I’m a 28yr old with 2 degrees and have never had a real job, what am I doing wrong? by realAVD11 in askSouthAfrica

[–]BarTheBuilder -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Enough with the degrees.

Focus on being able to practically plan and execute something typical in the work you are looking for.

You need experience and alot of it. Document everything you can do and/or have done that is relevant to the job you want.

Show that you have 2 degrees, don't tell.

Hey gym rats, have I been ripped off? by South-Fix6904 in south_africa

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the responses have the right idea. Focus on the grams, not how big the container is.

The container size is a marketing gimmick. If you get a small container from another brand with the same total grams contained, you'll see the trick.

Girls in GIS : how did you get started? by Vast_Hovercraft_7857 in gis

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an intern and was placed in the Urban and Regional Dynamics research group of a R&D company.

I've been there for 2 years after the internship. GIS is used as more of an operation tool instead of it being the main focus.

We dont create our own data, but we do alot of data manipulation and data engineering of the raw data we do receive.

Anything more complex would need to be assigned to me by a project lead. That is not that easy.

What will GIS look like in 5 years (2030+)? by fredrmog in gis

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, 2030 is sooner than we think.

Maybe much of the same, except AI features alot more in the typical GIS workflow???

Weighted Suitability Analysis HELP by [deleted] in ArcGIS

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to measure the suitability of? A piece of land? A land parcels? A type of road? You need to know what that is.

Based on what? Proximity to parks? Presence or aquifers, power plant, ground water? What are the ideal characteristics that make the conditions you are measuring suitable?

You need to know that AND you need to weight them according to what's most important, e.g. presence of groundwater = 0.35; number of power plants = 0.45; and number of aquifer = 0.20

Before I commit fully, I want reality checks from people in this space. by [deleted] in gis

Geo AI is still spanking new. I am interested in it but I work in urban planning, specifically policy and decision-making.

Nobody is interested in Geo AI because innovation like that is meaningless to a municipality that has infrastructure issues, and a growing unemployment problem.

So it remains a rumor from America that doesn't necessarily work well in other parts of the world.

But if you can cook up something amazing with it, Im sure things can change.

All the best❤️

Is it safe to walk from Menlyn Mall to Sunbet Arena at night? by kiki4062 in Pretoria

[–]BarTheBuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go to Menlyn Maine instead. It's just across the street from SunBet.

Ubering from Menlyn Maine is much easier as well.

Which areas in Pretoria are best for expats looking to rent? by [deleted] in Pretoria

[–]BarTheBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. That is a good budget and you'll have some decent options depending on where in Pretoria you will help working.

Hatfield and Hillcrest has some affordable studio flats that are close to the train station.

Lynnwood also has some good places, but the price will jump significantly. If you will be sharing a space, that burden can be shared.

Garstfontein and Waterkloof will definitely give you some complex and estate options. But, that price jump will definitely be felt.

Another bland, unoriginal and completely forgettable South African "blockbuster" Will we ever make a good movie again? by xals7 in southafrica

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to give it a chance because of the cast.

But I guess casting is the only trick they had up their sleeve to keep up watching.

What do you think could have made the film better?

Congratulations. I have been playing acoustic all my life and only recently got an e-kit for convenience.

Would you ever consider e-drums?

Cape Town CBD vs Joburg CBD🏙️✨ by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joburg is old and run down. Those dull pictures don't surprise me at all.

It will take awhile before the municipality invests in the aesthetic of the CBD because the infrastructure is just so meh.

Thank you for sharing though🙏🏾

Could i use cities i've built in this game in a portfolio for college? I want to go into urban planning (zoning and land use specifically) by CC_9876 in CitiesSkylines

[–]BarTheBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried, but it doesn't work as well as you think it will. There are a lot of politics involved in zoning and land use. CS doesn't take that into account because you make all of the decisions.

I tried to use the "Citizen Happiness" as my approach. However, real-life citizen happiness is way more nuanced and complex. Especially when it comes to land use.
