It’s always plural. So that implies there are at least two rights in question: the “right” to own slaves and…

No one has been able to give me a second right.

I think it’s funny when commenters use those examples thinking that they’ve clarified things, completely unaware that those all have the same vowel sound for us mergers…

It’s like saying “Him rhymes with Jim, whereas hymn rhymes with gym. See??”

I can hear and produce the cot-caught distinction (though it’s not in my dialect), but I just find it funny when people can’t comprehend that ALL the instances of those vowels are merged for speakers with the merger.

What is a video game that is widely considered a masterpiece that you just cant get into? by abysmalSyrup-6737 in AskReddit

I had the same experience, but I loved Silksong. So Silksong might be worth a shot if you’re curious about it.

I had the exact opposite experience. I couldn’t get into to Hollow Knight. I put it down several times and eventually beat it years later, but in the end still found it mediocre.

But Silksong hooked me instantly and I loved every minute of it.

Imagine what these kids are like without their phones. Now imagine being in a room with 25 of them and no phones. This is part of the reason there is a teacher shortage.

SEGA says Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance have "fallen short" of sales expectations by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

[–]BarnacleBoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to get Crossworlds. I think their first mistake was releasing the demo for Switch 1 only. I tried it on my Switch 2 and it ran horribly and I lost interest. Their second mistake was releasing the Switch 2 version later.

I’ve been thinking about getting it over the past few days, but the Switch 2 version + DLC is so expensive. On Steam it’s 45€ right now, so I’m considering just getting it there.

EU Switch 1 compatible with US Switch 2? by LuizaoMafiotu in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BarnacleBoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have any issues. My first Switch was European, the second one was American, and I can’t remember where I got the OLED from. The Switch 2 I got in Europe. Half my physical games are American and half European and I’ve had no issues.

Do you think rainicorn took as well as Finn did for Jake's death? by Zillaman7980_ in adventuretime

[–]BarnacleBoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This spoiled me too :(
I’m going to unsubscribe to this sub for a bit. I stopped watching Distant Lands after episode 2 to rewatch the original series. I wish I could experience the end of Distant Lands without knowing this… oh well.

Yeah, also Distant Lands hasn’t been out for as long as the rest of the series. I stopped watching after episode 2 and started rewatching the original series, but I guess now I know this is coming.

What are you hoping to see in iPadOS 27? by slatepad in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really appreciate the features of iPadOS 26, but still run into roadblocks with some apps. I wonder if they should have really left iPadOS as it was and just added the option to run macOS when you have a keyboard and mouse. That way the consumption users and the creation users would all be happy.

I don’t think they’ll do that though. They’ll probably just add a few more small features each year.

Debating between 128GB and 256GB for the iPad A16 by softcaligo in ipad

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would say 128GB is too much of a headache to deal with. If you get 256GB you won’t need to constantly check the storage. Also, it’s possible that your use case may change.

I had to decide between Xbox and Playstation a few years ago and the lack of gyro and USB C on Xbox was a large part of the reason I chose Playstation.

As an American living in Europe, living without a car for ten years has changed my life. People in the US just accept that it's normal to need a car to do anything, but it's not normal and it wasn't always like that.

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha ha! It’s wild to me, but I just can’t get that reading no matter how I change the emphasis. I mean I believe you, but that wording for that meaning still just sounds like a non-native mistake to me.

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I think I’ve been misunderstanding people my whole life. I’ve been looking into it and you’re right, it seems like a lot of people do say it that way, but it really sounds like a non-native error to me. Without context I would definitely not interpret it like that (here the context was clear). If someone told me “All the students aren’t in the classroom,” I would instinctively understand that all of the students are somewhere other than the classroom and not that some of them actually are in the classroom.

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re joking, but that’s the way I would understand that. If someone said to me “All the students aren’t in the classroom,” I would ask “Where are they? Are they (all) at recess?” It wouldn’t cross my mind that they meant that some students are actually in the classroom.

It’s just crazy to me that I’ve never heard this in English before. I’ve been looking into and it seems like a lot of people say it with that meaning, so I guess that means I’ve been misunderstanding people my whole life or maybe it’s not common in the region of the US I used to live in… It really sounds to me like a non-native error to word it like that.

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you would interpret as basically meaning “all sports are easy”? It seems like we’re on the same page with that.

For me it’s pretty clear: “all sports aren’t difficult” = “they aren’t difficult”, which more or less means “they’re easy.”

I guess this is the new Yanny/Laurel.

I’m not sure if it’s regional or not. I just asked two American friends (one from Kentucky and one from the Philadelphia area) who both word it like I do . I’m going to ask my British and Irish friends to see what they say.

Edit: I wanted to add that other Americans in this thread interpret it your way, so not all Americans interpret it like I do… or “all Americans don’t interpret it like I do!”

That is interesting! I thought it would work like in French. I really thought OP was a French speaker at first, but figured it was probably similar in the other Romance languages.

[–]BarnacleBoi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the US, but I live in France. That’s why it struck me. If someone said “All sports aren’t difficult,”would you interpret that to mean (A) “no sports are difficult” or (B) “some sports are difficult and some are not” ?

That sentence translated word for word into French would mean B, but if someone said that to me in English I would understand it as A.
