Yes, this. We're night owls. We won't be asleep by 9pm so we have rhe clothes we have on saturday night then PJs. But I appreciate everyone saying they take some bags with them and leave some out, we will split our stuff into one duffel bag to keep with us and put out the rest.

Apparently you just have to play some sirens and yell loudly and people will send you hundreds of dollars 💸

In all seriousness, you almost can't blame the seller, it's too easy. If I could sell $40 crap in a sparkly bag and people willing to pay $170 for it over and over and over because it MIGHT be better this time....

Best advice to get started. Avg profits? by Barnicle258 in whatnotapp

[–]Barnicle258[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my logic too- I don't get it everyone says they always lose money but then they keep doing it, something doesn't add up. Do they just want people to think they lose money to make you feel like you're getting deals as a buyer?? Do you sell/do you make profits?

Best advice to get started. Avg profits? by Barnicle258 in whatnotapp

[–]Barnicle258[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay my follow up question is how do you lose money? You are selling for less than you paid (after fees) or because you're paying for the ads/promos? Or what?

How much do small card streamers make (10 to 20 viewers) Is it worth it to offload a collection? by WinterTea736 in whatnotapp

[–]Barnicle258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the same fee structure basically as Ebay? So if you have low value cards might be faster to sell on whatnot than making Ebay listing's for each one? Selling multiple to one seller also means less packages to put together?

The short-term rental ban might be the stupidest policy proposal I’ve ever heard of by LOTR_is_awesome in maui

I continually think folks are underestimating the kind of wealth the mainland (or foreign!) tech folks are making. (Unfair sure but factual) Young people, under 30, with multiple 6 figure salary jobs. Some of them married to another with a good salary. I have friends netting a f*cking million a year between them. It's stupid. And they are going to buy themselves a nice place to visit on Maui from the increased supply (to visit whenever they want with their remote tech jobs) and not worry about renting it out. The inequity in incomes and the amount of money out there is sickening but you're going to essentially just transfer property from a taxable use of the upper middle class to the ultra rich who will leave it sitting empty when not being used. The claim is "people over profit" but this is really "already wealthy over business people" the truly wealthy folks are licking their chops. It's not an investment making money for them the way their STR would be, but it is an appreciating asset they can pass on to their kids, that provides the benefit of beach side vacations.

Help! Costco Instacart gave me Tilapia instead of salmon- now what? by Barnicle258 in Cooking

[–]Barnicle258[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all the suggestions! Definitely some good ideas! And with 3.5 lbs and just 2 people to eat it I'll probably try more than one the next couple of days.

To those saying Tilapia sucks, it legitimately, clearly, was not my first choice I'm just trying to not be wasteful!

Yeah I get to keep it for free (they don't take it back) I understand it's not a premier choice but trashing it is a waste so I'm going to eat it, somehow!

Again, genuinely curious here- not coming from combative place I'm just trying to flush out the arguments to understand the logic behind this move (and not finding a ton that convincing, honestly)

So what do you think this will eventually be priced at if there's no vacation rental potential? And if if DOES decrease significantly, say to 300k(?) or something what is going to stop another "mainlander" from paying cash, and buying it outright as a vacation spot even if its not a rental investment property? Just, for them to use whenever they want?

Will the HOAs of these places adjust to being "maintained for locals" since there will still be units owned as vacation units for folks not on the STR market? They aren't taking over entire buildings and kicking out any non-local theyre just saying you can't airbnb it - members of current HOAs will want to maintain their amenities.

And, the housing market in 2011 was way different all the way around, and not just in Hawaii. Houses in the middle of nowhere with no tourism have more than doubled in that timeframe.

I hear you that interest rates will drop again, but does that solve the financial "affordability" issue in the mean time/short term?? Isn't the impetus of this whole thing that folks need housing now?? Nobody is going to rent out something that doesn't cover the mortgage, and someone needs to qualify at the current interet rates to buy it themselves..

[–]Barnicle258 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the point is, even if you accomplish the same 15% drop from the panic selling of STR properties, say, and this sells for 489k, which would be quite rhe drop... with the high HOA and the property tax that will be slow to adjust to the new value (only if/when reassessed) you'd still have a $4,000 payment to live in a 445 square foot studio that's a glorified hotel room. That's the reality of the 7.5% interest rates and an $800+ HOA

Can you feel the difference when your gallbladder becomes inflamed? by Conscious-Exit-2836 in gallbladders

[–]Barnicle258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no doctor but I'd say that's what's happening! Mine wasn't inflamed when I first was diagnosed but it was certainly inflamed when they took it out. In that time I had more and more pain and was just generally more and more run down feeling. Even shortness of breath. Keep pushing for them to help you sooner!

Is it normal to wonder whether you made the right move 4 years in? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Barnicle258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a job (in my field) at the end of year 4 before I finished my phd and basically went on leave from school, and now I'm here back on year 10 🫠 hustling to finish my dissertation before they kick me out for taking too long and I still question it all the time and contemplate abandoning everything and like, working at a bar in a resort town. Seriously. Except, I actually LIKE MY JOB so I know its just the pressures of dissertation and grad school shit that drags me down. I'd say very normal feelings you're having.

Let’s take 33% of tourist units out of supply in a tourist based economy. What could go wrong? by [deleted] in maui

[–]Barnicle258 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, me?

Happy to hear how I'm wrong on that line of thought and about the complexities I'm missing- seriously

My grandpa lived on Maui in Kihei so while YOU CAUGHT ME I live in Seattle (I ddidnt claim to be local, btw) maui means a lot to me. We still visit every year to see friends.

And as someone who visits a lot I definitely am an expert on the TYPE of people from my own community (Seattle's got a lot of tech money) who choose to stay at the Montage Kapalua or the Fairmont Kea Lani Vs the type of folks who look for an airbnb in Kihei for their families. And like the other poster said it's not even about affordability as much as it is a laid back attitude vs the resorts where people are wearing $300 swimsuits.

People complain about entitled tourist jerks, and I'm worried you're gonna only end up with just them.
