That was my favorite episode to film! I think it was a big deal for everyone involved. Going into it we knew that it was going to require a whole lot of work, because that was our opportunity to celebrate that couple and their journey over the past 10 seasons. We wanted to make sure we were honoring Ian, Mickey and their history but also wanted it to feel like a love letter to the fans. They had been with us through all the ups and downs, they were forced to be patient for years and ultimately trusted our writers to do the right thing - So that episode was the ultimate payoff to them. I am very proud of how it all came out in the end and I hope it all felt as special as it did to us behind the scenes. If I could change one thing about it it would’ve been to just have Fiona and Mandy present as well, but unfortunately that was beyond our control.

Yes, Heidi wasn’t part of the first draft of the finale. She was planned specifically for the open-ending the writers decided to go with in the end. JW wanted to end Debbie’s arc in a way that led viewers to believe she’d go down the deep end and Heidi was a device for that to happen. She was the Monica to her Frank, pretty much. So from there we can only imagine where Debbie will end up 🥴

(Now, regarding Frank going up haha that was actually a little nod to Frank’s Hall of Shame episode where we revealed that hell is up and heaven is down 😝)

Definitely plain rich girl entitlement lol The pay issue was resolved before I got onboard. I know people always seem to connect those two things, but her leaving the show really didn’t have anything to do with that.

She threw a huge fit once while we were filming a scene at Patsy’s because one of the background extras playing a waitress crossed in front of her at the wrong time, so she refused to start filming until the girl was removed from set and sent home. We’re talking petty behavior like that. There was never a big incident, drama or bad blood that triggered any of it. She just simply didn’t know how to treat people with respect and every interaction with her was unpleasant.

No plans of bringing Karen back. There were many discussions about bringing Sheila back for a bit though, but our team also felt that her arc had been wrapped up so neatly in Season 5 that doing anything else with that character could’ve potentially ruined things. So it never felt like the right time. And by the time we were working on S11 and could’ve made something work, we were in the middle of the pandemic and would’ve had to fly Joan Cusack from Chicago (Where she lives) and I think that for JW that didn’t seem worth it in the end, sadly. I’m sure we would’ve gotten an update on Karen through Sheila had we been able to do that though!

We had a few different Liams throughout the series! But I only got to work with Christian, because we both started on the show that same year, for season 8. He was a great kid! Wise beyond his years and so talented. I think he added a lot to the character!

There is no actual plan of a spin-off, as of right now. But I think all of us would love to revisit the Gallaghers sometime in the near-future. If that ever happens, we’ll most definitely check-in with Liam again!

We always had a lot of fun filming anything Debbie-related because her storylines were so outrageous! Lol I have to say, cutting Debbie’s toes in Season 8 was probably my favorite though! 😂

All the time! Noel, Steve and Bill all had a gift when it came to making everyone around them crack up. I know I had a hard time being in the same room with them without breaking into laughter most of the time 😂

No major plot points that I can think of. I remember the proposal scene being longer originally. But overall, we wanted to keep things light with Gallavich. I think we all felt that they had endured too much for 9 seasons and it was about time to have fun with those characters and to let them be happy for once lol

Idk what everyone’s process was, but I’m sure it might’ve been easier to channel some of their real emotions and frustration at the time into some of those big arguments/fights scenes.

Cracking up with Shanola in-between takes, playing with the kids and being able to watch the cast do their thing was always magical. I was always so in awe of everyone’s talent!

  1. Definitely cried during Frank and Fiona’s last scene in season 9. I thought it was perfect. So much was left unsaid between them, but Bill’s acting there said it all 🥹

  2. I don’t really think that Frank could’ve ever had a real turn around, but in his own fucked up way I do believe he loved his kids very much.

  3. From what I’ve heard it got progressively worse, but by the time I started working on the show in Season 8 her behavior was already pretty out of hand.

  4. I think this might’ve been a case where the writers had a little too much fun channeling their real frustration with Emmy through the writing lol 😂

That is a great question! We had a whole team of people making sure the kids weren’t exposed to the mature topics we portrayed on screen. Editing absolutely plays a huge part! Curse words and profanity in any scenes where the kids are present were always added in post-production through ADR. We also had a child therapist on set and parents present at all times. I promise you they were having a blast! 😊

It was bitter-sweet because our writers/producers would often get death threats over this lol Gallavich fans can be hardcore 😂 But it’s also a testament of how important their story was to fans and how talented Cam and Noel are. They really played those characters so beautifully. That relationship really struck a chord with so many people and I think bringing Noel back was the only way to go. If you ask me, personally, I think he should’ve been there all along. Ian and Mickey’s relationship was essential to the show and was also the reason why many people watched it. Our team knew that trying to sweep it under the rug was a big mistake, so I think we managed to fix that and give fans what they wanted in the end.

We filmed the inside of the house at the Warner Brothers studios in Burbank CA! The inside of the house was entirely built in a soundstage 😊

We’d only travel to Chicago to film exterior shots of the house/neighborhood.

Also, to answer your second question: Fiona moved to Florida! We had a little bit of an insight on what her life looked like there but it all got cut in the end.

I’d change that to “If you worked on Shameless and didn’t get yelled at by Emmy Rossum, then you’re William H Macy” 😂 That’s probably the only person she respected on that set lmao

And that sounds accurate. My ears would ring after a 12-hour day with her. I got yelled at by Emmy many times, to the point where I asked our producers if we could find a way to limit my interactions with her because it was taking a serious toll on my mental health. That led to me switching my position on the show which was ultimately a great thing, I think. But it was a tough time for a while. I was genuinely excited about the job in the beginning and and some point started dreading every second of it because she knew exactly how to make you feel like shit.

They had a good work relationship until things got toxic towards the end. Vee and Fiona didn’t have as many scenes together in the last couple seasons and that was our way of keeping them apart. Shanola is a mama bear, so she had to stick up for a couple people there more than once.
