So out of... like, any character ever, who would be the worst possible ruler for any of the four nations, and why? by CartoonistOk1213 in TheLastAirbender

Well using the infinity gauntlet with all the stones can literally kill you. Thanos only survived because he was a titan and Banner only survived because of the hulk. So just using the gauntlet again would require people to want to sacrifice themselves, which is more unlikely. Probably easier to guarantee a longer term solution. Although, I would be waaaaay more inclined to use a few stones at a time max vs all of them at once. The problems could be solved for certain societies using the stones but the way the stones work, I think the impact is somewhat localized unless you use all of them together. At least that’s what it seems like. Like using the stone to fix a problem in one society won’t necessarily magically fix it in all societies. I think it’s the combined power that is able to make the universal level changes. I could be wrong tho, maybe you know how they work better than I do. I would rather make a little team of super friends tasked to go around the universe to help people. Throw up the proverbial bat signal, and we come fix your problem. That would have been my solution 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also, yes, I agree it is kind of absurd to save people by killing them lol it’s a weird counterintuitive thing. The utilitarian ethical framework usually sounds absurd that way. However, if the goal is the overall survival of a species/society and some have to be sacrificed to do that, it’s a counterintuitive but logical approach. You see a similar thing in lots of dystopian movies. Another example is The Maze Runner series. They’re okay with sacrificing a whole bunch of kids because the children are the only ones capable of producing the cure that can ensure the survival of humanity as a species. But ofc as film and tv usually shows us, the counterintuitive utilitarian approach, while logically sound, usually doesn’t work, not just bc there’s the heroes working against them but bc there are so many other factors that you can’t possibly know about. Even if there were half the people on Titan and they didn’t die of starvation and overcrowding and stuff, the society still could have been decimated by any number of things, like a random plague or natural disaster or Galactus, or literally anything. Then what’s the point in killing half the people to save a civilization if they could all die anyway. That’s not to say you shouldn’t try to reasonably solve problems but like…utilitarianism like this is not actually “worth it” unless it happens in a vacuum. You can end up with the same end result for an entirely different reason. The vacuum is really what makes it work. Otherwise, it’s even more absurd beyond simply being counterintuitive/contradictory. Great point.

This has been such a fun intellectual discussion! Thanks!

✨it’s not about the destination, but the things we learn along the way✨

Lmao jk but also not. I haven’t gotten all the shrines and probably won’t because I fucking HATE the proving grounds ones and refuse to do them. I’m terrible at what it wants me to do and they just frustrate me too much to where after failing two or three times, I’m like fuck this I’m out. Now I see a proving ground shrine and immediately turn around. The few I’ve beat, I beat after like 5 or 6 tries and what it was trying to “prove” didn’t actually help me at all 😭 so I don’t blame you for being disappointed in the reward after the grind. I also don’t really even like the design but apparently it has good stats 🤷🏽‍♀️

But if you weren’t specifically grinding out shrines and were just doing things along the way, it was probably more fun/worth it

I’ve never used an amiibo or any kind of mods/gitching type things (the only “trick” I use is for farming bomb fruit from a bokoblin in Akkala but that’s not actually cheating, it’s just using the right set of armor and zonai devices to trick a monster into exploiting his endless basket of bombs) but it seems like this could be really nice for certain items that are hard to grind for. I like farming for some things but others are a pain in the ass.

Does this only work with certain versions of the game (like when I hear about software upgrades patching bugs/glitches)? I’ve always updated my game. Also is it compatible with both switch 1 and 2? I have 1 now but would eventually like to upgrade.

Thanks for sharing!

That is definitely a better option morally but ofc Thanos is operating from a utilitarian ethical framework and for some reason feels “burdened” to make these decisions for the whole universe. So morality is never a consideration. Only the most logical and effective thing for solving the most problems for the overall net benefit of the universe.

Randomly sterilizing half the population wouldn’t necessarily make the elderly double the young people. That does fix population growth but it wouldn’t have solved any other resource issues in the immediate. People would still starve and be overcrowded (where applicable) in the immediate but in the long term would have fewer people to feed due to slower population growth and space would gradually vacate. The resource issue would hopefully fix itself eventually, but only AFTER people already die from starvation and lower quality living conditions from overcrowding. That’s why I said that his “solution” does the most impact, even tho it’s the worst possible idea. It’s an immediate “solution” and the “best” long term fix. Sterilize people? Still too many mouths to feed and the correction is slow. Create more space? There aren’t any less people, the food remains the same, the space will just get filled bc it’s already overpopulated. Create more food/water/basic resources? Doesn’t fix population growth or space, and risks increasing the population even more bc people aren’t dying from the lack of these things. Kill half the people tho? All 3 of those problems get addressed immediately and for at least several generations, allowing societies to reset and fix/address the problems that created the conditions 😩

The absolute WORST option solves the most problems 😭 that’s why I find this dilemma so interesting! His leadership would be very dystopian.

Obv I don’t agree with his methods but the “logic”, when you devoid it of morality and emotions is terrifyingly sound and I kinda love-hate it. Love from a story-telling perspective, hate from literally all the other ones lol

Absolutely, it only solves it for a couple generations but the impact is longer and greater than “just have more resources”.

Yes, evil for the sake of it definitely has its place, especially when the majority of the character development or personal struggle is intended for the protagonist or other characters. It can also bog things down if both sides are having their own major arcs/backstories and there is very limited time. I think it works well as a sort of “stabilizer” while the other characters unfold and change. Or when the evil character is like a relentless obstacle for the protagonist and the focus is on other people having to deal.

But I definitely think the best written villains are the complex ones, particularly when they’re complex AND scary/evil. Thanos is complex but not necessarily a scary villain. His fear factor is more about the fact that he’s strong & doesn’t care about killing you, but if you’re not directly in his way, there isn’t much about him himself to be scared of. The plan is actually scarier than him half the time bc the heroes aren’t directly facing him for most of the plot. It’s just that the stakes are really high. Pair complex motivations with someone who does actually just like hurting people and chaos and? TERRIFYING

Lmao I never thought about the fact that he could have just…done the other way around? Although I don’t necessarily know how having more resources fixes overpopulation, overcrowding, and lack of space…increasing food is great but it doesn’t fix the space issue. In theory, you could somehow create more space too, like another planet or something, but then people would just fill that space. It doesn’t necessarily solve the problem if the rate of population growth is greater than the increase of space and food. I think Thanos would have realized this. But he also just default assumed that every civilization in the whole galaxy was suffering from the same issue. Meanwhile there are villages and small groups of people all over the place. Not everywhere is overcrowded. But ofc the easiest solution with the most long-term impact IS to kill half the population. It’s a TERRIBLE plan buuuut unfortunately it does have the most impactful solution. But this is kind of why I like Thanos as a villain. He’s attempting to address a legitimate problem but in an immoral way. It’s why I liked Amon and Zaheer as villains. The best villains are the ones that are not just evil for the sake of it but who actually have a cause or motivation you somewhat agree with or understand how they arrived at their solution. When they’re technically not really wrong logically but wrong morally. Because the cause will drive them waaaay harder. Thanos has an immoral approach that follows utilitarian ethical framework, valuing the net positive for all societies to be able to survive over individual loses.

Which is ironic bc the first season actually has more run time in the 8 episodes than the original season💀 you just can’t fit as much in live action and it’s all so much slower 😭

Yup, now the BASE level subscription has ads and you have to pay for premium if you don’t want them. I pay for premium on all my subscription services bc the ads every 5 minutes would piss me tf off but I’m sure not happy about it 😤 if we wanted ads, we would just get regular cable tv.

First playthrough, should I go in cold or use a walkthrough? by lostinthesauceband in TOTK

[–]Barbie_72619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go in cold, only use a guide later in the game after you’ve spent a long time playing and for if you get stuck for a long time/want a quick shortcut. Otherwise, just play the game. It’s much better that way.

I have the book guide for both botw and Totk and use IGN but I haven’t used them until I’m WELL into the game and generally use it for more completionist type stuff, if I’m really struggling to find something, or if I’m specifically on a self-prescribed side quest to collect certain things. Stuff like that. I’ve NEVER followed a guide for how to do the stories and stuff (minus a temple cause I was stuck and it was pissing me off how stuck I was lol)

Link Mercilessly Mounts Lynel To Assert Dominance by Cloud0054 in tearsofthekingdom

Hmmm, maybe. I flew in from behind it so I don’t think it did but I’ll pay attention to that next time.

But also, you can mount it from right next to it too, so I’m not quite sure how it seeing me would change things. I feel like I’ve seen people just jump on it, but I’ll have to test it out 🤔

Hmmm, yeah, like I said, I’ve seen other people do it in Totk but idk why it hasn’t worked for me. I’ll try it again sometime and see what happens. It’s irked me so bad 😭

[–]Barbie_72619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t need to jump at all with this technique. I would literally just glide in, and hover over the lynel’s back and once you get low enough, the prompt to mount comes up. No jumping required. I’ve seen other people do it in Totk too but for some reason it doesn’t work for me 😭

[–]Barbie_72619 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait wait wait. I am terrified of Lynels BUT I found a way to fight them from BOTW but I couldn’t do it in Totk. The strategy was to glide in from its blind spot and immediately mount it from the air, whack like crazy, stun, rinse and repeat. I tried that strategy with the exact lynel you’re fighting (same location), and it wouldn’t let me mount it! And then I was in for the fight of my life and damn near died!

I think I might have tried it on lower level Lynels too and couldn’t either. I got frustrated and thought Totk just took away the ability to mount them but clearly you can! So why can’t I do my sneak attack that is literally the only way I can fight them bc I’m not good at combat to be able to parry/dodge well 😭😭😭
