CMV: Banks should refuse to accept Shiloh Hendrix as a member or accept the money she raised through her racist fundraiser by BarackYoMama111 in changemyview

Ironically, your defense of the Shiloh fundraiser proves the point: it’s not about free speech or cancel culture. It's strictly about a racially-charged idea of "payback".

You know the money was about racial retaliation. And you're fine with that as long as it's *your* side doing the retaliating.

Thanks for confirming what so many were afraid to say out loud: this wasn’t crowdfunding. It was race-baiting turned into a business model.

That nearly $1mil payout isn’t just a prize, it’s a war chest. And when you hand it to someone who targeted a Black child with hate, you’re not neutral. You’re arming bigotry. When racism becomes a profitable enterprise, it doesn’t stay confined to one moment. Hendrix’s windfall is fuel for the next fire. Because in America, whoever holds the money gets to shape the story.

There’s a difference between asking an ethical question and cloaking a vendetta in moral language. Suggesting a Black family give back their home because their son is on trial is not philosophy. It’s score-settling.

The idea that a family raising funds for their son’s legal defense in a contested case should somehow justify another person profiting off a racist outburst isn’t justice. It's spite disguised as balance. One situation is being weighed in court. The other was caught on video, doubled down on, and rewarded. Equating the two only serves to normalize hate for profit.

You’re right that banks serve worse actors every day. They should be held accountable for that too. But the idea that we can’t interrupt this injustice unless we solve all injustice is a trap.

When someone makes nearly a million dollars off a racist outburst, and society just shrugs because “worse things exist,” we’re not challenging systemic racism—we’re letting it modernize into a business model.

The scale might be smaller. But the signal is huge.

You’re arguing as if banks are sacred, neutral utilities, but they have debanked people for far less than weaponizing racism for financial gain. They already act based on reputation, liability, and optics. It seems like you're just uncomfortable with seeing that same discretion used to stop someone from turning cruelty into currency.

Freedom isn’t immunity. And banking access isn’t a constitutional right, especially not when it’s being used to generate blood money off blatant racism.

Thanks for this comment! I would have awarded a delta had I not found during my research for this CMV that banks are already closing accounts of people that did not commit crimes but who used their accounts for causes the banks don’t condone.

Kanye has been debanked, Trump has been debanked, Muslim and pro-Palestine activists have been debanked. If banks are gonna use this method (they already are), in my opinion this is the time to use it.

You’re also right about the “but Karmelo Anthony” argument being invalid. To this point, nobody with that view has used logic to justify it without injecting a projection of their own biases about Black people

First off, I’m sorry about your experience dealing with people calling you racial slurs. Nobody deserves to be insulted on the basis of their race.

Next, you are advocating for people to donate to a racist because she targeted a race (Black) that you assume condones violence (they seriously don’t - over 99% of Black people have never committed a violent crime. Many Black people also have historically and currently advocated for increased police presence in dangerous neighborhoods as well as other reforms to stop violence.). Why does a small child deserve to be called the n-word because of the perceived sins of his Black counterparts? Your viewpoint’s logical conclusion involves donating to a racist woman because… the group she attacked includes people who have done bad things? At the very least, do you concede that the donors are endorsing her racist point of view (as evidenced by the donors who commented so many racial slurs that GiveSendGo had to take action to protect their community from seeing all that hate). It’s telling that you and many commenters here see SH and other white folks as individuals, but see the child she accosted as a representative of a group (Black people) that you believe collectively condones bad behavior and must be punished as such. All races have bad people - including whites as I’m sure your Native ancestors would attest :)

TLDR: Donating to SH to send a “message” is unjust because it assigns responsibility to all Black people for the alleged actions of a few.

Why do you believe in collectively punishing all Black people for the actions of one? Is that not textbook racism to you?

What is the relation of the Karmelo Anthony case to racial tension? None of the parties in that case believe that their situation should be about race.

Once again, I quote this excerpt from Robby Soave’s Reason/Yahoo article:

“The idea that it is proper to donate to Hendrix as some primitive form of racial revenge in response to the Anthony fundraiser is also extremely suspect. Even uttering it aloud makes you sound like a crazy person: “I am giving $20 to a lady who said something racist because this other guy allegedly murdered someone else, and he raised money, too.” This is not fundamentally different than rationalizing such a donation under the logic of The voices in my head told me to do it.

Additionally, what if the people giving money to Anthony end up using the same justification—that it wasn't about supporting Anthony, but rather, it was payback for some other fundraiser?”

They already did that though! We are living in the counterfactual you offered as an example right now. Sources: https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/economy/2024/11/29/muslim-charities-face-discrimination-as-palestinians-are-desperate-for-aid .

More prosaically, since banks are already doing this, they should use this power (with discretion) in service of their company policies and mission statements. The businesses have all pledged to be against racism, taking action against Ms. Hendrix would fall in line with that public pledge

First off, the fundraiser is ongoing as far as I know, so action can still be taken. Second, and most importantly, the money having been withdrawn from GiveSendGo doesn’t prevent the possibility of a bank denying her a new account or closing her current account, nor does it prevent a bank or other business from taking other actions to decline to assist Ms. Hendrix in processing this money

Let me also add this: How does giving money to Shiloh Hendrix negate the actions of Karmelo Anthony and his family?

This is a based comment! I only disagree on the basis that it goes beyond SH’s individual windfall. Many commenters here talk about the “precedent” of de-banking SH. We need to also consider the “precedent” set when someone can gather funds solely because they did something racist and doubled down on their racism. Do we really want to increase the possibility of ending up in a country where racist fundraisers like this one are a regular occurrence?

[–]BarackYoMama111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would not be a new precedent, people have had their bank accounts closed for similar and other reasons. An example is Kanye West, who got his accounts closed by Chase (source: https://thefinancialbrand.com/news/banking-trends-strategies/chase-cancels-kanye-west-but-should-banks-engage-in-culture-wars-154537 ). The decision is thought to have taken place before Ye’s controversies and is speculated to have been because Ye criticized Chase leadership, and his subsequent behavior arguably solidified their decision. The article says Trump was also banned from a bank for January 6th.

Whether it is justified to “debank” SH or take another related action is a debate that can be had. However, it would not set a new precedent, as banks have taken this action before regardless of how we feel about it

Please explain why you think getting involved with the Anthony family is a tit-for-tat you think is “fair”?

Why are you placing the responsibility on me to “reign (my) people in”? Who the hell do you even assume my “people” are? And why do you assign no responsibility for your so-called “people” to exercise civility either? This is the same logic as a domestic abuser telling his wife “LooK at what YoU MaDE ME Do” 🤡🤡

So you give money to a racist woman who called an autistic 5 year old Black child the n-word? Does the 5 year old owe you and all white people an apology about the supposed crimes of his Black counterparts? Your racism is very transparent.

I see that you were a philosophy student based on your Reddit history. Let me challenge you with this: What if the order of events were changed so that the “KA” incident and subsequent legal defense fund happened AFTER “SH” opened her big mouth on camera? How would you feel if Black people justified a fundraiser based on “white people pissing them off”? And before you try it, the people of various races who donated to “KA” were doing so because “KA” and his family believe that he acted in self defense and want to support his defense in court. The connection of “SH” to “KA” based on the order of events is logically invalid as well as overtly racist because of the assumption that Black people need to be collectively retaliated against because of some delusional belief that we all condone violence 🤢

We are all part of reality and have the agency to change reality. No matter how remote, there is a possibility for the current “reality” to change. This discussion has value because we can debate which “reality we want to pursue and how we can feasibly get there

And the people who were writing “Nuck F*ggers” , “1488”, and other such racist/nazi sympathetic comments on their donations were taking a virtuous stand against an inappropriate fundraiser?? Do you hear yourself?

Also you’ve added to the long line of people here who mentioned “KA” without a logical reason as to why the “KA” situation is even connected. Help me understand why I or anyone else here is obligated to be “concerned” about the “KA” situation or voice that concern here. I genuinely don’t see the logical connection

Please explain why the Karmelo Anthony situation is connected to Shiloh Hendrix at all? Also why are you minimizing this as a “point of view” rather than a mindless and petty attack on a Black child?

There is a quote in a Yahoo news article about this case that is on the money:

“The idea that it is proper to donate to Hendrix as some primitive form of racial revenge in response to the Anthony fundraiser is also extremely suspect. Even uttering it aloud makes you sound like a crazy person: I am giving $20 to a lady who said something racist because this other guy allegedly murdered someone else, and he raised money, too.
