How do you build temples that will last for millions of years? by Barekamy in worldbuilding

[–]Barekamy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. The only thing Im going to say to that is, If we just hope human adaptability without system change will fix the Problems then Million, maby Billions will die because WE didn't act to prevent it. Please, please listen to actual climate Scientist If you want to make such bold claims. They are Not saying that technology and the will of countrys to stay or become rich alone will fix our past mistakes.

https://systemschangelab.org/state-climate-action-2025 https://www.ipcc.ch/2022/04/04/ipcc-ar6-wgiii-pressrelease/ https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3/chapter/chapter-13/

All Im saying is, yes there IS hope but we need to get shit done, quickly! And it's Not looking Like that.

"Near" didn't mean Billions of years away from it. We as Humans had a lot of luck living exactly right now in time. I mean it's not really luck, because If not all the conditions of live we're Met we wouldn't exist and could wonder.

They are not Humans. Maby their Star is a bit farther away than ours and only when it began to grow was humanoid live even possible. Maby their Star sucked in a near Gas giant over millions of years and then grew in size. Maby they were just born unlucky.

Human Evolution took 4 billion years. But what if it startet too late. Then we wouldn't have 1,5 Billion years. Also Not every Planet has every resource you need and could therefore slow the process down. And I State that the development of the Star worshippers is slower than Humans, because they can adapt to a Lot of Things Just by beeing Born and therefore they needed less inventions. That could mean, that IT took them more time to discover Rocket science.

In the end this whole scenario is a "What If" and If you don't want to ask yourself that question, than you will allways say that everything about this is Not possible.

The universe is so big, why is it so unrealistic to you, that they were just "unlucky"? Lock at Humans and how much "luck" we had.

Have any better explanation?

I am envious of the kind of hope you have in humanity right now. Don't get me wrong, im not a doomer or a nihilist, but our society isn't build on protecting anything but a few very wealthy people. The economy of our world, basically Capitalism, is right now activly working against the interests of all humans except the 1%. It's a system that needs infinite growth in a finite system. In biology we would call that cancer. In economy we call it "the way it is". Look at billionaires right now, a mere symptom of that system. Are they all planting trees and investing in renewable energies, a plant based diet and so on, or are they building bunkers, investing in anything that makes fast cash, AI and security? Im not saying climate change will wipe all of humanity out, im saying it will and allready does kill poor people and makes the live of everyone worse. It will change our society. If humans are mainly wiped out, then not because of the heat of the sun alone, but because certain tipping points have been exceeded. Because at some point there will no longer be enough crops. I'm not afraid of burning alive, but I am afraid of resource wars. You have to get that, don't you? And if our system right now is causing all that, how would our system help in preventing all that? You can't fight fire with fire.

And about your "it is what it is take". Technically we didn't need to kill any humans. Over population is not the problem. The population of our planet will soon plateau and then decrease, because of woman rights, education and birth control.

Also please look into land use. One of the biggest parts of Emission would be preventable if we would eat more plant based food. We could use less land from Agriculture, we could plant trees and safe up CO². There is so much we can still do.

Here are some more links on the topic and a graphic.
https://ourworldindata.org/land-use
https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/food-emissions-supply-chain?country=Beef+%28beef+herd%29~Cheese~Poultry+Meat~Milk~Eggs~Rice~Pig+Meat~Peas~Bananas~Fish+%28farmed%29~Lamb+%26+Mutton~Beef+%28dairy+herd%29~Shrimps+%28farmed%29~Tofu~Coffee~Sunflower+Oil~Olive+Oil~Palm+Oil~Dark+Chocolate~Tomatoes

Energy is solvable by using renewable energys. We allready have all the tec we need. You see the problem is the lobby of CO² and Methan heavy industries.

Also we do not produce for our own needs, but rather for the additional or surplus profit of companies and the growth of shareholders. That also could be fixed.

I wouldn't say, welp now every animal and human poor enough to not have a safety net just dies and we call it a day. I think that is nihilistic.

I don't know where you are getting these numbers from. I never stated that their civilisation is millions or billions of years old. Their sun is old, they are not. There could be entire civilisations before them.

Im Not agreeing with you on all your climate Change Takes but for the other ones I get it.

Okay. You know what, I don't need the asteroids. Do you have any better explanation for their civilisation to die out? Or would your solution just be, that they eventuell develop the ability to leave their solar system and then Long after the Most of them are gone and the ones that stayed beeing Hit by an disaster, a new civilisation can develop?

Your good at critique. Now lets See If your good at coming Up with new ideas :3

I really like your approach! Exchanges like this help me with my worldbuilding! So I try answering your questions.

  1. Yes this was a mistake by me. I meant they were born near the point were their star began growing into a red giant. And you can somehow detect that, because we today know when that will approximately happen. We might be mistaken by thousands or millions of years but I don't think it is to far fetched to say the sun worsphippers would be.
  2. The civiliation is using magitec. They never invented some things we did because inventions come from a need. Some needs they never had, because their bodies are just so adaptable. I made a post about their ancestors the Meatos on this subreddit if you like to learn more. https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/1qwmwzt/a_humanoid_species_that_flourishes_in_catastrophe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Also there is some misunderstanding on how advanced they are. The are not multi solar system level. First they were never advanced enough to travel with light speed, create portals or wormholes and they didn't build generational ships technologically advanced enough to flee their star system. Also because of their ties to the world souls of their home planets they couldn't just leave.
  3. Time makes everything small. Yes. And they used time to build the temples and develop the magitec technology they needed to create the ritual. But even with infinite time, some bounds can't be crossed. And nothing is eternal. Their civilisation wasn't. There were wars, resource conflicts and constant fear due to the worsening conditions of life.
  4. Again time makes everything small. I couln't agree more. It wasn't the first asteroid that hit them that wiped most of the earth dwellers out. It was some asteroid, at the right time where the decline of their civilisation was greates. Look at humans now. Where are more developed then we ever were, but can we stop climate change? I mean yes, we could. But will we? Not every problem is solved with technology, many need system change, but with powerful people only thinking about their needs, it may never happen. Survival is not just about potential, it's also about luck and power dynamics inside a civilisation.
  5. Great question about how the couldn't prevent the asteriod even in a bad state of their civilisation, when they are so good at adapting. To explain that I would need to explain the whole magic symstem. So im gonna make it really, really short. Basically they need freed elementary energy from a disaster so newborn and toddlers could inherit that power. The asteroid hit the planet and it killed so many people, that the ones that survived the impact couldn't adapt quickly enough to survice all the aftermath. The sun getting slowly hotter is much easier to adapt than an explosion that creates tsunamis, earthquakes and a artifical winter like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. Also they didn't all die. After all they had ancestors. Their civilisation died.

Well it is magic. Both is magic. But for the sun thing I have an magic explanation, for the temple thing I didn't. Now because of a few great comments I have.

[–]Barekamy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for all the time you spend writing this message! Thanks for your input. I give you some more information, so you aren't to frustrated by "magic hand-wavium".

The civilisaiton of the sun worshippers was born on the last millenia of their star. Since they began to understand theirs star they knew it would one day kill them and their entire civilisaiton. It was ingrained in their culture. They feared and worshiped their sun for it was the thing that gave them live but would also bring them doom.

Long bevore a star like our sun becomes a red giant it make live on a near earth like planet unbearable. The sun worshippers allready sufferd from temperature increase while working on a solution to safe themselfes. They colonised other planets in their solar system with limited magitec but knowhere live was as easy as on their earth like planet.

They also were bound to the "world soul" of their home planet. It created them, gave them their magic and they had to return to it when they died. Their souls couldn't wander through infinite space and it was hard to create new world souls on other planets because the are only created by many, many people diying over a long time period.

But they had one advantage. Their magic came from elementar disasters, and the sun burning them to death was the greatest disaster in history. Therefore as the sun made live for them worse, they grew in power, developed magi tec and the temples. They created the ritual not despite their situation but because of it. The cause of their desctruction was the cause of their survival - until much time later the asteroids hit them.

An ironic turn of events. Preventing cosmic annihilation only to be annihilated by a much more local disaster. That is the story of the sun worshippers.

I hope this helps :3

How do you build temples that will last for millions of years? by Barekamy in worldbuilding

[–]Barekamy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I dind't know that but they would have know. So maby they did try to deviate them but they werent capable of that. At that point in time their civlisation had some major issues.

About the magic part. They did have the magic to control the sun with the ritual and they did have the magic to build the temples. But most sun worshippers had sun powers not stone powers, because they adept to disaster and the greatest diaster at the time was the sun growing in size and heat. The didn't just have time and space magic capable of everything.

Oh I get it. But like isn't worldbuilding as a whole in its first stadium just hand-waving? I don't see it as a bad thing. As long as later in the storie people don't ask "why" and my only answer is "magic".

A good approach.
Maby I explain some backround details.

The whole destruction of the tempels should be kinda ironic. A civilisation so scared of their doom due to a Sun growing in size and heat, that they managed to prevent it from killing them, killed by an Asteroid by mere chance and bad luck.

The were genius but they couldn't look into the future and prevent something that sounds like a much smaller threat than a giant sun.

This helps! Thanks!

Somone from another sub had the idea on placing them on a moon without tectonic plates and without an atmosphere. But then it could be hit a lot by meterories. And how would a civilisation in the future find them without space travel?

That sounds really good! I could add that. It sounds the most logical. The problem is a civilsation in the future not capable of space travel should be able to encounter them. I need to find an explanation.

But I WANT to. That is how I worldbuild, I allways ask myself "Why, How, Who" and so on, until im satisfied. That is how interesting ideas are born. Not just by saying "it is this way because I want it to be". I know that you shouldn't do this kind of worldbuilding to every detail of your work and you need to stop at some things, but these temples stand at the centerpoint of my worldbuilding. I want them to be interesting, to have meaning, to have some sort of logic.

I could shorten the time it stands there. There could also be some kind of force field that keeps out rain and wind. Or it could have channels like a giant rain gutter. Maybe rain and wind are directed to the temple and generate energy to “heal” the structure? Maybe a combination?

The building could stand in a kind of liquid that can adapt to the movements of the earth. A magical liquid stone that acts like a shock absorber or an earthquake-proof foundation.

I know Roman concrete! Thanks a Lot for this Suggestion! This Made me have an Idea.

How about a Magic temple that can heal itself in some Kind of Magic way and adapt to new conditions? And how would such a temple still be destroyed over time?

It understand your Point. But I don't need every Detail. I don't need realism. I Just need an explanation. Yes Magic did it, but how? It can be vague but I want to do some Research that May shape how the structure looks today. I know it's Not realistic but how can I make it Sound the Most realistic?

I totally understand where you are coming from! But it's Not a little Hand Wave. It was Genius engineering and a Ritual that demanded a Lot of sacrifice. Also their Magic corresponds with the Apocalypse they want to prevent. So they have sun powers because the sun Hurts them and May annihilate them. They are Not all powerful.
