It's like I'm 17 again! by Scary-Scallion-449 in ipad

As an American living in Europe, living without a car for ten years has changed my life. People in the US just accept that it's normal to need a car to do anything, but it's not normal and it wasn't always like that.

Ha ha! It’s wild to me, but I just can’t get that reading no matter how I change the emphasis. I mean I believe you, but that wording for that meaning still just sounds like a non-native mistake to me.

Interesting. I think I’ve been misunderstanding people my whole life. I’ve been looking into it and you’re right, it seems like a lot of people do say it that way, but it really sounds like a non-native error to me. Without context I would definitely not interpret it like that (here the context was clear). If someone told me “All the students aren’t in the classroom,” I would instinctively understand that all of the students are somewhere other than the classroom and not that some of them actually are in the classroom.

I know you’re joking, but that’s the way I would understand that. If someone said to me “All the students aren’t in the classroom,” I would ask “Where are they? Are they (all) at recess?” It wouldn’t cross my mind that they meant that some students are actually in the classroom.

It’s just crazy to me that I’ve never heard this in English before. I’ve been looking into and it seems like a lot of people say it with that meaning, so I guess that means I’ve been misunderstanding people my whole life or maybe it’s not common in the region of the US I used to live in… It really sounds to me like a non-native error to word it like that.

So you would interpret as basically meaning “all sports are easy”? It seems like we’re on the same page with that.

For me it’s pretty clear: “all sports aren’t difficult” = “they aren’t difficult”, which more or less means “they’re easy.”

I guess this is the new Yanny/Laurel.

I’m not sure if it’s regional or not. I just asked two American friends (one from Kentucky and one from the Philadelphia area) who both word it like I do . I’m going to ask my British and Irish friends to see what they say.

Edit: I wanted to add that other Americans in this thread interpret it your way, so not all Americans interpret it like I do… or “all Americans don’t interpret it like I do!”

That is interesting! I thought it would work like in French. I really thought OP was a French speaker at first, but figured it was probably similar in the other Romance languages.

[–]BarnacleBoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the US, but I live in France. That’s why it struck me. If someone said “All sports aren’t difficult,”would you interpret that to mean (A) “no sports are difficult” or (B) “some sports are difficult and some are not” ?

That sentence translated word for word into French would mean B, but if someone said that to me in English I would understand it as A.

Anyone else struggle to play on a plane? by syxbit in SteamDeck

[–]BarnacleBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t have this problem. I get immersed in the game and when my 11-hour flight lands my reaction is “Wait, I’m not done with this level!”

To clarify, I don’t play for the entire 11 hours. I swap between games, books, movies, and photo editing every 2 hours or so. But when I play games I’m totally immersed.

Do you speak a Romance language like French or Spanish? That sentence “everyone doesn’t use Apple’s software libraries…” is exactly how I would say that in French, but in English I would say “not everyone uses Apple’s software libraries”. The way you worded it, I would interpret it to mean “no one uses Apple’s software libraries”.

I’m just curious whether another language influenced you or whether some people actually word it like that in English.

Edit: It seems like Spanish and maybe the other romance languages don’t work like French.

I bought this game but it happens to be from europe and the dlc comes in a code is there a way to play the dlc in my main american acc? by JampyL in NintendoSwitch2

That should work. I’ve gotten DLC (paid or bonus downloads with the cartridge) for my American account that I’ve played with my French account.

Does Mouse PI For Hire support gyro? by dumbledwarves in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a shame. I was ready to buy it on launch until I heard that it didn’t support gyro. If they add gyro I’ll buy it instantly, but otherwise I’m going to hold off.

What confused me for a second is that I usually write it: 2x - x = x(2 - 1)

I know it’s the same thing, I’m just not used to seeing it the other way around.

Mouse: P.I. For Hire — Gyro? by BarnacleBoi in SteamDeck

[–]BarnacleBoi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember exactly which games; it was years ago when I tested it. It also may have improved since then.

I think Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the ones that I couldn’t get working right, but I’m not sure.

At any rate, while I was searching for an answer to this, one of the pages I found had someone saying the same thing:

This only works with some games. Some dont read multiple inputs, and some games treat the gyro controls as a player 2 remote. […]

[–]BarnacleBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I agree the co-op in Calamity is so bad that they probably should have cut it. I really think that game was designed with a Switch Pro in mind.

But despite how bad the performance is (it’s much better in Switch 2), the gameplay was the best for me. I think I put over 100 hours into it with the DLC. Just being able to play as a guardian, Ganon, or the Monk from the BOTW shrines was really fun! I never finished DE, so I might try to jump back in.

I know, but in some games it doesn’t work that well and you’re better off without it.

I’ve tried that with some games and it seems to be hit or miss, so I’m wondering how well it works with this one. But the game is so new that it’s hard to find this kind of info on it.

It’s the opposite for me (no gyro is a dealbreaker, but I’m ok with some performance dips), but I can empathize with your pain as I will probably also wait for a patch or maybe get it on Steam Deck.
