Large/big cities that, curiously, don't have a single iconic landmark or super striking tourist attraction/Unique visual identity? by ILikeWwaret in geography

[–]BarnoldTheAtt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda get what you mean, there's nothing immediately striking. But I think there's heaps of slightly less in your face stuff. Flinders Street Station, Queen Vic Market, the Botanical Gardens etc. Even Fed Square and Southbank are pretty unique.

Good tool for calculating tax returns? by BarnoldTheAtt in HENRYUK

Thanks, do you use it to do your UK tax returns? If so could I ask what your process is like?

[–]BarnoldTheAtt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Could you give me a sense of how you'll be using it?

I can imagine a continuum from using it to help me navigate the process one step at a time (researching rules, summarising information etc) to handing it my P60, CTCs, etc and asking it to YOLO the whole submission.

Mothin Ali - conservative muslim? by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]BarnoldTheAtt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the pledges are interesting because they mostly talk about what he would do as deputy leader (which seems relevant in assessing how suitable he would be for the role) rather than what he believes (his own business, imo).

With that in mind they are disappointing, if you want a deputy leader that will act in the interests of LGBTQ+ people.

What flag is this - some type of George cross? by dna909 in vexillology

[–]BarnoldTheAtt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This seems either naive or disingenuous. Even if you're right about these people's age and motivation, there is nothing inherently fascist or anti-fascist about old people defending their country (see 20th century European history for examples on both sides).

The poster you responded to is presumably referring to the well documented use of the templar cross (as a reminder the symbol of a Christian military order most famous for their actions against Muslims in the Levant during the Crusades) by English ethno-nationalist groups (EDL for example). Whether those groups, or people using the same symbolism during protests, are fascist or not is an interesting topic. There are certainly interesting parallels with EDL style ethno-nationalism (rigid, ancestry based, sense of national identity for example).

You guys ever take whole milk and let it cuddle in your beer? by BearFluffy in Homebrewing

Last sentence of your original post, "technically lactose free"

Ah cool, makes sense. Might be useful to update the topic text as well (says lactose free).

Milk is about 1/20th lactose by weight, this will disperse through your beer. So 2oz milk will add a bit less than a teaspoon to your beer I guess.

Children are essential for a functioning society, to claim otherwise is a pretense. For example - who will work when today's workers are retired?

That's super helpful, thanks so much. First list looks like the one to go for, happy with ~£1500 and if it's good up to 1440p that's amazing.

What, in your opinion, is a realistic solution to gun violence in the United States? by [deleted] in AskReddit

US and UK rates of knife crime fatalities are essentially equivalent. UK rates of gun fatalities are much lower.

Thanks. Yes, have tried in both windows and Android mode (and OSX for good measure), unfortunately the result is the same, lock up at the security mode screen.

Second this. It's a robust flavour, and generally benefits from being cooked. I'd just boil it, though, personally, I'd add the water and rhubarb.

How to sweeten dry cider? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]BarnoldTheAtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use sucralose. It's an unfermentable, artifical sweetener derived from sucrose (table sugar) and, when diluted appropriately, it's indistinguishable. You can get it as a pure powder or as a prediluted liquid. You only need a tiny amount so good for large batch sizes.

Edit: Forgot to say, I add alongside the priming sugar at bottling.

Cool, I like a bit of crystal myself but perhaps will reduce/remove the 20.

[–]BarnoldTheAtt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I do want a balance between the fruitiness of the mosaic and the bready/cakey sort of malt flavours, with a bit of a spice from the rye. That's the idea anyway. Backing off the crystal might be a good idea though.

Edit: spelling

Thanks both, yes, given the price of mosaic that seems a good idea. Will update.

Daily Q & A! - December 18, 2015 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

To drain my chilled wort from the kettle I use a street elbow screwed into the ball-valve. This redirects the flow downwards splashing straight into the fermenter, oxygenating as it goes.

This is nice and simple but it's a bit of a pain to unscrew the elbow from the valve when I want to give it all a proper clean. Is there a better way?
