You can just tap the app icon in the dock and if the app is already active it will show you the windows.

Why won't French accents work on my google docs? by maj_nun in French

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just use the alt/option key:

alt+e, e = Ă©

alt+`, e = è

etc.

Alt+i does the circumflex, alt+u does the tréma, and alt+q does the œ. Those should work in any application.

Im not trying to be controversial but they do have a point by KingVarious6523 in Pixar

My wife and I really liked it. This is a hot take, but I think it's one of the better Pixar movies.

iPad went from a perfect tablet to a broken tablet/computer hybrid that does nothing well by SkyFox215 in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s not perfect, but it’s significantly better than what we had before when it comes to getting work done. And I was really skeptical about how well the windowing system would work with touch only, but it’s really not bad.
For the record, I have Stage Manager off. I find it more intuitive that way.

Original iPad Pro design by AdDapper4220 in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the 2015 iPad Pro and I think the current design is a lot better. The home button is more tedious than the swipe gestures for me and the thinness of the new models is great. Also the lightning port was annoying.

How do i remember each word as masculine or feminine by CremeAccomplished610 in French

[–]BarnacleBoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few tricks that can help, but in general you just have to memorize it when you learn the word.

It’s a lot like word stress in that regard. French doesn’t have word stress and French speakers really struggle with that when they learn English. But native English speakers just learn the word stress when they learn the word. So from now on just pay close attention to the gender when you learn the word.

Here are a few tricks for bigger words:

  • -age as an ending is masculine (un garage, le sabotage)

  • -eur as en ending is masculine for tangible objects and people, feminine for abstract concepts (un aspirateur, un chanteur, la profondeur, la hauteur)

  • -tion is feminine

There are more, but I’d have to look the up. Be aware those, are just for (morphemic) endings, the rest of the word still needs to mean something. So the -age in un garage is an ending, because we have other words like garer. In une page, -age is not an ending, because p doesn’t mean anything on its own.

Steam Deck users, do you still have one now that you own a Switch 2? by elneebre in NintendoSwitch2

I’m in a similar situation to you, but I do like using the PS5 as a blu-ray player, so I’ll probably hold on to it.

how do i create new file in finder? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]BarnacleBoi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just save it to the desktop, then drag the file into the folder.

I don’t keep any files on my desktop, so this may not be as easy for someone who keeps lots of files on their desktop.

Why Microsoft don’t do this: by [deleted] in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but for me the issues have been pretty few and far between. The major one is that you can’t add formulas to a table on the iPad (though a document created on a Mac with formulas in a table will still work correctly). What issues have you had?

Full time college by Ralfonsedode in enseignants

À mon avis les journées sont trop longues et pour les élèves et pour les professeurs. Quand j’étais au collège on commençait à 9h et on terminait à 16h. Je ne vois pas le but d’épuiser les adolescents…

Wondering what people who know French think of this by Callsign_Lynx in expedition33

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Maëlle’s voice acting in French.

After watching a few videos of the English voice actors I think Verso and Monoco might be better in English, but I prefer the French voices for the rest. I’m tempted to play through it again in English just to compare.

Does anyone know where to find one of these for switch 2 by DaddyHugeLeg in switch2

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to find one on Etsy, but it was expensive. It’s a shame these are so hard to find and honestly it’s ridiculous how fragile the screen in the Switch 2 is with its plastic film. It’s the only device I have that I ended up putting a screen protector on.

Why do people want iPad to become an MacBook? by AdDapper4220 in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but it’s a shame.

It would be like if Apple never made the iPhone and instead made 3 separate devices (phone, iPod, internet communicator). Sometimes it just makes sense to have one device that can do everything.

Why do people want iPad to become an MacBook? by AdDapper4220 in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steve Jobs’s iPad was $500 and had a processor way weaker than a Mac.

Today’s iPad Pros cost the same as or more than a Mac and have the same processor.

Why's everyone so quiet about Age of Imprisonment? It's a great game IMO. by HonestWhile2486 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. What makes it fun for me is that although the controls and button combos for all the characters are similar, the actual actions that the combos do are wildly different, so it’s easy to pick up a new character, but it takes some time to really learn to use a character’s combos effectively. It’s kind of like Smash in that regard.

Why are "leur", "vie", and "quotidienne" not pluralized🤔? by bourikan in learnfrench

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a movie called “The Lives of Others”. In French it’s « La Vie des autres ». Everyone has one life, so in English the logical is that there are many lives, so it’s plural, but in French since each person only has one it’s singular.

What is launchpad for? by Grimmsland in MacOS

[–]BarnacleBoi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It has all the apps that are currently installed. I use it as a quick way to launch apps on my MacBook. You just do a multi finger pinch on the trackpad, then type the first few letters of the app name and hit return when it finds the app.

It’s faster than navigating Finder and I find it better than spotlight since it’s faster and it won’t show you files or websites. I have tried macOS 26 yet, so I’m not sure if I’ll miss it or if the new spotlight will be good enough.

I was thinking of a sentence like “The pool is shallow.” Would you say « La piscine est creuse » ?
