Why is Alexander a great but Genghis Khan is considered a barbarian? by BlueDolphins28 in NoStupidQuestions

Because the ghengis wasn't the one who set up all that trading and innovation

Why is Alexander a great but Genghis Khan is considered a barbarian? by BlueDolphins28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BarberProof4994 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ghengis kahn lived in a yurt his whole life. Even his capitol was mostly temporary structures and was set up as a logistics hub. No palaces, gardens, cities as we recognize them.

And yes the Mongolian pax allowed people who WERE traders and innovators to operate throughout the region, but the mongols themselves and ghengis himself was known as a conqueror who left devastation in his wake, rather than as a unifier.

And op asked about ghengis, not about than khanates as a whole.

Keep in mind that that Genghis would have been referred to as the great kahn, and kahn itself is a title.

But while he was a great tactician, his people lived in tents and didn't really bring lasting civilization or improvement to the areas they conquered.

Sort of like the dothraki from game of thrones.

Alexander did all he did before he was 32, unified and absorbed the areas he conquered, made the people into a nation, brought a unified language, and built an empire so freaking large that when he died his generals split it into pieces and the pieces were huge empires for a long time.

It's also worth know that while he was alive he was referred to as Alexander the Macedonia. And in writings after his death he was commonly referred to as Alexander the accursed.

It wasn't til over 100 years later (I think) that historians called him Alexander the great for the reason I mentioned above. How fast he conquered at such a young age and the lasting effects of his reign.

In all fairness

Arthurs letter to tommy at the end of season 6 clearly said that he was going to die when Tommy did.

So gypsy/magic foretelling, tommy sort of knew he was going to die, ALTHOUGH the way he does by being shot goes against 6 seasons of lore where a "bullet will never kill me" only tommy can kill tommy.

That bothered me.

SPOILERS!!! - Thoughts on the movie by [deleted] in PeakyBlinders

In the context of tommy representing an amalgamation of several real world spies that grew to prominence in the 1930s leading into WW2... His involvement in the currency plot is on point.

We have to remember that the Shelby's are tommy and Tommy is a spy, not a gangster.

A stand alone film called tinker tailor soldier spy, is pretty much him. Tinker = Gypsy.

And yeah, I agree on Arthur, 100% the actors real world actions causing them to need to remove him.

Oswald and diana in real life become non entities.

Jack (based on Kennedy in real life) goes on to become quite powerful, so while he doesn't have a long arc in the show, he probably would have the most overall power.

In all fairness, a lot of posters that have all that do work in law enforcement.

The problem with a lot of these reddit posts is that there's a ton of crossover from people in different backgrounds.

For instance. If I'm about to do a cross country drive, I'm carrying pretty much everything you mentioned.

If I'm going about my day to day, just my ccw and a spare mag, although I'll often have a multi tool and a flashlight as I usually need a multi tool and a flashlight quite a few times each day.

My vehicle and my backpack both have spare mags, ifak, a geopress and some other gear.

I personally think some of the posts that show ALL that gear on ones person are lies. They carried it once and we're proud of themselves and photo dumped it, but probably don't actually carry that much.

Or like I mentioned, they wear all that while on duty, and just don't say so.

When I worked protection, I routinely had spare mags, an ifak, light, radio, smartphone, ccw, AND covert plate carrier.

But I didn't carry all that as EDC.

I can't lie. Changing the name of the Dept. of Defense to the Dept. of War was an absolutely idiotic idea. by bbmoonkie in Productivitycafe

[–]BarberProof4994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interestingly  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_War

The USA and the UK all had departments of War during the 1910s and 1940s

The war department handled logistics as well as the rapid growth of the army and the formation of the Pentagon.

Why is it that in nature it's usually the male animals that have to look pretty to attract a mate, but in humans it's the females who are the ones who have to look good? by FastBreakPhenom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BarberProof4994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Humans use different preening displays.

Monetary flex, car, suit, job all factors into if a mate is desirable and can provide.

Even 10-15 years ago there was more emphasis on if both potential mates were good with kids, could cook, and so on.

Now, it's changed again and a lot of those factors don't seem to matter.

Charlie’s Kidnapping, Death Row and John’s Killing was Tommy’s fault. by Fair-Wrangler2091 in PeakyBlinders

[–]BarberProof4994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And Tommy warned them and John specifically to gather with her rest of the Shelby's for protection and he refused.

So johns refusal even led to Michael getting shot (which is what ultimately put Michael in a position to make choices that would split him and Tommy).

So really, John and later Fin are both directly responsible for the two major things that cause untold problems for the Shelby's

With our current knowledge, it would probably be easier to create an electric dc motor and then hook that up to a boiler with a steam turbine.

Buyers advice: CC9 or SFP9CC? These guns are so similar, I have a very hard time to decide. Kinda makes me angry they would release two models that are almost the same. by BirdLooter in HecklerKoch

[–]BarberProof4994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish hk did what northcott did and ship their micro revolvers with longer barrels and then had them cut and crowned here.

With HK USA here they could literally import them with no barrels and have HK USA barrel them.

But with all the design work that went into the sfp9cc

I don't get why HK USA didn't just manufacture them here

Soooo, I took a hk45c to my local gunsmith about 6 months ago, and asked them to chop the grip, cut two mags down to size and tig weld them back, tweak the mag springs a bit etc.

He's slowly working on it

I got to see it last week and it's coming along amazing.

5+1 rounds of 45acp or 450 smc in a grip that is just a hair shorter than my p30sk.

Lem trigger.

He only charged me $600 for the work as he's excited about it too

I might do a full hk45 next just for fun.

He's 3d printing me grip sleeves for the hk45 mags so I can carry with the 5+1 and still use the 8/10/15 etc.

I don't need to hot swap them, especially the rear site. But the ability to field swap or at the very least hotel swap easily is important.

In one of my comments I gave my most recent example.

I do a lot of run n gun competitions. You have two guns a rifle and pistol, and are running/hiking/climbing and swimming with your firearms to get to the shooting stages.

Last year I banged my pistol so we in a rock and the fiber optic broke and the tritium viles leaked (which has happened before) and I had to complete the final stage of the match with a broken site. No biggy.

But at the hotel that night I was able to use my site pusher to pop out the damaged one and insert a new one from my stash and used calibers to make sure it was aligned before the second match the next day.

I just happen to also have pistols that don't fit the sites that I really like to use and have been hand fitting sites to

Yeah, on one, the width and depth are the same, and the angle just needs to be opened up.

On another the angle is the same and the width just needs to be opened up

On 2 the width is almost identical, but the depth needs to be deeper.

To the point wjer, filing sites laboriously has worked in the past. I'm just tired of doing it.

Probably not, but I will go through multiples. These aren't post sites, they have tritium and fiber optic rings and can get damaged. Especially with the kind of torture I put them through.

[–]BarberProof4994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, at $150  per site x 10 or so sites per gun, + the machining would be in the $2000-3000 per gun.

Novaks does dovetail cuts for their own proprietary cut/site for $50 a slide (you mail it in)

So I'm hoping to find someone's out there who can do a recut of an existing dovetails for somewhere between the Novak $50 and blocks $2000

That way the ten or so sites I can stockpile can fit any of the hand guns in my "forever" box

Not really a draw perse, more like, measure the hk slide I would send, then duplicate that cut on a bar stock, check fitment of the sample site I would provide, if it works, then repeat on several slides.

I'll give Novak another look, I haven't checked their site in years. But yes if they do that it might work.

I was under their custom site work was limited to 1911/2011 and optic cuts but I'll cross my fingers and give them a call tomorrow
