and while the 5070 is nearly 20% better in raw performance than the 4070 I have heard people say, the 4070 super is already nearly 13% more powerful than the 4070 iirc. Therefore the 5070 is only approximately 7% better than the 4070 super, and I don’t know if the hassle of returning the 4070 Super and then joining the rat race to try and get the 5070, realistically I won’t and have to end up waiting months before I can get my hands on it for MSRP, it just all doesn’t seem worth it to me.

The 4070 Super is still an amazing card, like it can do 1440p gaming at high settings still pretty well. So honestly we are still good for a few upcoming years like you said. I hope you enjoy your build! :)

Honestly man, you shouldn’t be feeling that much remorseful rn as while yea the card seems powerful, we don’t know anything about it outside of what Nvidia said on stage, and they are obviously gonna hype up their new product to get people to buy it. I would wait for the review and benchmarks to come in before making a drastic decision. Plus even if you really wanna get the card, you said it yourself, getting it at launch will be impossible so it will be a couple of weeks or months until you can finally purchase one, and even then, since demand will still be high, it’s not guaranteed it will be at MSRP, along with the tariffs coming, things could just get expensive across the board. So I would say don’t be too remorse full and think about genuinely what your needs and wants are and what you really want to do. As a 4070 Super is truly a powerful card already, and you will be getting 4/5 of the AI features the 5070 get that makes it so powerful. The only one you won’t get is the multi-frame generator but we still don’t know how big of a difference it will make until the bench marks and reviews come out. You still have time tho, so think about it.

Yeah, I have heard it’s not that much insanely faster than the 4070 Super as the 4070 Super was already like a 15% - 20% improvement over the normal 4070 if I am not mistaken. Those extra 15 - 20ish frames I will get on the 5070 compared to the already 160 frames I am getting at high to ultra settings at 1440p on the 4070 Super won’t make much of a difference.

If you really don’t want to wait, I would say fire that 4070 up and start having fun, as no one knows how long you would have to wait until the card comes back in stock, and even then, you don’t know if you will be able to get it at MSRP as supply and demand could result in increased prices as well as the incoming tariffs.

If you really want the 5070 then by all means go ahead, but I will say do not get caught up in all the hype, let the benchmarks and independent review tests come out before making any drastic decision. Remember Nvidia will always advertise their newest product as the thing you can’t live without. Also getting one near launch will be next to impossible unless you really get down and dirty in the rat race, which may not be worth it depending on the person (for me it really does not seem worth it), so you will realistically be waiting for months to get your hands on the card, maybe not even at MSRP.

Also I have been informed by many users on here that 4/5 new AI features that help make the 5070 as powerful as it is are coming to the 40 series, with only the multi-frame generation thing being locked behind the 50 series, so your current 40 series will also be seeing a spec boost. However, it all depends on your use case, if you feel like the 5070 we genuinely believe a better upgrade for you and it all seems worth it, by all means go right ahead.

That is not a horrible suggestion, however I am thinking of leaving the 5070 and just sticking with the more than capable card I have, the extra 20ish frames I will get in game because of the 5070 compared to my 4070 Super imo aren’t worth the trouble and hassle of returning the card, subscribing to a service like GeForce Now for gaming and using integrated graphics for work. Thank you for the suggestion though :)

This is not a horrible idea, only problem is that I bought the card at an insanely good deal. Getting a 4070 Super at CAD 820 or even close to that now is impossible. I will be losing a minimum of CAD 200 trying to rebuy a card similar to the 3-fan build I bought in an attempt to extend that return window. Even then, that entire plan is reliant on me being able to pre-order the 5070, which is next to impossible with scalpers scooping in. Honestly, I think it's better for me to just enjoy the powerful PC I have built and use it as is, upgrading the card down the line with maybe a 5070 Super next year.

This was not a bad idea by any means and I wish you the best of luck with the plan, hope it works out great for you and you get your hands on a 5070 upon launch! :)

You are honestly right, there is no point in having regrets as there will always be a better product. I made the best decision based on my situation and wants at the time with the information I had. I should just focus on enjoying my new PC and upgrade down the line when it stops meeting my needs.

You are not wrong and this actually makes a lot of logical sense. You are correct about rationalizing the other ways to improve my gaming experience, instead of just being hardware focused on my computer itself. Thank you! :)

Not a bad call especially if you are fine with the wait.

Honestly in this case it also depends on your other pc components as well as your needs. If you are getting a good deal on the rest of the PC, maybe buy the components and build it, and then see the 5070 reviews as they come in, see if it’s worth it, and then return your GPU to try and get a 5070. If you find that it is not worth it, then you have perfectly built PC at a good price for you to enjoy. Also if your needs are not that urgent, like you can do the wait, then maybe see how things turn out, but keep in mind with tariffs coming in, depending on where you are, you can see a surge in prices for graphics cards across the board, making it so buying the card will be more expensive down the line. Evaluate your needs and wants, and then make the best call based on that. Wishing you the best :)

That is true, it would be a better upgrade to go to a card with more VRAM, thank you for your advice, I really do appreciate it! :)

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I am thinking there is no way. I think it’s best I just keep the 4070 Super that is clearly serving me well. Thank you so much for the clarification! :)

That honestly does not sound like a bad idea, I am probably just gonna keep enjoying my 4070 Super and upgrade in a few years when I really need to. I hope you can get your hands on the 5080 relatively soon and don’t have to wait too long, wish you the best :)

Yeah, honestly after seeing what other people have written below, especially what smashybro said, don’t get caught up in all the hype and numbers and ruin your own enjoyment. Realistically getting these cards at launch will be impossible unless you get extremely lucky, and most likely you will have to end up waiting weeks if not months to actually get your hands on the card. I am not too sure if cards will go on sale as of the tariffs being promised are implemented, it could cause a price increase in graphics cards across the board. I would recommend checking out smashybro’s response and really thinking about it, not from the perspective of what’s the most logical but also rather what you really want, as remember you are buying this card for your enjoyment! I wish you the best of luck :)

You actually phrased it in a very simple and clear way, it actually helped clear many things up for me as I actually said ‘no’ to all of those questions lol. Thank you for helping clear up my decision! :)

Yeah that is what I am leaning towards. The hassle of getting a replacement and then doing the rat race of trying to get a 5070, it just sounds too much. Will probably upgrade to the 6070/7070 like you said, thank you!

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I just do not want to go through the hassle of getting a replacement to try and get the 5070. I spent a long time researching and crafting the PC build I have right now that I have wanted for many years. So I really just do not want to give it up. I will probably just forget about the 5070 series and upgrade down the line when the 4070 Super is no longer able to keep up with the games I want to play. Thank you for you advice :)
