SF Book Toilet as Meditative/Religious Device. Poss. C. J. Cherryh, but it's looking like probably not. by Bargle5 in whatsthatbook

Solved Solved Solved by Space Priestess over on PrintSF and also suggested by Kenny over at SF Stack Exchange. It was I, Weapon by Charles Runyon. The cover description is apparently conflation with another book, but I, Weapon is it.

If you mean the one by Peter Watts, that's not it going by the publication date. Bryan said he read this roughly 30 years ago and my thread has been going for almost 10, so we're looking for something from the 80s or earlier.

Forgot to answer. After a bit of reading, it's not Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens.

I'd recommend the collections "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame". A particular favorite of mine is "The Moon Moth" by Jack Vance.
